  • Here we show you how we season, preserve and protect the outside of the Yoder Wichita offset smoker with vegetable oil but you can use talo or any grease or oil of your choice. This method works just as good on any offset smoker when you need protection from rust and other corrosive environmental conditions such as near the ocean salty air. Corrosion can destroy a perfectly good smoker or grill in months so don't let this happen to you!

      Does this work on grills that have a painted coating on the outside? (Oh seeing in video this is a painted grill not pure cast iron)

      i sprayed it as soon as i assembled it with pam canola. still need to season it. i also bought the full cover for it. along with storing it inside.

    Ive had my horizon backyard 16 inch for 10 plus years. Firebox was pretty rusty. I just stumbled on to your video and a few others today. I went out and toasted my wifes spray can of vegetable oil and then wiped the whole smoker with vegetable oil and filled the firebox with charcoal. I have to say im very happy. Water beads off of the old rusted metal now. This worked like an absolute charm. Thanks for the video and conveying your knowledge

    I do the entire outside and inside of my OK Joe (but with Canola Oil) and it looks brand new for 2 years now. Even sitting out in the rain a few times, and with a cover in the winter. Season your smoker and pans and they'll last forever!

      the one thing i wish these smoker companies would do is just like weber. finish it with their baked on enamel finish. my weber is 10 yrs old and it still looks new. even on the bottom where it gets really hot. problem is they would likely charge a fortune to do it. weber does all theirs and their prices aren't that high. probably because they do their own coatings. @@GreenhornBBQbeer

    You need to do this on a regular basis and keep the firebox ash free and use pam inside the firebox

    On my Wichita, I managed to burn the fire box paint on the first cook. I've been using cooking oil to curtail rust and season the exterior metal ever since. Once the flaky bits are off, and the metal turns black, it's nearly impossible to discern where the paint ends, and the seasoned metal begins.
    I haven't seasoned the entire cooker, though, just the fire box. It will be interesting to see how this method works in areas that do not get the extreme heat that the fire box provides.

      My Wichita is put away for the Winter, covered and tarped, along with a blanket of snow. I'll have to wait until Spring to grab a pic. @@GreenhornBBQbeer

    I used trimmed , melted brisket fat ( tallow) for this purpose.

    I use a PAM type spray oil its much faster and easier then just wipe it down and heat it up.

    I just got my Oklahoma joe longhorn for Christmas ! It’s brand new when should I season the outside before my first ?cook and how often should I re coat it. Also the inside I know to do it for sure starting it up but do I need to soray it down after every cook or when do I re season it?

      Hey thanks for watching the video! I would say the inside should get a good spraying down/wiping down with a good oil such as avocado or grapeseed oil, something with a high flash point. Then bring it up to 350 degrees for a few hours to "bake it in". 3 or 4 would do just fine. On the outside I don't think there is any rule how early you can coat it. Some may say sooner or later, but doing it is the big plus here. I wiped vegetable oil on some rusty parts of my trailer and believe me, it seems to halt the progression of it if you renew it now and then.     I got my yoder Wichita back in 2016 it has a fixed stack. Boy o boy I need help. I seasoned it peanut oil. And still do but now the rust is so bad on the firebox. Paint fell off 1st cook. I've sand painted season but rust keeps coming back. What can I do to take off thick rust and keep it off. I last sanded it and reseasoned it may 2020. Now looks so bad. Kansas weather

      Hey buddy, sorry to hear about that rust. I would say any kind of paint is a bad idea at this time. If I were you I would just use veg oil after each cook while its still warm and keep it covered.

      @@g.florez4326 I know you asked more than a year ago. But if you still have this issue, I would recommend using an angle grinder with a wire wheel to get the heavy rust off. That should give you a good base to start seasoning like in this video.

    Will it work on a smoker with a crappy paint job right out of the box? On the second firing of my OK Joe Highland the paint on the fire box basically fell off. I have already sanded and painted with high temp paint. I expect I will do same to over all body.

      Yes, you can oil it before or after every cook. Over time it will be a dramatic change

      I don't get any rust inside. I cover it up good, also the seasoning helps.
