    Seemed to me like the officers that had cool attitudes were the ones that were enlisted first and the officers that were more stuck up were only officers. I think going enlisted first is the best route. You build a better knowledge as a leader because you know what it was like for those privates and what not.

      I agree, as in my industry I send our "officers" into the mire for a month before they sit at the table.

      I haven’t been in the Military, but that sounds about right. From my experience, a Boss stands in the back and yells at his workers, without knowing what they’re going through. A Leader stands alongside with his men to go above and beyond.

      Fun fact: Officers who are Prior enlisted also get paid significantly more than folks w/ same rank w/ no enlisted experience

  • @suhbro5928

    Awesome video! I’ve been giving it my all to ready myself for the military, and this is exactly what I needed to hear.
    A year ago from today I was over 400 lbs, I’ve made a complete change and commitment to better myself. After losing 220lbs I’m currently sitting at 190-195lbs. Everyday is another step closer to reaching my goal, and the fitness level that is required of me to enlist.
    Thank you so much for making videos like this. As I continue to chase this dream of joining the Military and becoming an Officer, videos like this give me a great sense of hope.

    This is what I’m doing. I’m about to be a junior, gonna skip one semester and do basic and AIT and then come back to do ROTC in the spring. It seemed the best route of the ones i looked at.

    • @slavojzizzek7562
      @slavojzizzek7562 Před 6 lety +1

      You're going NG or Reserves, right? If you're going Active this won't work. If this sounds obvious, a lot of people are oblivious to the fact that you surrender 90% of control of the day-to-day details of your life when you go active. Good move on going ROTC instead of OCS. The packet wait time for OCS is rough, and the course itself is difficult and highly grating and unnecessary for people who've been in the actual Army.

    • @crazybay8mile
      @crazybay8mile Před 6 lety +1

      Slavoj Zizzek I’ll be going NG. I’m a student at Oklahoma State and they said doing basic and ait right before junior year is a really good idea. Because I’ll be an e3 going in and caught up on the classes required for ROTC.

    I did two years of community college then three years active enlisted in the Marine Corps before transferring to the reserves and finishing school. My inspiration to become an officer was my first company commander, Cpt. Merritt, C co, 3rd Amtrac Bn. The nearest thing was going back to 3rd tracs and seeing some of the guys I had served with. SSgt Chaves was now Gunny Chaves, Sgt Woods was now SSgt Woods and 1st Sgt Corrales was now SgtMaj Corrales!

    • @jimgood1949
      @jimgood1949 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jesuspavon6372 Not formal benefits like pay and allowances, but the intangible benefit of having experience to prepare for the entry level lieutenant’s job. The experience and training as an enlisted soldier help you understand your troops’ jobs and living conditions which might make you empathize with them more, but that really isn’t something that requires a few years of enlisted service. OCS and initial officer courses should give you a quite adequate preparation for your duties, and after the first year or two as an officer, the things you learned while enlisted are irrelevant. That is the benefit that I was referring to.

  • @Kraggathor
    @Kraggathor Před 3 lety

    The challenge with the decision to enlist before signing up for a commission was a matter of perspective in the enlisted vs. commission route. Several years ago, I would've enlisted to ensure that I would have a good grasp on a team of people to allow them to function and follow suit to function as a team. Now that I've gotten older, I've committed to the decision to commission as I understand the implications of enlisting and the decisions that many perform while in. My ability to choose to perform managerial functions through maturity and understand the decisions that enlisted make throughout their careers had to be thought through to better understand the core concepts and behaviors of those who decide to better understand motivations. It was a worthy investment to consider now that I'm going in as an officer.

My xo showed up at the barracks and told us it was bullshit no other officers were their with him and they had the day off. Xo told us to just hang out in the barracks and do what we wanted but we had to keep it quiet. XO stayed at the CQ desk to make sure no one walked up. The last hour of our detail Top showed up. XO rang upstairs and we all grabbed brooms and mops. Top walked around and told us we did a good job and to take Monday off lol

Should I enlist now (RESERVE IS WHAT IM AFTER), come back home to work as a nurse while doing my BSN (bachelors), then commission to officer, or just wait til I have my BSN? 2. If now, what job should I get in medical side that’s going to be best for me as a nurse( even tho I need a BSN, I wanna stay in he medical side)? 4. Would I be enlisting as an e3 since I’ll have an associates degree? What is the difference in e1 and e3? Some info about me that might help: 27yo, single mom of two kids, with interest of joining reserve for now. Maybe go active later but not sure yet. Kinda wanna get a feel of the army life first. Thanks in advance! I know it’s alot but I’m hoping you or someone else can help with some feedback! Haha..

    Apparently the Army does these calculations differently. If this were the Navy, then yes the Time-in-Service(TIS) would count - for the pay scale. As in, "O-1 over 2 years etc". However, the Active Duty Service Date (Or Active Duty Base Date) is the one used for calculating 20-year retirement. Actual days of active duty as a reservist would count: so your ~8 months for BCT and AIT, plus drill weekends. Different services may run their personnel accounts a bit differently, of course.

    • @jimgood1949

    I'm an old person, and a doctoral level therapist for over half-a-century. I have 2 undergrads. Still.....I nearly always encouraged younger people to join the military. Free undergrad college and an actual retirement plan. Even 45 years ago, there was still talk of whether social security would even be around when I retired. And I worked summer jobs to do my undergrad without student loans. But it was a hard slog and my GPA was not awesome as a result of working full time during the school year.
    The military, as many of my friends and younger brother's friends did seemed like a no-brainer. That said, back then, the odds you were going to be sent to war were low. Today, its nearly a guarantee IF your MOS is a combat one. So, there are reasons now to not choose the military or at least ones that might see direction action.
    That said, I still think, particularly if you are very young, to consider the military. I saw the military do some very good maturing to those I knew who did it. I would have also benefited from that muturing, though I knew enough about myself that I knew that the military would not be a good fit for me. But for arguably most others, but certainly for some, it can still be a - very - good thing, especially if you don't know what you "want to be when you grow up."
    I will say one more thing. Special forces. If you intend to always be fighting and/or if you retire from the military, you are planning on going into contracting, by all means. But my best friend was a Ranger and the military intel person in his unit. It was very sexy and he got to do some amazing training and even some amazing real life missions (remember it was 40 years ago or so). That said, when he got out, he had a wife and 2 kids to support and he ended up driving a cab for several years. He re-enlisted in a much more civilian-viable MOS and today he is making 6-figures. But when he got out of the military as a Ranger, he was screwed. Yeah, he did some cool, high speed stuff. But his resume, back then anyway, got his application tossed into the round file when you would think it was the exact opposite. Huge bummer and I didn't agree with it obviously as my friend is one of the smartest, most capable people I have ever known. (He is also one of the best men and husbands I have ever known, along with my brother). However, that was the reality back then. Today, I don't think that's the case. Businesses generally have more knowledge of what it takes to be special forces and realize that in most cases, that's a quality hire.
    Matt's channel has some exceptional advice, from someone who has been there. If you're considering the military, watch all his videos, that's all I'm saying.

    When I joined the Navy I never thought about being an officer. I came in with an associates degree and after my first 8 months or so some officers took me under their wings and showed me how things are in their world. Soon enough they convinced me to go that route

    I just finished college and if I had to do it over again I would’ve joined the military after high school. I see college as a waste of time unless you’re pursuing engineering or graduate school. Also the cost of college goes up but the value of a degree doesn’t. It would be nice to see the federal government getting out of the student loan business with public universities, that’ll probably force colleges to get rid of useless programs and other forms of wasteful spending.

      Having a high GPA is huge. So 300APFT score and 3.5+ GPA. There isn't a set amounts of points you need so the best thing for you to do is just focus on building yourself as an officer and perform well at Advanced Camp.

    So after you have been an officer for a while, do you have any officer friends? I was part of a electronics maintenance squadron (4 officers and 200 enlisted) at small state side Air Force base. Once I got quarters allowance and moved off base (they closed the BOQ) wearing the uniform was the most military thing I did. But there was no chance of friendship or camaraderie. All of the enlisted and the CO were out of bounds. If the two other officers whom I didn't usually see during the day were married they would not even go to the O club for lunch.

    I think the #1 reason why Enlisting before becoming an officer is because if you're going for the retirement, you have a 20% chance of not being promoted late in your career and getting kicked out of the military loosing your retirement wasting 15+ years with no reward.

When considered enlisting but did not the Recruiter said after basic training I could be schooled for Aviation Electrician Mate. Let's say I did enlist and after awhile, I felt hay, I would like to be an officer. As converted to officer would I still have anything to do avec Aviation electricianing?

    Awesome video! Out of curiosity for those interested in going the OCS path, does the fact that the army requires you to go to the enlisted basic training first make one a mustang by default?

    • @jimgood1949
      @jimgood1949 Před 4 lety +1

      The term Mustang is more of a Navy thing. When I was in the Army, you almost never heard of officers with prior enlisted service being called a Mustang.
      No formal requirements for being a Mustang, but it tends to imply that you had several years of enlisted service, not just Basic and OCS.
