- Szia! I have exciting news - I have decided to start learning Hungarian! A language that, 5 days ago, I didn't know anything about. So much so that I thought Magyar was pronounced "MAY-GAR" (didn't even try to read it correctly in my life - shame on me!).
Anyway, I am super excited to share with you guys how I'm going about learning this difficult language. It's one of the first languages that I have a set start date for (20 Nov 2017) - which means I've been learning it for 5 days today... and I'd like to track my progress as closely as possible.

@@tangofoxtrottango1001 Yeah, if I learn Hungarian I can get their passport because the place where I live used to be Hungarian so I have a legal right to ask for a passport but I need to reach b2 lvl of language knowledge so now I have to learn it because I need to get out of here and with my home passport I can't do much because we are not in EU and I need visa to travel.

I’m Hungarian and i actually never realized how hard it is to learn this language. There are things we can’t explain why they’re said like this,you just have to learn it the way they are..
It’s not as hard as ppl think, it’s a category 3 language like Irish and Scottish Gaelic - I’m learning Hungarian, and the words are very easy to learn / remember, and the pronunciation is very easy as well, and the only thing that’s a bit harder is the spelling, because it has many letters with accents and certain double or triple letters that may take a bit longer to get used to and to memorize the exact spelling of each word, but other than that it’s quite easy! However, the words mis / mist and numbers cannot be in a yt name or name, and must be changed! The big terms / names Lindie and Tes also cannot be in names etc, and all unsuitable names must be changed!
I am advanced level in Dutch (over 8.000 base words) and intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish and Portuguese and writer level in English (60.000 to 100.000+ words) and native speaker level in Spanish (over 10.000 base words to 15.000+ words) and beginner level in most other languages that I am learning, and I am learning A LOT of languages, including Slovenian and Icelandic / Danish / Faroese / Luxembourgish / Old Norse / Limburgish / Gothic / Norn / Old English and the 3 Frisian languages and Afrikaans and literally all other Germanic languages and dialects and Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Manx and the other 2 Celtic languages, and the Latin languages, namely Portuguese / French / Occitan / Galician / Catalan / Gallo / Aranese / Guernsey / Latin / Esperanto etc and the language spoken in Wallonia / Belgium and Italian & the other Italian-based languages referred to as dialects, and all the other Dutch-based / German-based / French-based etc languages, which is extremely overwhelming - however, I noticed a few similarities between Hungarian and Slovenian pronunciation, for example, the C is pronounced TS or like the ZZ in pizza in both, and both use a Z-like letter for the J sound that’s in the French word je, so Slovenian uses Ž and Hungarian uses ZS which is considered one letter, and I also noticed a few similarities between the pronunciation of certain Hungarian letters and the pronunciation of certain German / Icelandic / French / Norwegian / Swedish etc letters, so when one knows or is learning other languages with similarities, it doesn’t seem difficult at all, in fact, Hungarian seems very easy, to be honest, especially the words themselves and their pronunciation and the sentence structures, which are very easy, and it has an easy grammar, and I think it only has three tenses, but I’m not sure...
"When people say nem, I think YESS I UNDERSTAND A WORD!". Hahahha I know that feeling. I have the same thing in Japanese 😂😂😂

I'm so glad you're learning Hungarian! I started it about a year ago and I absolutely love it. Sztaki Szótár is a really good online dictionary specifically for Hungarian, and it has a lot of languages to translate to/from. Verbs are tricky for me too, but it's helpful to learn them in the 3rd person present singular form (he/she/it) instead of the infinitive, because that's the most basic form and it's how you'll find the verb in the dictionary. And if you haven't looked at vowel harmony yet, you should check it out! It's much easier than it sounds and will help with conjugation and suffixes.

You said that the Hungarian words are very long.
But they aren't. The most etymologically Hungarian words are made of one single syllabe, but they become long when we put the suffixes and prefixes on them, because Hungarian is an agglutinate, "glueing" language, which "glues" all the suffixes and prefixes (person, time, possessive, plural, etc.) to the word, which in English are separate from it. For example: megházasodnátok. That means: you (in plural) wish to get married. So one word in Hungarian, 5 words in English. But the basic word is "ház" (house). So the different suffixes and prefixes from this word are: meg+ház+as+od+ná+tok. "meg-" is the verbal prefix which means to effectively do something, "ház" substantive meaning house, "as" is a suffix which put to "ház", makes the word "házas", which means married (to have a house of your own, away from your parents, in the old times people separated from their parents when they got marries), "-od" verbal suffix, "-ná" suffix to express the wishing of something, "-tok" verbal suffix which exprimes the plural of the 2. person.
-na, -ne, -ná, -né are "Conditional II" in English :)

There are extra long words in Hungarian, but these are made up of suffixes:

You can learn hungarian 2 ways one is to born in hungary the other is that you feel a constant need to understand: Te tetted e e tettetett tettet te tettetett tettek tettese.
