  • As we continue to pore over the extensive Daggerheart playtest materials library, we're taking notes of all the ways it differs from other TTRPGs. And, all the TTRPGs from which it took inspiration! Let's discuss rolling with hope or fear, the basics of combat, and the use of cards for spells, feats, and maneuvers for starters.

    I have played the starter adventure, mics only and a basic VTT for encounters, with people from a discord server playing together for the very first time. No problems at all with passing the round to others. Granted, we are followers of an actual play channel, and most of the players are experienced players, but it is not a guarantee of a smooth flow of the first game. IIRC the players themselves noticed when a character did not act for a time and asked if they wan to do something.

    Great discussion all! In my own discussions, I expressed concerns about the amount/cost of all the fiddly bits: aka Duality Dice, Action Tokens, Class Dice, Class modifier tokens, Action tracker, GM Tokens/Fear Tokens, and of course, extra card decks when players need duplicate cards for shared domains, ancestry, etc. We had some possible solutions but will be curious to see what comes out of the Beta.

    I completely agree with Fitz's point on wanting to choose abilities based on narrative/thematic flavor. That definitely seems where you will get the most enjoyment instead of taking strong mechanical choices.

      That being said, the Whirlwind Warrior build I tinkered with did RIDICULOUS damage and that was kind of fun

    As someone living on the Gulf Coast, I contend that Florida's purpose in existence is to provide a sandbar that will slow down hurricanes as they approach the Gulf.

    I really liked the point about min/maxing on character. I think a great example of that is the Orderborne Community. Fully developing an order to come from is going to tailor your values/sayings that let you have that d20 for Hope more often.

    • @KRohlyPoly
      @KRohlyPoly Před 2 měsíci

      Also, the only min/max I think I have found is on the Vengeance Guardian as a crit fishing build. At lvl 8, their crit percentage is 23.6%, if you upgrade the subclass twice. Being a Halfling would raise that chance to, I think, 31.25%, but my probability math isn't my best strength.

    • @KRohlyPoly
      @KRohlyPoly Před 2 měsíci

      If you pick the right domain cards, then ~30% of your attacks would net you, in addition to regular bonuses, 2 choices from a hit point, an armor slot, or +1 HP of damage; you and all allies 1 HP or 1d4 stress; an additional hope or an additional stress; a hit point or an additional stress. And, if you make the attack while you have at least 3 hope and are level 10, then you can swap your 5th card for Battle Monster for free and spend 5 hope to just do max damage.

    People could always just write the cards onto a post-it if it bothers them to buy them? Are the cards even going to be sold separately or do they come with the physical books/digital downloads. I can't imagine the cards would be sold separately unless they were the Fancy Cards.

      I mean right now people can print them for open beta~ I think people are just complaining because it's not dnd *shrugs*
      It's a game once it's done I'm sure people can buy the game with the cards, besides there are legit card games out there where people buy packets upon packets so I really don't understand why people have their undies in a bunch.

    My bigger concern with getting have 1 player go over and over is that if a character is OP, it becomes good for the party to just let them go over and over, while a weak character fails to contribute AND gives the GM action tokens

    • @MagiofAsura
      @MagiofAsura Před 2 měsíci

      Stress and hope usually fuel features.
      If their futures use stress, theyll be killed pretty quickly.
      Plus it will be up to the GM to shut that down quickly.
      If damage is below the minor threshold but above zero, the target will gain stress. If you marked all your stress, you start marking HP. Once all your HP is marked, you are dead.

    My experience with initiative-less games is that you just go around the table unless someone has a burning idea to jump in, then move to the best player.

    In response to the cast wondering how combat would flow If its a discord only game. My mind goes to making a discord channel called Action Tracker with each player leaving a message when they perform the actions the gm can then delete their messages as they consume the action.
    I....can't see the game working easily text only or even play by post though they'd need to set stricter one post per cycle minimum rules or that can go way out of hand.

    • @EnterThePocketDimension
      @EnterThePocketDimension  Před 2 měsíci

      Oh THAT'S a fun call! We play virtually, but with full voice/video/VTT. For now, our GM is planning to use physical tokens still, with the hopes that VTTs will soon roll out some action tracker functionality.

      I play Lancer on a server that has a custom macro in Roll20 for players to mark when their turn has ended. I can see using something like that to track actions in Daggerheart.

  • @MagiofAsura
    @MagiofAsura Před 2 měsíci

    My only concern for the game is proficiency. Without it, in late game, you are merely trying to kill end game monsters with stress. Im not sure if thats by design or an oversight.
    A real oversight tho is having a proficiency of six near end level and rolling 6dx or a fireballs worth of damage and counting it up for every attack.

    its not really that different from a lot of 5e homebrew out there. Using Dungeon World Bonds and having a losely defined proficiency bonus
