    Because my parents grew up during the depression in the 1930’s and then during WWII, they held onto things and were careful about what they let go. My husband and I downsized and moved to a condo last year. Thank God my sister could take so many family items that have sentimental value. It’s a hard lesson to learn but living with less is very freeing.

      Thank you for sharing! It's so interesting how emotional our relationship is to our things, and how intergenerational our habits are. I'm glad you were able to find a loving home for your important things.

    I have a friend who’s a sustainability expert. I remember being shocked at her statement that there was nothing inherently wrong with fast fashion clothing, so long as the piece of clothing you purchase gets used many times by you and prevents you from needing to buy another piece of clothing. She loved Uniqlo because although they’re technically fast fashion and not the most “sustainable” production-wise, their clothes are usually timeless, really well made and can be worn for years. She thought the main issue in the world is that people nowadays view shopping as a hobby, not a chore. This has lead to the world’s massive overconsumption problem

    • @Bekah_Sun
      @Bekah_Sun  Před rokem +2

      Definitely a good point about overconsumption and shopping being a hobby, and a very recent phenomenon in history. Your friend is doing important work! For me the decision is as much about sustainability as it is about divesting from corporations that use sweatshop labor and/or exploit workers. I'd also love to support more artisans and small businesses. And if durability over many years is the goal with clothing, I want things that are well-made with high quality fabrics. So that's all to say, I think there are many factors in my decision to move away from fast fashion - sustainability as a broad term encompassing the individual and systemic being one of them.

    Thank you for sharing and articulating this!!!!
    I resonated with so much of it... Reflection on why I keep so much, how to prioritize what I keep, recognizing the shame and moving forward, with the approach of acquiring less!!
    And something that really stood out to me was when you said sometimes we're holding on to the memory of having liked it, rather than currently liking it or currently serving us. This is going to help me when I'm having those sentimental feelings behind getting rid of something that I know I should probably get rid of... The stress of too many (unserving) possessions is taxing!

    A lot of the containers can be recycled through Terracycle. There are free opportunities at places like Sephora, and you can also buy Terracycle boxes for various types of plastic packaging. You need to empty out the contents first, which sadly ends up in landfill, but at least the plastic does not. Its a bit more effort but worth it. I struggle with this too and sometimes have products I simply can't use up before they go bad. Thanks for the great and honest video.

    Love this video! Declutters always make me wonder where the products go - you mentioned you rehome a few things, what will you do with the rest?
    I'm with you on the whole "just buy less things so you don't have to get rid of as much" ethos. Do you think you'll share some of your shopping guidelines at any point? i.e. How you choose brands to support, if/when you stop supporting them?

    • @Bekah_Sun

      Anything that's brand new and unopened I'll donate to a local shelter. I'll definitely share my decisions as I go! I'm not sure I will have hard and fast "guidelines" per se, but will share the journey and thought process around decision-making.

    I’m pretty good about giving away things I don’t use around the house but for some reason I hate throwing away makeup 😂 I’ve done some decluttering by throwing away things that were old/expired especially anything for eyes and lips. That really opened my eyes so I’m on a no buy for makeup/skincare/fragrances this year. Also, I’m trying to give anything that I don’t use (but is still a recent purchase) over to my sister because she will use it up. I did keep some just for the aesthetic but I’m not introducing anything else for just the sake of collecting. I did keep my big Marc jacobs bronzer because it’s just the best ❤ And yes the biba pallete is my go to all inclusive set of neutrals so no more eyeshadow for me for awhile 😂

    This was awesome! I relate to so much of this. I find it very hard to get rid of things that I really wanted to like, but ended up not working for me. That is silly though- I like the idea of the item, but I don’t actually use it/wear it. This motivated me to pass those things on while they are still in good condition.

  • @alittlebitofgoldglitter3935

    I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about this topic! I sent you an IG message before watching & im glad you touched on the landfill guilt. That + the children of immigrants mentality is so hard for me. Also trying to be more mindful of what I’m bringing in so that overall I’m less wasteful!

  • @SRoberts815
    @SRoberts815 Před rokem

    I would really appreciate learning how you define “fast fashion”! I definitely am trying to learn how to choose well made pieces that will last a long time, but like, where do my J crew sweaters fit into that? I get more than a couple of years wear out of them, but I don’t think they are all amazing quality or ethically made. A lot of mid range brands are in this gray area for me…

    • @SRoberts815
      @SRoberts815 Před rokem

      Also! As a former United students against sweatshops activist back in the day… I’m very cognizant of the anti-Asian sentiment in a lot of conversations about sweatshops and fast fashion. I’ve been happy to see more brands getting B cert while still using factories in places like China and India, AND I understand the environmental/social benefits of shopping things made closer to home.

    • @Bekah_Sun
      @Bekah_Sun  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for bringing this up! The anti-Asian sentiment in the states is very real, and so is the exploitation of workers both domestically and internationally. I'm not sure I have all the answers, and I think it really is on a case by case basis to figure out which brands align with your values. I try to remember that it's neither a zero sum game, nor an individual one. For me I'm starting with not shopping at H&M, Zara, the major retailers. But really I think it's about finding excitement and inspiration in artisans/designers/shops that make me want to learn more about how my clothing is made and designed. So it feels less like I'm "limiting" myself and more like I'm diving deeper into a craft. Will definitely share more as I go!

      You're really asking the tough questions! I think it depends on your skin type.
      Dieux Skin's Deliverance is better suited IMO for all skin types, even oily skin types. It's a lighter consistency that sinks in quickly while still hydrating.
      MAKE's Lactonic Serum is good for normal to dry skin types because it is moisturizing. ntheirew emulsion is really beautiful and is also suited probably for normal to dry skins because it is richer and contains oils. Or, oily skins could use it as their moisturizer and probably find that's enough.
      I know I'm kind of cheating but I just think they're different and it's kind of like comparing apples to oranges. I hope this helps though!
