The Duesy & the RR for me from the choices offered. When I was a kid my dad would take me to the classic auto show at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yr after yr & my favorite car quickly became the Duesenbergs... any Duesenberg!
Hi Jay. Wow! It's pretty amazing that this car has survived in such an original state! On the front door cards, they could be real leather or they could be leatherette - a fake leather based on cloth. You'd be more familiar with leatherette as the covering on 100+ year old books/bibles. As you note, it's cloth in the back. Cheers.
Note the tubular hydraulic shock absorbers. Back then most cars which had shocks used lever-type friction dampers which had to be pre-set to the road conditions you were on. And if the odomoter is correct, this has 52K miles on it, and the placard shown @21:02 says of the running gear only the tires, the leather shock covers, the radiator header tank, one piston ring and the paint on the block aren't original. That's phenomenal for a car of this age when nearly nothing was optimized yet and things tended to wear quickly. Also notice it is one of 6 remaining Limos and was guaranteed for life to the original owner.
WYR though this Simplex is superb in so many ways, I have to go with the Duesy because everyone knows it as the best. Next round goes to the Horch, one of the original "Auto Union" companies which the modern Audi corporation is based from.
Love seeing the period ads at the end, but I think I'll pass on crossing the seas on the Lusitania; I just got a bad feeling about being on her...
First 1916 White,, second 1916 Crane-Simplex, and throw in a Cunningham and Sayers & Scovill sedan (the last 2 made special order sedans as well as hearses and ambulances. Great find of a rare car.

I will take my 2002 Honda Civic EX with 197,000 miles. Positives: it's reliable and economical. Negatives: it's got an interference engine. My great grandad had a Dusenberg, but alas he had no money to leave to me.
Looks like the big SUV of its time. The Duesenberg looks like the best car.

@@What.its.like. there was one if not two at the Blackhawk museum in SF area about 25 years ago. I remember the radiator had a glass cover over an " IF ' for Isotta Fraschini, but the car is so oversized that it made one wonder IF it were real.
This one required a deep dig and you were great at articulating the history. Much appreciated, especially since my last name is Crane. 😏

1916 Locomobile, the body styling looks the best. The Simplex is alright, but that body style always looked "crane" like. It's probably a bit overpriced, and I wonder how it would look if it were restored?

Awesome episode. I love seeing very old original cars. The cylinder cocks on the engine of this one are really cool. I'd choose the 1916 Duesenberg and the 1916 Rolls Royce, although the Locomobile and Horch are close seconds.
Have you been to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland? I always enjoyed that place.

Only Jay Leno's garage channel features both one Crane Simplex and several Duesenberg cars restored to show level.
From the brands featured in what you rather Horch is a early version of Audi. All American brands are defunct, unfortunately. The Rolles Royce is still own by BMW.
Isota Frascini is long gone unfortunately as a personal luxury car brand, today producing engines.
I plan on covering Bugattis I would love to cover at least one Dusenberg by the end of the year I was gonna wait until the base got bigger to start going after some of these heavy hitters.. =) the goal is to at least cover one car from every automotive manufacture in America happy you enjoyed this episode great choices
@@What.its.like. When it comes to luxury cars in that time, to me, the most obscure brand is the most interesting - Locomobile which managed to be bankrupt thank to Durant nearsightedness.
I watched your episode with Rickenbacker. It is interesting to note that all luxury key design points in the body of Rickenbacker in 1926 were already implemented in 1916 in wood in Crane Simplex.
To me it exemplifies how luxury copies clues from ultraluxury.
Another great video.Jay. So 3 questions: In your opinion was the higher price justified? Why was Simple better than any thing else? I am not seeing it. Ok question 3 what in the world was that car next to it with the pipes sticking out of the cowl and the things sticking up out of the roof?
That is a custom car. The guy built a pipe organ into a car. I will cover that eventually it’s a one of one car.
This was the most expensive car America made before the Duesenberg. I don’t know if the price was justified just like the Duesenberg really I don’t know if that price was justified don’t get me wrong. Duesenberg are really cool but you’re buying the engine 1st and foremost I’ve heard that driving them can be a bit of a chore because they handle like a truck. Packard had a synchromesh transmission. They even had a four-speed synchromesh transmission. Duesenberg didn’t have that… but getting back to the crane simplex idk 🤷♂️ to be honest I’m more versed in 30s and 50s cars but I love looking at the oddball cars. There’s a lot of innovation in the teens that just kind of went by the wayside lost technology.

That said when you compare the styling and size of the Simplex compared to say any other 1916 car at the time it is quite I remarkable car. Keep doing episodes on early cars. The brass era cars are my fav's but they are a handful to drive and to get stopped
