- Indian Rival to Elon Musk's X Shuts Down After Failed Merger Talks | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Indian social media app Koo, once positioned as a competitor to Twitter or X, is now shutting down after talks with multiple buyers failed to materialise over past months. This comes after the founders sought to sell the company. But after prolonged discussions, the buyout talks fell through. Launched in the year 2020 to serve the Indian market, Koo faced various challenges in securing new funding since last year, prompting it to explore mergers with various other platforms, but none of the talks fructified. Palki Sharma brings you the full story.

KOO failed because its just a copy of X, they failed to introduce something new.
Stick with Weibo lol
Yes. We mostly copy
Yep, tech replica and product are different things!
It does not matter..if they copy..we failed it..accept it and don't give excuses
That's not the reason of failure..it failed boz celebraties r not on koo .. nothing can success unless actors n powerful people cme to that platform than only common people will use it

West has dominated social media world for a long time. Still China was able to come up with Tik Tok that basically took over in a big way. The room for innovation is wide open, especially with the effects of social media on mental health. Indian entrepreneurs could definitely throw up something unique unlike Koo.

@@arbjful that's what he said
Koo shouldn't have copied Twitter's design. It should have had it's own unique look and design.
Exactly, they’re not innovative but they are good in copying and duplicating! And that’s why it failed!
Agreed
@@rumi9074 all indian services copy western design, top level execs dont want to "waste" money in design. to make it worse, our designers lack a scientific mindset so all know is to tweak design systems developed elsewhere.
on the flip side, indian users are not tech savvy, their approach towards any new design is that of discomfort. indians are forced to learn platforms that are made popular outside india, we like being followers.
India tried Hard to Copy from China..but Failed Miserably...😂😂😂😂😂

It even looks like twitter , like a knock off .
Looks like India is in its copying phase, just like China was decades ago.
that's the business philosophy of indians (asians in general). create cheap copies of the west and dismiss everything that does not come with a western stamp of approval.
The point of koo was a replacement for twitter. so what are you expecting?
Failed product not because the concept was wrong but the process was completely wrong
Sad to know this.Thank you Palki for this news. Very happy to hear you presenting the news .Was not aware of Koo.
I have installed koo and it made me register multiple times. They need better product and service. And make revenue model. Investeor should see clear growth and revenue future.
Nobody liked it even in India
These potential investors got scared of Indian political and business environment and Indian government which has unpredictable policies towards social media apps. When they shut down TikTok which is a promising challenger to western dominance, they did not consider the profound negative impact in the long run to future investment. The government is short sighted and the business is paying the price. That’s why Koo couldn’t get buyers.
Exactly. I could've respected India if it had ban Twitter and Facebook as well.
TikTok was banned because its a Chinese app - LOT more dangerous than western apps (as per the gov). That should not have any bearing on the investment into Indian owned app
Tik tok is destroying the youths , even in many western countries know this as well. Still your poor govt can't ban tik tok.
Our govt did and we are proud of this.
Tik tok was and is super level of shtyyness
@@RachaelWill Do you know that it is legal to post pornographic materials on Twitter? Tik Tok don't allow that.

Modi is solely responsible for this.
He constantly promoted Twitter never KOO.
UPI's success stems from its originality and not being just a copy of an existing system. Human psychology tends to favor familiar experiences, so being a market pioneer is crucial. In contrast, Koo was essentially a clone of Twitter, right down to the logo, offering nothing new or uniquely tailored for Indian users. This lack of innovation and differentiation led to its failure.
Even 🇳🇬's government switched to koo after they had issues with twitter (the former name of x).
Had it been Chinese Gov, they would have baned Twitter and helped Koo raise. It's as much failure on Founders parts as it is on Government. Indian government should support home grown social media. We r 140 cr afterall.
Tatas , relience, birlas or adanis should have bought this.
why? they are businessmen who know even college students can create a copy of twitter and become their competitors. its a lossy business since indians wont pay for subscription.

nothing new. Most Indian startups fail within first 5 years.
Reason being poor management, money focused business & lack of R&D
why couldn't Indian billionaires rescue koo....India like China has the numbers to have its socials..but it doesnt....but why
In India, we prefer digital colonizations than the Indian companies like Reliance. Plus, we do not have many people in the private sector.
Shutting down of Koo is a lost opportunity for India. Who will once again risk their time, energy and money to come out with another such app? I wonder why could they not approach Indian financiers like Reliance?
Why am i hearing this platform for the very first time?
The crap things never run for long!! who cares and What the hell is Koo ?

Its the idea that reaps victory, not a copy. Koo must have searched true indian talents and few western infrastructure. The idea failed.
Koo was just an oppurtinistic attempt. Just look at the logo.
The product need Palki to be the ambassador, surely will be a complete success. Maybe able to replace X. It is a simple solution.
Didn’t even know what Koo was. Lack of advertisement.
India needs policies similar to China to eliminate foreign dominance in this space in national interest.
They r one of the unsuccessful entrepreneurs on earth....
i just tried the ios app and it is not working 😢 means it is down
Koo never improved it's quality.
The government can create a fund to support such companies like Koo. Otherwise many will rise and fall.
I think Koo can think differntly on what is iffering in identical platforms . Anand Mahiindra like people can make it functional.
No surprise it was bound to happen
It was merely a Rival to x........it was just a knock off
Told you..Two reasons why it failed,One,it is a copy..
Second too much tax cut from the app Store and the government
Well well there is something to be learned from China.
Twenty-five years ago, India was seen as the rising power in IT, while China was the industrial powerhouse...
Now China has become an IT powerhouse as well... while we've... regressed.
Koo should have pivoted to Enterprise messaging - They have the tech, they just need to repack it.

There is no privacy in Indian apps
$60million(Rs500crore) is not small amount. Start up founder takes huge money rather than building company. Twitter founder working without salary and keeping expenses low to survive. Indian start up once they get funding then burning cash goes exponentially
I still hope that KOO would be rescued 🙏
If we can fund Ram mandir then we should be able to find this app too. This will not happen though because of the wasted interests of the big domestic organisations and politicians. And, if it is run and seen as a business then it should be able to generate revenues to survive. Not sure if this is strategically placed or just a business.
But the Ram Mandir is _already_ deteriorating and leaking and they couldn't fix it. Another HUGE blunder and failure.
UPI is inderctly promoted by government, but social media has different case, it is the public and influencers who make social media popular and moving.
If they build social media apps like what's app, facebook, instagram in India, it will work because through these apps we connect with ours locals and indians. But from tweeter we connect with the world.😢
Investment to be considered as strategic in such areas.

1. Chinese apps work in China because the govt there shuts down foreign apps. Indian govt allows everything from outside. 2. Indian apps lack originality and tend to just copy and react. To succeed, they need to be actively creative.

I understand the need for the investment for such things to better the national economy, however, I think there needs more journalism on what truly happened. I mean, I would like to know how such a highly acclaimed start-up lost cash. What were its founders and owners like? How did they manage it? How did they earn money? These questions need to be answered. You cannot expect investors to invest in something based on nationalism. It is unwise to tell Indians to invest like this. I think, though, that it is wise to tell Indians on how better to look out for companies with better prospects which usually should take a whole documentary tbh but I always go out for the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham.
