    Introduction:
    This is the new Mi Band 7, which still resembles its predecessor, but now has a larger 1.62-inch always-on AMOLED display. However, as impressive as that beautiful and bright display is, can the new Mi Band 7 reliably measure and track your health metrics? Over the last few days I have done different scientific tests on this new Mi Band 7, and I found it seems to be good at some things, but also struggles with some specific measurements. Now, in other videos I have shown that the previous generation, the Mi Band 6, was pretty bad when it was launched, but it improved quite drastically with firmware updates. Let’s see if this new Mi Band 7 also needs some time to get good performance, or if it is already quite good from the start. In this video, I will do some initial scientific testing of the heart rate measurements, sleep tracking, oxygen saturation measurements and step counting of the Mi Band 7. Now, this is a first set of tests, as I just received the device this week, and a full scientific review will follow as I do more detailed tests over the next few weeks.
    The first thing you will notice about the new Mi Band is that it’s bigger, with a 1.62-inch Always-on AMOLED display compared to the 1.56-inch display of the Mi Band 6, which according to Xiaomi, increases the viewing area by 25%. However, the pixel density remains the same as before at 326 PPI. Xiaomi also created new icons, new effects, and restyled data visuals to go with this larger display. The Mi Band 7 is said to have 120 sports modes, and now has continuous blood oxygen monitoring and low SpO2 alerts. In addition, the Mi Band 7 also has all-day heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring and also stress monitoring, which as you might know, I am generally quite skeptical of. The Mi Band 7 is water resistant up to 5 atmospheres, similar to the Mi Band 6, which means it can withstand water pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters. The main thing that is lacking is that it still doesn’t have built-in GPS. Xiaomi says that the Mi Band 7 has a battery life of 14 days with regular usage, however, I haven’t been able to validate this yet. Also, a lot of the more advanced features, like always on display, continuous SpO2 measurements and stress monitoring will drain the battery faster. It is a bit unclear what the band will sell for in the US and Europe, but it will probably be around 50 dollars. Now, I was able to connect the Mi Band 7 to two different apps on iOS: Mi Fitness and Zepp Life. I ended up using Zepp life, because that was the only way I was able to export my exercises to Strava. I had to do it indirectly though, by logging into the normal Zepp app with the same account.

      Hi Rob!
      The new mi band 8 is out. And the manufacturer is different from the past generations. This generation is directly manufactured by Xiaomi, while the past ones were actually by Amazfit.
      I tested the accuracy of its optical heart rate sensor. Compared to my chest strap, it’s surprisingly accurate. Even does not have the 5 sec delay which the Apple watches do.
      Can you do another comprehensive review of the new Mi band 8?

    Thank you so much for this review! Made me go for this product, and I keep coming back to your video. I needed a device that's small on the wrist and tracks fitness data with reasonable precision and can help me gauge my sleep stats (primarily deep sleep) so I can understand how to sleep better. The fact alone that this records steps, distance, heart rate, and deep sleep accurately enough for a layman (coupled with my phone, it also tracks my exercise routes super accurately) is perfect for me in and of itself and this device has so much more to offer in terms of notifications when you reach your steps goal for the day. It tells you when you've been sitting for too long, has guided breathing exercises with vibrations on your wrist to help you calm you down, etc. I also have vibration alarms that remind me to go to sleep at a regular time and help me get up in the morning (without bothering my girlfriend!). Most importantly, this device is discreet and helps me gamify my daily exercise, making me walk more and and make an effort to stress less, and it generally gets me stoked to take better care of myself. I like wearing a classic wrist watch as my main watch, and I can just put this on the opposite wrist and turn off the screen. It's light and sleek enough that I don't even notice it's there. Also, the screen is awesome. Highly recommended!

    Love your content. your videos helped me choose a device with much higher confidence. Here's an idea to quantify the accuracy of the GPS data. Export your GPS data on the map as a png (Screen clipping should work), then with a digitizer tool such as webplotdigitizer, get the x and y coordinates of the tracks with a predefined spacing. For the reference, use a predefined route, drawn on the map or imported, then export the coordinates with the same spacing values for both x and y. The difference between two data sets should be straight forward from there. Admittedly, this approach doesn't include the time variable of the acquired locations for the track. But probably, that does not matter much as long as one data point at a stationary location can be confirmed that was acquired within a reasonable time frame. Let me know what you think if you read this comment.

    Wanted so much for this review, i hope xiaomi fixes the HR issues with firmware updates. Just a question, can you imagine why most watches struggles specifically with the rem sleep of the sleep tracking?

    • @Spacemonkeymojo
      @Spacemonkeymojo Před 2 lety +31

      I would say it's because REM sleep would be hard to quantify based on a wrist-worn health tracker. REM is characterised by brain waves, something a wrist-worn tracker can't track. REM sleep might affect heart rate or HRV but the effect is probably similar to deep or light sleep, which is why fitness trackers tend to get them mixed up. Maybe something else like skin temperature or something changes during REM, which could be tracked, but that would require the tracker to have a skin temp sensor which I don't know if many actually have. Sucks because I would like to track my sleep stages, that headband Rob wears looks like a good investment for those who want to track their sleep stages.

      @@Spacemonkeymojo I think the Galaxy Watch5 will have a temperature sensor.

      Notice that MiBand 6 was much better than Band 7 for HR. The 7 does need improvements in firmware to match algorithms with specifics of the sensor, it seems.

    Another great video! Do you have any plans to test the new Garmin Forerunner 255? Your Garmin videos seem to do well with views, and this device generated a lot of excitement because it includes a lot of the higher-end functions for $350 (plus the inclusion of the S model for smaller wrists). Thank you for your dedication to this channel :)

    Which one works best/most precise?

    I have a question. I have been using my Apple watch 5 for a long time, and I just bought this new MI 7. One thing that I cannot figure out is : When I walk on the treadmill the MI 7 doesn’t count the distance without me swinging my arm ? Both my Iwatch and my Zeblaze Startos can do that. I have tried different modes ( indoor walk, treadmill ) but I don’t get a count that’s anywhere near correct? Do you know why that is ? Thanks for a good review 😃😃😃
