Asgore is best boi in Undertale. He killed 6 children in order to free his people not for self-addictive purposes. He suffered alone for years (only Undyne was occasionally with him) and was then deviously murdered by his son. All he had to endure, what he had to give up, what he had to take was then for nothing. Toriel could at least have put him back on the right path but she was too fine for that. All hope and dreams were destroyed by flowey and toriel. That's why flowey deserved the final dead

If asriel and chara had to decide with whom they live, Chara would probably rather live with asgore as both have a pretty strong aversion to humans. At asriel I'm not sure because he always sees the good in everything and wants to avoid violence

To be honest asgore deserves to be king and not he deserves to be king because when his two kids dies he wanted vengence which allowed him to take souls but because he did not go through the barriet after getting 1 soul to get 6 it did take awhile but he did not truly wanted to kill you he hesitates to kill you by making sure you did everything you wanted to do and he gave hope to his kingdom in the era of despair that would have came after the 2 kids of theirs died while toriel abandoned her throne when the underground will be chaotic after all that
Edit: and he is also carrying all the guilt and burden mostly by himself if you do not count the royal guards
Why would toriel be surprised that asgore is fighting a human when she was angry at him she's not angry at him for existing she's angry at him for killing children.
