- This week, we break down the ins and outs of the @oldbloodnoise Beam Splitter, an overdrive so versatile that it has 13, count 'em, 13 separate knobs. If you've been searching for a drive pedal that provides hard-clipping distortion, soft to hard-clipping overdrive AND a transistor overdrive, look no further.

I'm not wearing headphones. I don't want to know how good it is.
because you'll buy it if you do?
Guilty
You make us do weird things for money@@jhspedals
They can't make me
Spoiler. It is pretty good.
I like this format... it really doesn't feel like a product demo demo and more like a friend of mine is showing me this cool new gear he got hold of. Mind you, I want one now, but I can assure you that that's not your fault. 🙂
Production is amazing!! JHS killing it as always
they keep us alive for sure
thank you!!!
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how talented Nick is as a musician
the point of jhs show cases is there is a lot of musicality... there are music in there not only pedal sounds! beautiful S2
Only if we can ALSO appreciate how deliriously kissable the woman on the left is (dunno her name yet, but I'm gunna find it after this reply!) -hot DAMN, she's a cutie so easy on the eyes. :D
@@igortakesabride1139bro what the sam hell are you saying
True.
@@igortakesabride1139she’s a Mississippi 4/10
You two are priceless. Josh is lucky to have you.
♥️
Gotta love old blood these guys are killing it. Loved the alpha haunt and the dark star. Been using the old blood side mostly on the mood pedal even that is killer I love how much inspiration you get with there pedals.
Excellent video! Probably my favorite Belle and Nick vid yet!
Headphones yes! Wow, crazy good. So many cool setting choices. Happy Friday Nic n Bell
I love how you put the effect on the vocal mics now and then - yes, I was using headphones.
My old PDS 20/20 kinda does half of this stuff.
The Dream looks pretty cool for stereo too.
Thanks for the demo, guys!
Killer Production, guys!
I gotta say, this is rapidly becoming one of my favorite channels, not just for the solid pedal info and content, but also because I've discovered so much GREAT music through "Record Time." If "Record Time" had its own account or playlist (or podcast) I'd listen and watch CONSTANTLY.
Just got hold of one! So excited to start experimenting with it!
awesome job guys!
Thanks to JHS pedals I have, after playing guitar for forty years, finally decided to try making a pedalboard setup. This has turned me into a pedal addict almost overnight and I hold you guys personally responsible. Lol It started with two or three pedals which quickly turned into four or five. I only put on the brakes when I ran out of spendable money. I have seven pedals now and it's absolutely fun playing around with them. Love the channel!
I had to keep it cheap so here's my rig if anyone's curious:
Moskey Silver Horse
Caline Pure Sky
Joyo American
Mooer Yellow Compressor
Aroma ADL-1 Delay
Joyo Classic Flanger
Behringer Ultra Chorus
And all that goes into my Line 6 Pod XT where I add whatever else I want. I also have a cool Hotone Heart Attack Legacy Nano I can throw in there. New to this so feel free to let me know what you guys think.
Stay groovy 👍
yes!! this is awesome!
@@jhspedals Thanks! Hope to grab a JHS pedal soon. 🙂
I've been searching distortion and overdrive pedals to put my TB303 clone into and you described the concept from a musical perspective . Well I understood it anyway so nice choice of words. I used to use a RAT because there were 10 at every pawn shop and gear in Detroit was limited anyway, but what a bone crusher. The Beam Splitter has a bigger range and doesn't break up the sound like other pedals. It might be a little messy to use when dj'ing, never used something with more than 3 knobs, but it gives me 2 parts of the golden trio I like - reverb, delay, distortion. Now I'm convinced to get this one and give it a try, big thanks going out to you guys.
I want to go back in time and convince Kurt that, if nothing else, he should live to see the Beam Splitter. 😢
Stunning video and presentation.
The pedal is almost as cool as the video.
I really been wanting to hear how this pedal is used. Sounds like you nailed it..
Wow, it is even relatively affordable here in Europe. Sure still have to feed my pets to my kids again, but considering what it does it will actuwarly (that's how you spell it. Werdz aint hard) save money I would spend on other stuff to get this sound. Thanks OBNE and JHS!
hilarious comment
Frankly, you'd have more luck feeding the kids to the pets. Kids are way pickier.
I dig how you subtly changed up the audio for the “vocals” to coincide with the pedals demo. Nice
Wow! This pedal is awesome!
Also: I love that they credit the artists for each pedal!
The old blood noise endeavors Alpha Haunt v2 is my favorite fuzz EVER. I don't even bother looking at other fuzz pedals. When OBNE seeks to make something, I feel like they always do it to the conceptual conclusion. They leave no stone unturned. Individual outputs for each section, three different types of overdrive, individual delay for each section, summed output running everything in parallel for mono, modulation control, full volume, gain, and tone for each section.
The stuff they make is so dang cool. It's like, when OBNE makes something, they do the hell outta it to the point where they only need to make one. You want an overdrive? The Fault is gonna do just about everything any other overdrive will do. Two gain stages, transparent, high gain, low gain, EQ, everything. You want a fuzz? The Alpha Haunt will do everything from Velcro, to tone bender, to fuzz face, to gated big muffs, to light, grainy overdrive. They've got all sorts of different interesting utility pedals too to help incorporate different channels, expression sliders, EQ, stereo XY, a/b. Old Blood Noise Endeavors are so awesome man. My dream pedal would probably be an OBNE parametric EQ with shelving options for bass and treble. I'm sure if they ever did one, it'd be perfect. And probably include some other stuff that I couldn't even think of that'd actually be super practical and useful
Fun video. This pedal is ten steps above the TC Electronic Mimic. Harvest Moon is awesome!
Veeeerrrrryyyyy interesting! Now I am dreaming about how this could sound coming out from a bunch of amps 😊 Sweet!
And thanks for always making me laugh, guys 🫂
Kind of a perfect pedal for a three piece that wants/needs a bigger live sound.
Definitely needs more knobs.
I just learned Harvest Moon and I really absolutely enjoyed this experience of a video. Headphones and all.... Thank you, I want to do a stereo chain between a twin reverb and a blues deluxe 410
love u guys
This pedal seems awesome! 🎉🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wolly Ishmael, this sounds awesome!
That riff thing around 6:05 is insanely cool
This one hits my third ear just right.
I wish it summed to stereo as well as mono, because that way it would retain its LCR 'trereo' field but be a lot more useful in plugging into other things.
it does. any output left unused gets sent to the main output. so if you use only the first two outputs you'll get the blue + purple channels summed together on the left, and the green channel on the right.
I want to see Doc Ock playing three guitars all somehow going through the Beam Splitter and into an EQD Tentacle. Please make that happen.
It’d be awesome to have the delay features of this combined with the filter controls of the Empress Multidrive.
got one here, & persuaded my guitarist to get one on spec. I'd been kicking the idea around for a while & tried to build something similar in a mod-dwarf, using the incoming note to generate a sampled-&-held random value for the delays.
I love the idea of rolling off the guitar level to clean up the fuzz channel- as a bassist, it was too buzzy for me, so that's got my third channel back.
where they have missed a trick, for me, is in not making the auxiliary outputs on stereo jacks, so that you can use them send-&-return & summed onto the main output. this would overcome its lack of individual channel switches & allow you to insert other effects. imagine a looper on full wet on an insert. you play a line & what seems to be a different guitar plays it back at you a bar later. that sort of thing. octavers. harmonisers.
I'm going to have a look in mine, see if a retrofit is possible. I know my guitarist doesn't want to lug a mixer around to achieve this sort of use.
I’m dead watching this y’all are hilarious “Trereo” word wizard or the day!!
Like the red nail polish Josh!
Trereo is a nice idea. It would be great to have trereo Chorus and Flange… the possibilities are endless!
I was hoping for tight Dimebag doubling effect ... got weirdo shoegaze. Alright I'll take it! 🤣
Looks useful for when you are just one guitar player in a band, either through 1 or 2 or even 3 amps, to simulate there are two (or three) guitars live. I have heard of people with a similar idea, splitting the guitar signal through different distortions (or recording just one track and copying it) and the secondary one with some delay or something, exactly with the same intention of this pedal of giving it the feeling of being more than 1 guitar or track. So this sums that idea in 1 device.
You can do it in multi effects that have splitting. I've got a Boss GT1000 and usually use multiple amp models to make my sound more rich, but slap a delay in front with 100%, 0% dry, no feedback and a 6ish ms delay and it sounds immense.
@@Handles_are_garbage Thanks I will try it.
Billy Thorpe Children of the Sun. Nails it.
I definitely heard the Neil tone. And l picked up a Guided by Voices vibe as well.
This feels like a public service announcement and I like it!
I dont need more pedals, i dont need more pedals, I don't need more pedals...
You need more pedals
Thanks for this, very helpful. Can I run this in stereo with 2 amps? Apologies, if I missed it.
Trereo is amazing. Great video you all!
I would run a stereo wet/mono dry setup, then run the stereo signals from my pedalboards(one being my All JHS board😉)into my Ableton for some Cut 'n' Sample Shenanigans.
OMG, that coffee machine has a built in clock and night-light!
Love that Gina from Brooklyn 99 is doing these gear reviews now.
Monoreo sounds just as fantastic as Trereo!😮
I'm a little scared of this pedal because I feel like I need to play something really good with a strong idea to deserve being that wide. Hope one day to have the confidence for this.
Good god i can imagine the possibilities of using the two stereo outs to go into amps while having the dry signal go into my SIMPLIFIER D/I going out of monitors with my current petalboard setup… SUPER STEREO 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Korg A5 does this exact thing except it is 25ish years old. Some of those floor multi-effects things were actually good.
It let you adjust the timing of effects?
This reminds me of like a polyphonic EHX Analogizer (what makes it cool is the “spread” or micro delay pot)
Now if only they could build this but with dozens of drives so you could *almost* get to Siamese Dream levels of wall of guitar. (Depending on who remembers what, the track Soma might have 40 guitar tracks layered on top of each other. Billy Corgan kind of lost his mind recording that album…)
I bought this with the intention of stacking it with an OP amp big muff
Just have to buy twelve! Seriously though. Siamese Dream was my first thought.
Hey yalll !!! ❤
I like “sleeps with angels”. underrated
Hello, just wondering if you could explain how pedals stack up against all the rack mounted equipment that rock stars are using?
I knew it was gonna be good based on the name. Nothing beats a good beam splitter.
This now makes me want a stereo fuzz.
When you use the mono output they're still in parallel though right? There's no series / parallel switch as far as I understand it. They're either in parallel with separate outputs or their in parallel and summed to mono. Lemme know if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a way to run these overdrives in series, which is kind of a bummer.
Genuinely neato.
Oh My God!!!! I just realized you have never came out with the Pedal called Voice Tech.....
Addison would’ve loved this lol
RIP
Excellent demo. Nick, go listen to the Buffalo Springfield. Your welcome.
Trereo! Spell check is telling me it’s not a word. We need to inform them it is. 😁
Josh, is there a correlation between how good a pedal is and how cool it looks? I think there is. I find that if I think a pedal looks cool, it ends up being a favorite of mine. My Panther delay is one of my coolest pedals and one of my favorites. JHS pedals are much cooler looking than most other pedals I’ve seen.
The only thing that would make this cooler would be a blendable octave down on the purple section so you could simulate having a bass in the center of the "mix" if you're a guitarist in a situation without a bass player
Looks like you can send it to an octaver
So it’s kinda like a WDW rig in a pedal, just more lofi and with intentional timing differences to make the guitar feel multitracked. Cool.
very cool
Genius! is there a Plugin that achieves this effect?
First thought came to mind. This sounds pedal sounds like the intro to Working Man by Rush.
I like how it sounds a lot but it's not really a replacement for doubling guitar tracks in any way
I wore headphones...also Belle's Powerpuff Girls Hoodie is great.
Got mine this week. Time for sonic mayhem.
This could be used to do the Billy Thorpe "Children of the Sun" riff on steroids.
I´m waiting for V2.......
Expressionpedal input for modulation...........
That would be rad.
😁
There is an expression input for Deviate.
Does this go before or after the hm2?
Needs more knobs
This just makes me want my notaklon sooner... 14k.. come on February
Just a random question… have you guys ever done any reviews on Peavey Pedals for the 80’s/90’s?
not yet!
i am just going to get a full featured optical i don't have to kick....so well, it was an idea.
I wonder if the enclosure and colour are a nod to the ehx tri parallel mixer! Which can get you similar functionality (with other Pedals)
Nope. We’ve had our own Signal Blender since 2019. We just picked colors we like.
@@tylerhuskerson2823 and a lovely one at that!
JHS Team, great job. OBN Team, great job.
hey thanks!
When is the Yacht Jazz Tour happening?
I really want this pedal... I love weird overdrives but unfortunately I am not in a place to spend money on one... 😥
4:39 yeahhh
And if not this... which is cool.
Get a Boss LS-2, a couple of Delays, ODs and maybe some Mods...
But really, anyone with the remotest interest in parallel effects should have an LS-2, they're cheap too.
Rust Never Sleeps is the best Neil Young record followed by ‘After the Gold Rush’
That pedal is about to be rocket launch to the space of prices :v
uh yo... this is absolutely sick! I assume you gotta have a stereo rig to get the full effect of this then? But maybe not? Could you run it stereo out into the stereo in of a reverb pedal and then mono out? Might need to get one of these just to try this.
oh wait I just got towards the end where you talk about the main out haha
OK, I heard enough garage/ hardcore punk/grunge 💩 on here with these pedals. I'd like to hear more prog uses in a Gilmore/Holdsworth style
looks like as much fun as a Nashville strung extra, Harvest Moon...tasty.
i mean pedal switchers cost extra + take up space....there should be more pedals like what i am looking for here. ( previous comment, less compressor, more Q )
and by Basic Optical 2:1, i just mean use the output control to push into it ( more output = more compression ) ... and i know the country guys like the FET sound, but some of us don't want compressor coloration .... but that works out, because the country guy can run an always on FET, in addition, ( and then they don't sound over compressed when they hit the same boost )..and a "pop-less" foot switch..buffered, or anything to make it not pop......just like put an extra LED, for compression activity, and call it haunting mids + comp, or something.
You can definitely tell Belle is a Scott.
Headphones? Nah… played on the big TV through the full surround sound setup! 🎉
If you dont want to wear headphones just watch the video in landscape and put the middle of your phone up to your nose.
lol
I always think I know all the best pedals, then JHS uploads a new video...
5:27 sounds like cocteau twins
