    A great video Charlie. I have had 1 flute for 32 years, over this last month I have bought 5 and over the next week or 2 I will begin making my first one. I really appreciate your dedication and your passion for making these beautiful flutes. Thank you for explaining things, how you and your wife goes about making them and why you do things a certain way. Much appreciation!! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. To the both if you, from me. The end if this clip was very sweet too. Thank you!
    Much peace and many blessing to you both.

    Thank you so much for this. I was wondering what is the next step, now that I've got the scale up and down pretty good. I can't have a wooden flute, or anything glass and shiny, because I have dogs and cats that think they're chew toys or something to play with. I made 2 PVC flutes instead, so I don't have to be afraid of hurting them by taking them outside in the snow or rain, I can play while I'm out with my horses, or just hiking, no worries about dropping them, or wetting out by playing too long in Arizona monsoon weather or high country snow storms. That really was a special moment at the end, I don't know their names, but I have heard of The Hu. Do you think they'll incorporate your flutes and whistles into their videos and music now? It was pretty impressive how easily they all picked up playing those.

    • @Fretfeeler

      @@BlueBearFlutes I have heard the opposite, that some tribes (especially Lakota) may have based their designs on Recorder, and that Cherokee adopted Recorders brought by Europeans. But in reality, nobody knows. They could have developed independently, such as the Russian svirel and Irish tinwhistle. They're all certainly similar though in the fact that they're basically a whistle you tune with different fingerings. I just consider them all the descendants of bone and reed flutes that cavemen played. 👽

      @@BlueBearFlutes I'm actually familiar with all of them, I think. If anything, they may all be based on Flutes from Asia, Natives bringing them over the land bridge, and being imported to Europe in the other direction!

    • @BlueBearFlutes
      @BlueBearFlutes  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @Fretfeeler My friend, we have to part ways when it comes to the whole land bridge conversation. At best, it is an oversimplification to an incredibly complicated situation. It is very speculative and assumes that a "theory" is the "truth". If we took every scientific theory as true, so much else in the world would be turned upside down. Luckily unlike those who could easily doubt themselves upon such a debate, I am quite devout in my beliefs. 😉 thank you so much for your comment and for this statement as I always enjoy pointing out this one native's side of the story.

    This is so cool, Charlie! I don't know if yuou remember me buying 4 kit flutes (after my initial one that I successfully made sing) to turn into flutes to gift to people we met on our 4 month TransMongolia and Russia over to UK and parts of Europe, etc trip.... Well, one of the absolute higlights for us was our trip to Mongolia (where 2 of my 4 'gift' flutes now live). Whilst in Mongolia, part of our 'private' trip also encompassed the usual mre generic 'guided tour', and hubby and I, with our beautiful Mongolian guide, Ganna, and our delightful driver, Baatar, ended up at a pub/restaurant in Ulaanbaatar. There was an amazing band of musos playing that night, and I was so enchanted by them that I asked my guide a few times what their band's name was. She misunderstood and told me the name of the Restaurant, but I'm sure the band was The Hu..( I recocgnise Jaya and Gala).While I was watching Jaya playing a Mongolian flute during their performance, I wanted to know all about it, and wondered what he'd think of the NAF... with you in mind, actually, as I was already wondering who I'd end up gifting the 4 Blue Bear kits 'gift' flutes to..The world is so much smaller than it seems :D Thank you :)

      Actually my friend, my wife and I thought about you the entire time we were on our trip to meet them! we both wondered if there were some connection between the band and you and it is this type of thing that is so important to me. @@BlueBearFlutes Ah. :) I think I did tell you that one of the flutes was gifted to Ganna, our truly lovely human being guide in Mongolia, and another to a multi-family group of Eagle Hunters that we stayed at in Altai area, right near the Chinese, Russian. Kazakh and Mongolian borders. They were beautiful people, and after the patriarch finished playing his Morin Khuur to the extended family group in their Ger that we were sleeping in he invited me to play my flute to the group. I closed my eyes as I played, which I do, and so didn't see his niece, a beautiful 9 year old, staring at me intently the whole way through my playing. After I'd stopped playing, my hubby nudged me to look over her way, and she was still staring at me, almost entranced. When we left the next morning, I left one of the gift flutes tucked under their pillow with a note. They were such delightful people!!! Another flute ended up with a second guide near Lake Baikal in Russia, and the final one with the ten year old son of a hippy in Iceland. His mum had two flutes of her own, amongst other Drums and etc which energy is possibly what drew me to their B&B... So, your flutes are in Iceland, Russia, downtown Mongolia and way out in the Altai mountains with nomadic hersdpeople. One remaining one I mucked up a bit, but delighted in turning it into a vessel f;lute so my two year old granddaughter has a lower than otherwise 5 hole NAF sounding flute and she takes it with her on holidays etc!! :) Thank you for making these sweet kit flutes so affordable that I could gift them!

    A good way to think about creating a good full flow is to relax the upper body and inhale to the syllables ohh-ahh-eee. Don't lift the shoulders in an effort to take in more air, it will simply restrict the flow and reduce capacity.

    I'm a native Canadian with a large supply of large bamboo and I'd like to know if it's better to use dry bamboo or Green Bamboo

    • @davidmurphy6884
      @davidmurphy6884 Před 4 lety +1

      Both can be used, but dry is more stable in the long run as far as the tuning is involved. When crafting from green or even half-cured bamboo, the risk is primarily that the tone of the finished flute will become "sharp" once it is fully dry. This is due to the shrinking of the interior of the bamboo. So if you want to get a feel for it, try to tune a green flute slightly "flat" on the bottom 2 holes so it will come back up in pitch when fully dry.

    Hello, I recently bought a Native American flute (low D) and I am a beginner. I have noticed that I am having difficulties getting the lowest note to come out right. Due to the length of the flute, I am also having some trouble with spreading my fingers enough. But even when I make sure al wholes are covered, the lowest note often comes out screeching or one octave higher than it's supposed to. Also, when I try starting on the lowest note first, often the note will not come out right, either. It often screeches or plays a much higher note. What am I doing wrong? -.-

    • @BlueBearFlutes
      @BlueBearFlutes  Před 3 lety

      The first thing I would suggest is checking my recent troubleshooting video as it will help you to understand if there was something wrong with the flute or with what you are doing. As far as the finger stretch goes, typically lower tone flutes have fingerings that are further apart. This having been said some flute makers make them a little extreme. Be sure that you can recognize the difference between your fingers spread being a little unusual and Incredibly uncomfortable.

    • @badsherlockian2062
      @badsherlockian2062 Před 3 lety

      @@BlueBearFlutes Hello, thanks a lot for the reply. The squeaking did come from my fingers not being placed correctly on the holes. However, now I have discovered that the lowest tone of my low D flute is especially prone to overblowing and sometimes produces a vibrating sound without me doing it on purpose. I regularly dry the block and the area of the sound holes but the lowest tone always overblows whenever I use my tongue to produce the "da-effect" for articulation. Is there something wrong with the flute or are the lowest tones generally very sensitive in bass flutes?

    • @BlueBearFlutes
      @BlueBearFlutes  Před 3 lety

      @@badsherlockian2062 low tones are sometimes more sensitive than higher tones however for beginners, it takes a little practice controlling how fast you are blowing air to produce the tone correctly. My free online classes should help with some of that www.bluebearflutes.com/online-classes
