The Mirio argument just falls flat because you're thinking inside the story, Horikoshi certainly didn't made the one for all quirk rule and then made Deku, the point of the take is that Horikoshi could write a wonderful character like Mirio but couldn't do the same with the main character.
I still think that with in the story Deku deserved OFA more, at least according to All Might's criteria, and the thing I'm going to point to is when Eri ran into Deku and Mirio willingly and knowingly let her go back to an obviously abusive house life even if he didn't know exactly what was going on, all in the name of keeping to the mission, but Deku was willing to risk it all right then and there to save Eri. The comparison I like the most is that Mirio is more like Sir Nighteye and Deku is more like All Might because Sir Nighteye favors following the plan exactly as it's laid out with zero room for adjustment, where All Might favors acting when you see it best fit, that is the fundamental difference between Mirio and Deku, Mirio will follow the plan no matter what, while Deku is willing to bend the plan, and even risk having the plan fail just to save one person, which is more All Might, and more like a true Hero, like than Mirio's approach, now that isn't to say Mirio is a bad hero, he's a great hero, just not for OFA, and not as the next Symbol of Peace. What you said was so true when it comes to the stake things and the fights are bland argument because stakes Don't have to be. The universe is about to be destroyed in order to be taken seriously. Even in the war people are saying there's no stakes cuz not everybody's dropping like flies every 10 seconds like this is JJK which makes no sense to me because it's stated time and time again. If the heroes lose AFO would want to take over the planet but now shigiraki wants to destroy the literal planet that they live on and now has the power to do so. Overall, I just genuinely don't get how people can think no death or lack of death means there's no stakes even though only two characters didn't die in the war like I don't know how people want MHA to get much more bigger than the literal planet and everybody who lives on the earth getting murdered and people don't understand that when it comes to stakes like I said they don't have to be universe destroying level stakes for example, if MHA had an arc where they need to retrieve a bottle or something and if they didn't do it, they would get kicked out of school. Those are the stakes they would be kicked out and like you said personal stakes exist as well
I’m a little disappointed that no major characters died during the war arc. Statistically, one of the UA students should’ve kicked the bucket. I know Bakugou came close, but I find it VERY hard to believe that when Shigaraki was literally destroying hundreds upon hundreds of miles of city that NONE of the students died. Like…it’s not that “a lot of people didn’t drop like flies,” that’s just not true. It’s stated that a lot of heroes died during that arc. It’s that nobody IMPORTANT was killed off. I have always admired MHA for its ability to let the characters lose a fight. I rarely ever saw cartoons that straight up let their characters fail at something. It was really refreshing when I was a kid, and it made me excited going into the war arc because they balanced the wins and loses pretty well, so I genuinely didn’t know what to expect. But when you only kill off characters that you know are forgettable, it shows that there is a level of plot armor within the cast. Yes, MHA is 100% willing to hurt it’s main characters, both physically and emotionally. But kill them? In a WAR arc? No. They all have to survive. Idk…I just feel like it would’ve been better if one of the students didn’t come home. It would’ve given the civilians of MHA much more of a reason to be upset at the pros. Not only did they fail to protect the civilians, fail to capture Shigaraki, they brought CHILDREN into the line of fire and one of them died as a result. Especially if you keep the concept of hiding the record of students being there to the public. It would validate the civilians anger towards the heroes a lot more if they tried to pull a cover-up over their heads. Cause right now…I don’t know…on one hand they’re mad at heroes for leaving, but on the other they don’t want the heroes’ help…it seems like the writer isn’t sure why they’re mad at them, he just needs them to be mad at the heroes for the plot to work. A kid dying in battle is plenty of reason to be mad at the system. If they had killed off one of the students, it would’ve been a much more solid reason at being angry at the pros, rather than just…“we’re mad cause you failed!” It also would’ve made Deku’s slightly…I don’t wanna say “angsty,” but angsty personality in season 6 even more heartbreaking. I’m on season 6 right now, I don’t think the switch in personality is too bad because he still has primary elements of his personality beforehand, plus he did just abandon his friends, his family, and the school he loved all Harry Potter style. But I don’t feel like it’s hitting as hard as it should. I don’t think Deku going a bit darker personality wise makes a lot of sense as the story is now. Yes the fight with Shigaraki was traumatizing, but he still has hope that Shigaraki can be saved. As the story is now, it makes more sense for him to be clinging onto that hope, that bright light, rather than the kind of dark tone he’s taking on now. The death of a classmate-, no, a friend, would make Deku’s darker aura feel…right. Plus, killing off a character would better set the tone for season 6 because now the audience knows there’s more to risk than broken bones, there’s more to risk than not using your powers, there’s more to risk than a bad grade or getting expelled. Losing a fight would have higher stakes if one of the main characters had died in the war arc. But instead they exclusively killed off side characters who we barely even knew. … They did kill off the fan-service character which was ballsy, I’ll give them that.
