      Why did the Catholic Church remove the original 2nd commandment concerning graven images and then split the 10th commandment into 2 so that the total is still ten? God's Law is not to be tampered with. The penalty for doing this is condemnation.

      @@anthonyciardi1 the Catholic Church, along with Lutherans, use the numbering scheme out forth by St. Augustine. They did not remove any commandments, because the commandments aren’t actually numbered in the Bible to begin with.

    I look forward to every Word On Fire exposition from Father Barron. I don't know of anyone who is saying more of what needs to be said to this culture, this generation, than Father Barron in his unique ministry -- not because he affirms me in what I'm doing with my life. Quite the opposite. His prophetic ministry calls me out, exposes my sins. It doesn't feel good, necessarily. But he keeps me in touch with reality.

    Particularly enjoyed this one. Sadly it seems many of the fundamentalist religions tend to be more versed on the Ten Commandments but in a stylized manner that is used to prop up their regimes. I do have a question, my wife is caught in the cycle of one of these sects and I am at a loss to find an effective way to “remove the scales from her eyes”. As priest who is dedicated to evangelism I would love ask if you have seen people in such a condition effectively reached and if so how?

    Exodus 20:1 And God spake all these words, saying,
    2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
    3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
    4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
    6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
    7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
    8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
    9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
    10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
    11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lordblessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
    12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
    13 Thou shalt not kill.
    14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
    15 Thou shalt not steal.
    16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
    17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
    18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
    19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
    20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
    21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
    22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
    23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

    Dear Father Barron, a friend of mine has left the Catholic Church because of the third commandment. I’m sorry for him as I don’t believe God will punish us because we love God on Sunday Monday Tuesday etc
    I love God everyday and try to go to Mass every week, whether Saturday or Sunday or Monday, because life sometimes doesn’t allow it possible to go every Sunday. I don’t believe God will not love us as much because we take the kids to school on Saturday or cooking meals. I find it not compatible with God’s love. Why do non Catholic churches believe this ? We love God as much as they do but they continue to despise the catholic church. Isn’t this what Jesus condemned ? Please pray for these souls Amen 🙏

    This is insightful. Though I did want Aslan to come bounding in. In other words, if Jesus doesn't come in and save us from our inevitable failure to keep the core of all of these commandments, then this is just a Sunday school lesson.
    We can't even keep the first commandment for a day, an hour. Let alone love our neighbour as ourself. The antidote to sin is not "try harder" to keep these commands. You know that doesn't work. It is only Jesus' death on the cross which secured our forgiveness from being covetous or idolatrous or dishonouring to our family etc. Repentance and the expulsion of the desire to do these sins by focusing on Christ's love and sacrifice is the only way to approach the law of God.
    Galatians 3:23-24 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

  • @virginiaarellanocardenas2795

    When I asked for the person who used my phone to buy things, I forgot completely that I did. I received two receipts that I did not get to open until I use that particular iPhone again. I was asked for comment for the two things I bought and I said that I didn't do that and I asked who did that. And by doing it without reflecting on who did it; I just sent it back with a question.All I asked was for the person who did that. A little while after I sent back those faces that came to me, I sent back the unhappy face and I asked the same question. Well, it turned out that indeed I bought two things for 150 each on separate occasions; however, now I remembered that those items were sent to me at the same time. I sent one to my first born daughter and I kept one for me. Now, now, the person that I bought those items from emailed me upset and asked me why did I sent those comments that she never used my information without my consent. And I just fall short to breath. I put her good standing name as a seller in jeopardy. I apologized and I begged for her pardon. But, what she wanted me to do is to find these emails and fix them. Why am I writing this? I did offend this person that I really love without remembering that we made three transactions because I bought from her the first item in person and the other two items over the phone. However, this iPhone that I used to communicate with her and to buy those items I gave it to Felix, the father of my children and I forgot all about it until yesterday. I just commit sin after sin without stopping first to realize that the Ten Commandments are broken every day by so many of us that it is sad that we don't pause for a minute before we judge anybody because before we know it, we the ones who are at fault. So, my point is that it is exceptionally important that we be reminded of those live given laws that our God had given to us. If we don't live by the law we die by it, because the law is so easy to break and hard to amend. Therefore, our Lord Jesus Christ had to come to Earth sent by his Father to teach us the way because he is the Way, to teach us to love because he is Love, to teach us patience because he is Patient, to teach us to forgive because he is God among us, one Father Son Holy Spirit. Amen.

    Actually the 5th Commandment translates from English to Hebrew (both have words for kill and murder today) as, “You shall not murder.”(ESV Exodus 20:13) not you shall not kill it’s only found in the King James Version with kill because kill was defined the same as murder in 1610 English.

    There are errors in the enunciation of the commandments. Where is the commandment 'Thou shalt not make images to worship'? What's more, the true order of the commandments has been changed in today's scriptures, for the Sabbath used to be the tenth and last commandment, the fulfillment of all, the key to salvation.

    B HOW DID THE LAW COVENANT BECOME "OBSOLETE"?
    However, the Law covenant became in a sense "obsolete" when God announced by means of the prophet Jeremiah that there would be a new covenant. (Jer. 31:31-34; Heb. 8:13) In 33 C.E. the Law covenant was canceled on the basis of Christ's death on the torture stake (Col. 2:14), the new covenant replacing it.---Heb. 7:12; 9:15; Ac. 2:1-4.

      Check it out it was Martin Luther who changed the Bible when he started the reformation as he didn't believe some books where necessary. I was reading the book of Esther in my Protestant bibke that my dad gave me... And realised half the book isn't there... It's heartbreaking. I wanted to read Esther's prayer, it wasnt there😮this is in the New International Version... The Catholic Church gave the world our first Bible, they have never changed it.

    I love what you said about all of the Ten Commandments, and although you mentioned that you shouldn't worship statues and things the like, "thou shall not make unto thee any graven image" is actually the 2nd commandment solely. And the 9th and 10th for coveting is actually only one, not two commandments. I mean no disrespect, but do not understand why your listed Ten commandments is different than in the Bible.

    *THE IMMUTABLE LAW OF GOD*
    *I* I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
    Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
    *II* *Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth*
    Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
    And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
    *III* Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
    *IV* Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
    Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
    But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
    For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
    *V* Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
    *VI* Thou shalt not kill.
    *VII* Thou shalt not commit adultery.
    *VIII* Thou shalt not steal.
    *IX* Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
    *X* Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

      @stevenchavez5979 Před 6 lety +3

      Leigh Wiggin it has not been dropped. Bishop Barron showed the commandment with out the entire text. The graven images and idols is part of the first commandment. Read the entire text and research pre protestant meanings. Protestants changed the them in the 1500's.

    • @leighwiggin4139
      @leighwiggin4139 Před 6 lety

      The Torah contains the commandments and this pre-dates the Catholic church and actually, the Protestant/Orthodox reading of the commandments pre-dates the Catholic reading. St Augustine chose the Catholic version(400AD), Origen chose the Orthodox reading(200AD). So you might want to research pre-Catholic meanings.
      The Protestants returned to an earlier version, they didn't re-order them.

    • @stevenchavez5979
      @stevenchavez5979 Před 6 lety

      Sure but there are more thou shall nots than 10. And why would God tell them later in Exodus to make images? I suppose it depends on ones particular theology. Also idol or graven image of something that one falsely perceives as a god is wrong and a sin.

    • @leighwiggin4139
      @leighwiggin4139 Před 6 lety

      Steven Chavez God commands not to make graven images for yourself. With the Ark, God is commanding it be built for him. So they're not connected. I just thought the Bishop glossed over the commandment.

      The Catholic Church keeps the The Lord’s day because it is the most important day of all if Jesus didn’t rise on Sunday then we would all still be in our sins and our faith would be vain as Paul says that’s why the Catholic Church keep Sunday because there’s no day that’s more important and the Sabbath was only for Israel according to Exodus 31:16-18 and it’s not for new testament Israel either according to Colossians 2:16-17 I hope you understand..
      Saint Thomas Aquinas talks about the sabbath and why it’s a abolished you should really read his work and I hope you understand why you should keep the Lord‘s day and why the Sabbath is no longer meant to be kept.
      God bless

    I have trouble with the explanation of the Second Commandment. The word in Hebrew is 'carry', not take. That changes the meaning to something that makes sense. You cannot act in the name of God because you do not know what God wants. Note that such an interpretation puts the Popes who carried out crusades and murdered other Christians, Jews, and Muslims on the bad side of the ledger just as it does Imams who talk about killing innocents in the name of God or Calvinists who burned witches in the name of God. Dennis Prager does a better job of explaining the Commandments. I suggest that Bishop Barron take a look.
