  • The Rio Grande Valley has been at the frontline of some of the most contentious recent conflict in the US memory. But they’ve also found themselves at the frontline of another kind of conflict - and HIV epidemic affecting increasing numbers of young, queer, latino men.
VICE went to the US/ Mexico border to see why HIV is affecting increasing numbers of latinx youth, and to meet a small group of drag queens who are using their platform fight the stigma surrounding HIV head on.

My brother explained to me as a little girl that people who are hiv positive are not contagious through hugs and kisses, and we pose more of a health threat to them due to compromised immune systems. I never forgot that. It changed my perception in the 80s.

@@Misterhiggersit’s true. Germs like bacteria, viruses, Protozoa etc that are anywhere and everywhere that pose not threat to us can kill a person with AIDS. Like pneumocystis as example, a fungi that is everywhere. We breath it in every day, but it’s harmless to us. That fungus has killed millions of people with AIDS.

      Greetings,
Actually, Abstinence *is* the only Biblical option because God said that sex outside of Marriage is a sin. It is called, *Fornication* . The Bibles says that fornicators will NOT enter into Heaven. (1 Corinthians 6:9) Unless they repent and stop fornicating.(Hints, they would not be a fornicator anymore.)
And for your information, contraception is ANTI-CHRISTIAN and ANTI-BIBLICAL because it literally means, "Against Life". Followers of Jesus _Celebrate_ Life and cherish it because we believe that the God of the Bible is the Creator of Life and that since he created it, *_HE_* controls it; (Isaiah 42:5) Not us.
Thanks for taking the time to read this my dear. May you accept and serve Jesus Christ before it is too late.

Anyway, good luck trying to convince people to not have sex based on *your* religion views, it won't happen, and if you close your eyes to the problem, it will only help to spread problems like those.

how come you don't read books on the internet when there are free books on the world's greatest novels online? It's because there never was a demand for reading in your life, much like how there is little demand for sexed in the lives of many in the United States and other parts of the world when the region is (often) republican with minimal infrastructure in schools and education and job availability as well as industrial progress (eg. most of the "south" to mid-west). Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has internet access; only a little over half do in the world. That's why more education needs to be brought to the federal level, not just in small community groups like your sheltered ass.

A lot of people have HIV and they are unaware of it, that applies to any human, regardless of sexuality, they are physically healthy for years, the problem is, they continue infecting with HIV other people because they think they are healthy without a sign of symptoms. But depending in the lifestyle of the person, the virus doesn't evolve for years, so they don't get near the stage of getting AIDS, it could be for different reasons and circumstances (good lifestyle, preventing other diseases, etc).

Not teaching high school students this stuff is dangerous. I never understood how we have a separation of church and state yet religious people try to force their stuff on everyone. I my high school they taught us and if a parents views conflicted then they could have their child removed.
They should be teaching people in high risk groups about Truvada and how taking it prevents HIV.

All public schools have required kids to take sex education for decades. I was in 8th grade for it in 1998. The only thing I can think of is it's possible private schools aren't subject to those rules so if these kids are in Catholic school they MIGHT not get that education. The amount of young adults claiming they were clueless about it in this documentary seems unrealistic to me. Plus, they're in an area embedded with HIV... I think it's more likely they haven't come to terms with the fact they were told about it and ignored good advice, and that will now cost them their lives. Not to mention the rest of their lives they will live as outcasts.

No. Sin has proven disastrous time and time again. Abstinence *is* the _only_ option because God said that sex outside of Marriage is *SIN* . It's called, *FORNICATION* . The Bibles says that fornicators will NOT enter into Heaven. 1 Corinthians 6:9

Amore Deus But not everyone believes in your god, or follows your holy book. If parents want to encourage their children to be abstinent according to their religion then that's their freedom. But children should still learn the essentials in school. They should learn how their bodies work and how to prevent catching diseases and getting pregnant, because if they don't, one mistake could be life ruining.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3194801/
"Using the most recent national data (2005) from all U.S. states with information on sex education laws or policies (N = 48), we show that increasing emphasis on abstinence education is positively correlated with teenage pregnancy and birth rates." Abstinence only education = more unwanted pregnancies.

I have been HIV+ for 18 years - the issue is certainly not just a boarder crisis in Texas not by a long shot - I live in Texas and everything that was stated in this doc as a challenge effects all positive people. I get it - this doc is trying to add fuel to the illegal immigration and racial issues - using HIV as another tool to do so but facts are this shit is hard to deal with no matter where or who you are. My biggest mistake was trusting people not to tell others about my diagnosis - now that my life has been seriously damaged, posting this kind of info has no repercussions. You find out who the fakes are really fast in that situation. I also worked in social services as the transportation coordinator for the rural H.I.V/A.I.D.S outreach and wow are my eyes open to how those services are misused and the workers are basically passionless data entry bots, at least in this area. I think its great that HIV going thorough any community is highlighted but yeah - its just political - this shit is going on in every race and culture and has been for a long time now.

Last time I checked, two wrongs don't make a right. Two negatives, do not equal a positive.
Congrats, you're part of the problem.
Sure, people don't deserve to be sick or die...simply from having sex.
But it does NOT matter to anyone if these people are gay, a different race or anything...if they're being irresponsible and getting 'stung' for said irresponsibility...at the end of the day, it's all the same. Act stupid, and face the consequences.
Stupidity and irresponsible behavior is NOT exclusive to a race, creed, religion or sexuality.

Sara I'm pretty sure anal sex is not only the province of homosexual sex positive. Like many others, I'm a male who's had plenty of anal sex with women. But I also have used protection when not in a dedicated relationship and have undergone testing regularly as it is a public health necessity in this day and age. The problem is Texas's lack of sex-ed realism with their abstinence or nothing sex-ed (yes, that's also a dig on another supposed "realism" that the GOP thinks is clever).

It’s easy for those of us that are educated to judge someone uneducated in sexual health. I’m fortunate to have had an amazing sexual education, thanks to a great health teacher that was dedicated to her work. That’s not the case with everyone. Something as simple as condoms, truly is not common sense to everyone. You realize that, when you ask someone why they aren’t using protection and their response is, “It’s not like I can get pregnant.” Many of these low income communities are dealing with a SEVERE lack of sexual education, as well as basic education, so these things that may be “common sense” to you, truly has to be TAUGHT to others. I mean babies as young as 13 contracting the virus from having sex and not knowing anything about what they’re doing and you all don’t think this is an education issue?

This is the same area where girls are legitimately surprised when they get pregnant, despite knowing they did not use a condom. Parents don't talk about sex education, and if their child is gay, they definitely won't talk about it. I had to learn on my own through psychology courses and the internet.

HAHAHHA OMG THANK YOU!! this actually kills me she just wants everyone to know she is latino too and it's like she purposely puts the word latino in as many times as possible. I sit here and watch any video she is in and repeat 'latino' after her every time and say "see I am 'latino' not just you"

EvanEverything yeap. That goes hand in hand with the typical.. “when is convenient I will say I am a caucasian american”.. when its not I will say “I am a ‘latina”.
The way she says latina is just not meaningless. She knows how she saying and why. Pathetic.

I thought the term “queer” was considered a word that was negative in association with being gay, yet I heard it used multiple times in the piece... And, for those out there saying that (anyone) deserves to get this horrible disease simply because they are gay...you need mental help. And, just remember, what you put out into the world frequently comes back to bite you in the ass. If this is the type of learning lesson you need, keep it up. Best wishes to those affected by this horrible disease. No one, no matter what, deserves this.❤️

A lot of us in the LGBTQIA+ community use queer as an inclusive way of not only self identifying but also reclaiming it from its previous use as a slur.

Mortimer Gotcha! Thank you for the clarification. While I understand, still, there is a part of me that cringes each time I hear the term. But, and that’s a big BUT, it’s not my life that is affected by this word...other than the feelings hearing it evokes. I simply do my part to assure that hatred doesn’t spread to any generation I have influence over...including my own. Much love, Shelbie =)❤️💋

I have a PREP appointment next week. I am nervous and kind of reluctant to try (start) it. Has anyone here been on PREP?? What has been your experience?? I am afraid that somewhere down the line, we will find out that we have contracted a newer, treatment-resistant strain of the virus after using PREP....

I appreciated this video more than I thought I would. It is very important to cover issues such as this and to bring the much needed awareness to the issue at hand. It was quite informative, but as a young Catholic hispanic male, I see there was some misrepresentation of what Catholic teaching is:
1.) If someone is gay, they should come out and be able say it. The Church is not in support of someone hiding their sexual orientation. Nobody should hide that part of their identity. All parents especially those that claim to be a Catholic christians, must foster an environment of love and honesty. While Catholic parents might not be in support of their children's life style, they must learn to love them like Christ would.
2.) The traditional virtue of chastity (or abstinence education) is not puritanical. This view is simply a stereotype and not true teaching. The church teaches that sexual desire is a blessing from God. It is good. It can give us energy and vitality. Abstinence is a act that helps put those desires to in to correct context.
I am interested for more of this series in the future. Thank you and God bless.

i am 29 and didnt not learn the seriousness off HIV or STD's period until my mid twenties going to school for nursing. My school never gave sex ed. i didnt really even get the sex speech from the parents as a teenager. So the fact that many of the people in video say they had no knowledge of these things is believable.

question is if they hide the fact that they have HIV, what safety can their spouse/lovers/children/neighbor/friend can do to avoid getting infected. also, what prevent the HIV patients from going on a vengeance streak and infect everyone aka if we know who have HIV, we can prevent the spreading from going further.
