Yes, I do know a better way to stuff the cord into the slot. Well, sort of... This was the most entertaining of your videos for me because I had already been through all of the same frustrations months ago when I bought this puzzle. You managed to solve it in about a quarter of the time it took me. Anyway, to the point; the first time I tried to stuff the cord into the slot I fussed with it for a long time and even resorted to a pair of tweezers in order to make it happen. However, after solving it a few times I found I could quickly and reliably manage it with only my fingers. The strategy requires rolling the cord between your fingers as you push in. It is a delicate combination of fine motions that just takes a few tries to master. When I first solved it I had the same opinion of the puzzle. I think I was just feeling spiteful that it had tricked me so very badly. But after some time passed, I came around and now I think it is brilliant. It's really hard to find good deception puzzles that pose a real challenge. Most of these types of puzzles rely on some cheesy gimmick, like a simple spin or slap, which don't always leave you feeling like you got your money's worth. This one really forces you to think outside the box, literally. Anyway, I love this channel and look forward to more puzzle videos. Thank you.

Actually rolling the thread is common when trying to get string through a needle eye in sewing.
I work on small engines and seen the solution from the beginning. Look up " How to replace a Weedeater pull cord " or tighten a Weedeater pull cord.
is there a magnet in the string some where to help get it through the hole with the other magnet in the bead
I love this puzzle!! I would have liked to have been a "fly on the wall" at your home while you were trying to work this one out!!! Pacing back and forth, talking to yourself, thinking out loud...lol. You were really frustrated.
In the beginning you thought it was a 3 but you were so frustrated you never gave it a final number. According to your ranking system it would be a 4 to 4 1/2....LOL

If you put the chord through the holes as you did at 9:51 you can unwind the internal loop, freeing the rope from beneath the bridge - that leaves you wrapped around above, but you can then unwind that and free yourself from above, too.

Yeah no need to go in from underneath unless there isn't enough cord to wrap around the outside, would remove the fiddlyness and he almost had it >
This is the correct solution. you get a special kind of know that can be untangled from the outside
Wouldn't you just end up wound round the axle twice? Once under the bridge, once through the holes in the top.
Putting a loop in from the top like that is conceptually no different than just taking an entirely separate piece of string and feeding it in that way. You won't be affecting the loop that goes in under the bridge at all.
I would like to see this again with this solution
If you do that, then the rope ends up in the following situation: it goes into the hole at the top, wrap around the shaft once, come out of the hole at the top again, the go into the hole at the front, and wrap around the shaft again. That is, you will not be able to pull it out; it will be wrapped around the wood between the top hole and the front hole.
I figured it out just a few seconds before you did. Your pondering how to put it in place helped a lot.

It's a very nice looking puzzle. . .well made. I guess the manufacturer thought it was too easy to solve, so they put numbers on the dial as a distraction.
Very clever puzzle, but I probably wouldn't enjoy it.
In a sense the lack of possibilities kind of forces you to the solution, but, like you, Mr. Puzzle, I would have gotten frustrated with it.

It’s a nice box however I think for most people this puzzle would be too difficult. You had to figure out it’s assembly to solve it. Your a engineer which is a huge advantage-which is why your Mr.Puzzle!

Oh my, thank you for this video. I own this puzzle since summer and could not get it open. Especially because mine seems to be assembled in the wrong way. The loop on yours goes simply around the shaft. On my box it is also crossed between the Aluminium pin and the shaft once the pin is pointing towards you. I‘m not sure if it is possible to open this one. At least I figured out the mechanism in general. I also tried building a model out of LEGO to learn about the mechanism and tried a horrendous amount of possibilities. Man, you made my day. I went crazy on this one.
You can pull the pin up and detangle the cord. Then it will be straight and you can progress as described.
That makes me think that my hypothetical solution may be correct. It reminds me of an old Chinese puzzle where you would make loops and move loops through each other in a way that would leave the rope still connected to the dial, but the ball would be on the other side of that wall, so then you could just pull the rope through that wall and open the lid. However, idk if the rope and holes are large enough. Especially the hole in the ball - that may need to be larger for my idea to work. Because, now that I think of it, I think the Chinese trick is one where you need to remove a ring; so maybe it wouldn't work. Lol, idk.
Mr.Puzzle I tried to untangle it by pushing it under the pin. It is just too tight. That makes me wonder how it’s put together. Maybe this is a much more complex solution than yours. Sadly I cannot post a picture here....

Every time I see a cord on a puzzle I think of the loop around. EVER TIME! It is an ancient trick but since it is so time consuming a good one for securing a box!
Perhaps the pin can be used to push the cord through the outer notch? Etther by pulling it up while aligned with the notch and cord, or by pushing it in at the right place to activate a rocker lever below that has a pusher pin below the notch.

Maybe some part of the rope is magnetic so you can use the magnet on the ball to pull the rope through the hole.

@@ActionHeinz eeehhhh I don't think so, red herrings can be funny, I don't really like this one cause it feels like it must be useful, but if you are able to make something that FOR SURE is not gonna be useful to the solution, but the person doing the puzzle is so confused they might even try it a couple of times, I think that's a success, cause when you actually figure out the real solution you go "oh my god, I cant believe I tried that OBVIOUS red herring"
Hi, I have had this puzzle for a while and the solution you found is the right solution, there are no other. I was a little disappointed how easy it was and how I almost destroy the rope. Great video as always.

I have this puzzle too, and have the same feelings about the solution, i ended up twisting the string to make it curl upwards.
I also managed to get the string only around the pin, then pulling the string under the pin and out, but it did not feel like the correct solution
If that is the real answer, then there is an awful amount of unnecessary details. I think the magnet is just to affix the cord to the box so it doesn't swirl around everywhere when it's transported. But there is also the numbers on the lock, I really thought you have to make out some combination to untangle it. Could be there just to mislead people, but that makes the real solution kind of disappointing when you think it's more complicated. The pin seems kind of hard to pull out, too. Overall I think I prefer other puzzles over this one.
This is one of those puzzles that really deserves a tear-down. It seems very simple, but there's just a couple details I'd like to see inside the mechanism that would really make it clear if there's a better solution. From what I can see though, I'm not sure there is, or I'm just not clever enough to understand it. 😔

Hey there Mr. Puzzle, I don't usually comment but I felt compelled to leave a few words. Life is rough right now, but I find momentary solice watching and sometimes just listening to your content. Please just keeping being yourself and doing what you're doing - these videos about puzzling does wonders for folks like me.
Have you tried 'escape rooms' or anything of that sort? Does it interest you?
Just a thought... Check out Chris Ramsay, if you haven't already. He's pretty freaking all-around awesome and comments on his videos are the way I found out about Mr. Puzzle. He LOVES puzzles and escapes rooms, in addition, to being a magician and having a stellar playing card collection (as well as recently-ish launching his own) and ever-improving cardistry skills. It's also hilariously awesome when he challenges his friends (some magicians and two who actually own an escape room company that can not only customize it for the client, according to a theme, skill, etc., but they can actually provide the full experience delivered to your home!!! (They made a few fantastic videos of these and it's hilarious to see the kinda smirky game creator taunting and pushing Chris and friends to finish the escape room in time, and turned into a mess when trying to be there fastest to solve @ Level 1-2 puzzles... With money on the line!!!?)
There's such a wide range on his channel and I REALLY hope you are able to connect to something in at least some of them. Watching him helps me out a whole lot, especially when my life is a never-ending cycle of illness and the extreme anxieties around it and because of it. I'm glad you're able to find at least momentary solace in videos like these and I really hope life starts getting better for you. 💜
I am not really good at cord puzzles but I think maybe you can do some loop around the outside round mechanism and then tried to insert the cord from above? Also the magnet intrigues me...
Aside from Titan, I think this is the second most challenging puzzle for Mr. Puzzle, no? This one took him a solid 56 minutes to solve!
First time I solved the puzzle before Mr Puzzle
I think the puzzle is great, I had a feeling it was wrapped around that centre somehow, but hadn't realised you could get it out 8f that small hole at first. I'd buy it. Better quality rope needed, and a slightly larger hole so it's easier to get to, therefore using tweezers doesnt damage it.
I have to wonder if there will ever be a puzzle that breaks the difficulty ranking and is ranked higher than five by Mr Puzzle.

Am thinking of instead of pulling the robe you push it inside to loose it from where it's tied and then play with the spining lock and this is a part of the solution i should have one to examine the next step if it worked in the first place. I'll keep watching though

At 14:32 in to the video i worked it out . I think you pull a loop out the hole when the hole on the centre dial is at its bigest. Turn the dial so one end of the loop coming out the hole is in the fixxed half. The other halk is in the rotating half. It wil then deloop around the centre pin and vola done. I will recoment if i was correct as i stopped the video at 14;32

I'm not sure, but I wonder if you could remove the ball by moving the ball up and over the wall and through some loops like that old Chinese puzzle. Well, not remove the ball, but move it to the other side so you can pull the rope through that front wall, leaving the ball on the dial side with the rope still attached to the dial.
Well reasoned on the solution... but I would be willing to bet there is another way to do it... but I am not sure if it would work or not without the puzzle in front of me... but I think you can do something similar without bringing the cord out of the small hole... it all depends on the metal stick and how far up you can pull it.... Atleast that is what I think... maybe... tabun.
Stuff one line down into the hole from the top, lift the pin and turn it. Make sure to lift the pin over the other side of the string upon turning and once you've made a full 360 turn, the string should be loose from the center bolt.
Actually, disregard. This played out a lot better in my head and I'm not sure it would have worked.
There was a point when you started to wind the string around inside and perhaps if you had continued until all the string was wound inside. This could raise the central circle and perhaps you can then unscrew this circle. This was the only thing that I could see that you did not try.
Can I give a shout out for your video skills as well as your puzzle skills, the spoiler break bit showcasing the puzzle looks really classy every time.
I have no idea how you figure these puzzles out. I'd be lost forever lol

If you wind it up, the end of the rope will be pressed against itself right under the hole, where you can pull it out more easily. It's even possible that this will feed it through the hole itself, however you may have to do some pushing on the rope to get it to feed properly.
Maybe the magnet gets you a tool somehow to pull the loop upwards?
I've got the solution right at around 8:24. This is the basic trick that is used in disentanglement puzzles - you need to pull the rope over the obstacle. So I think the difficulty is OK, but the fiddling is too much, I agree.
Good puzzle, one thing that could have helped is a veneer-covered plate to rise the rope would be nice...
Let me explain, as it's simpler to understand in drawing... What I was thinking is if there was a steel finger that would interact with the pope's magnet, it could act like a finger to help guide the rope through the hole.
However, a pin might pierce the rope, and a staple might be too obvious visually. However, making a staple from two pins and a plate would allow you to sink this aid into the wood and hide the solution by covering the metal in a wood veneer to match the lid.
With thay in place, all one would need to do is rest one length of rope under the hole, as normal, but then use the rope's magnet to raise it through the hole.

I found that if you put the box in an hydraulic press it will magically open. Burning it works great tho but it might damage the contents.
I think it's partly how sewing machines work.

I agree with your opinions Mr Puzzle. I was a little disappointed that you didn't draw or recreate the inside of the lock though. That would have made it a lot clearer, rather than explaining it in words.
Maybe the rope needs a tiny ball bearing glued inside it with a very strong magnet so you could move the rope to have the bearing in the hole then use the magnet to pull the rope out

I thought that was great! Clever difficult to understand. Having an extra red herring or two with the magnet could've made it a little better.

I thought the solution was imaginative and clever. For me, if the solution is too easy, it is no fun. This puzzle wasn’t just about a sequence of moves it also requires you to work out how it works to solve it. I like that.
By the way, is there a section of the rope that is magnetic in any way? That would enable you to use the magnet to pull the rope up through the slot or hole. Just a thought.

So I thought also that that maybe the rope was magnetic but you said it is not. I feel like there was many false ideas with all the magnets. It would have been really cool to incorporate the magnets to the puzzle. However, as a box to hide some type of valuable with only you knowing the solution that can be cool. All that said I agree with your disappointment in that it was kind of a let down on the solution. It has a lot of potential to be a cool puzzle that they missed. Even putting the numbers on the dial makes it a little to much for all the false ideas. Still a a great video and beautiful puzzle. Love your videos I look forward to more every day. I lie the red haring in this puzzle. I agree with the effort to get the string through adds to the frustration. With that said, I think the puzzle as shown is almost very good.
I could see a lot of people just giving up after 2 hours and no progress. Way to fiddly to be an accurate solution and a repeatable one. I also doubt people would even bother putting it back in the starting position

Is the magnet to pull out a hook/tweezers from the box somewhere? Seems irresponsible for them not to have some kind of tool already incorporated in the box...why else is there a magnet?
To mislead. Look at the screws on the sides. They are magnetic, but are only there to mislead the puzzler to think magnets has a use.

@@Nords555 I worry about something else, the rope has a tendency to get squashed and deformed, eventually it'll be impossible to solve this puzzle, because the material will be too deformed to fit inside the small holes. If it isn't reinforced with steel thread, it's a fatal flaw
It's called a red herring. This puzzle has several of that and it's a large part of what makes it so great.

The principle of how this works isn't too different from how a sewing machine works. The bobbin that goes in underneath goes through a similar motion to braid one thread around the other.

I like the puzzle mechanism but to achieve the 'starting position' to solve the puzzle is the issue with too much fiddling about.
Whas there no hidden thread on the black ball so you could just unscrew it and take the cord out of the ball, releasing the lock?

I'm just watching this today for the first time, and it occurred to me that given the solution to this puzzle box, a nylon cord of that type isn't likely to last very long, especially if one needs to use tweezers to access it. It will become frayed and broken in a relatively short amount of time. It doesn't seem that the designers of this puzzle thought this solution all the way through.
Do you think the solution would be acceptable if there was simply more space between the dial and the latch, so that it'd just be more convenient to do the finger maneuvers necessary to pull this off?

Yes, that's the correct way, imo. But man, you need a tone on experience with string and knot puzzles, in order to solve it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you did it pretty fast, it would take us days, maybe... Coz we would be so focused on unscrewing that thing and getting that round piece off, to release the rope........................ :)))))))) :((

I think you missed or shortcut-ed a step that would have made the solution make more sense. I do not believe this was the correct solution to the puzzle. If it was, it's a poor design by the puzzle maker.
