  • Water Kefir Grains are a great way to make Lacto fermented drink from sugar water, juice or coconut oil. The Grains used to ferment water kefir can last indefinitely! With proper care, and part of that care includes giving your Grains a rest every 2 to 3 ferments. Join me today as Ishow you how! Here ‪@muchadoaboutsomething‬ kefir, ##

Remember this is for giving your kefir grains a rest, this is not for long term storage.

I never heard of storing them like that but your grains look so healthy. I'm going to try it.

I guess mine have been resting for 6 months in the same container I bought them in. More like hibernation😂 I bought them with the intentions of making my own water kefir, but I never got to it till now. They took a week to become active again but they are thriving. Will definitely keep this tip in mind when I think they need another “hibernation period.”

Not sure they will survive as they are not dehydrated and have nothing to feed on whilst in the fridge.

They don't need to feed, they are resting. You can feed them when you take them out of the fridge. I am sharing the info from the place where I bought the kefir Grains. Thank you for watching and commenting!

They do not need to feed as they are "resting" for a short period. You feed them when you take them out. Sharing this info from the place that I purchased the kefir Grains. They will live, I do this periodically, as needed!

@@muchadoaboutsomething thank you for your explanation. I think they should have mentioned to you that you should not use anything metal as the grains don’t like it. Only plastic or glass. However if you feel yours are ok then you have some super grains there.

You have a good point, glass bowls are preferable. I do use these stainless steel bowls and strainer for giving these kefir Grains a rest, and I have not had a problem with my Grains. I don't know if they are super Grains or not, but they are still thriving. They are not in the stainless steel but for a short time. It took a little longer to make the video. They were actually resting in the glass quart jar. I am certainly no expert in kefir, I did share how I give my kefir Grains a rest. It works for me!

@@muchadoaboutsomething hey I am going to try your method of resting because it’s a lot easier than the way I have been doing it up until now, ie dehydrating then storing or freezing. If it works for you then it will probably work for me also. I was only commenting as I have been following other advice which it more complicated. Thanks

hi donna. is it necessary to cover it with breathable paper or i could simply cover it with a lid when putting them in refrigerator?

    • @muchadoaboutsomething
      @muchadoaboutsomething  Před měsícem

It needs to "breathe" because it is live cultures, you can cover it with a lid, however, I would leave the lid very loose.

You don't have to feed the grains will they rest? Wow!

They are only resting for a sort period of time, long term neglect of feeding will not be sustainable.

I tried this once and my grains didn’t recover. I read in my insert that came with my grains to store in sugar water and change every 3 days or the grains will consume each other. Kind of confusing to me. I’d be glad to know if you have any other solutions. Thanks for your info!

These are actually the instructions that came with my Grains when I purchased them. I have used this method since making kefir water. There are so many factors to the maintaining of the kefir Grains. This is the only method that I use. I have no other recommendations. I suggest further research on line . Thank you for watching, hope you find a method that works for you.Remebering this method is for giving your kefir Grains a rest, not for storing them.

  • @kid_video_play_rec_food_clock

    That's good information.
I have a lot of milk kefir grains in my refrigerator now can I take half of them to transform in Kefir water grains? With the same process of cleaning them with distilled water and then use it for making water kefir?
Plz share your understanding with this

I don't know, milk and kefir grains are different, most people say they don't switch well but now and then I hear someone say they've done it. If you have lots of them, try it, and you'll sill still have plenty if you lose them.

A little tart. You can drain the Grains and then add juice and it's better. It's a good way to get off sodas.
