Suggest you go ahead and install an overflow/drainage pipe system while working on the dam. Pretty easy to do with plastic pipe. You can likely source design ideas from a state university or department of conservation. Some are more complex than others. A simple approach should work for you. I also suggest a bottom draw system as that will remove poorly oxygenated water from the bottom rather than the "better" water from the top of the pond. Especially if you plan to have fish in it. Good luck whatever approach you take.
