How ROUGH is it? Not just the Westernmost Point of Australia! EPIC Adventure in our Unimog (Eps.14)

  • This week we take you on an adventure to Steep Point, the most westerly point of Mainland Australia! Many people think it's where the sign is, but we take you to the actual westernmost point ;)
The roads in are very corrugated, some people even say they are the worst corrugations of Australia! To make the track more interesting, you have to cross a few sand dunes and most of them were pretty chopped up and bumpy, so you had to drive quite slow.
It is a beautiful drive with the scenery changing constantly. The main track takes you along the east side straight to the campgrounds and the sign, but in Pat and Jele style we obviously didn't stay on that track and decided to explore the western side first.
When you jump on WIKIcamps you can see a lot of Points of Interest, like blowholes, natures bridge and cathedral rocks. The drive along the cliffs is spectacular and the views are stunning! The track has a few washouts where you start leaning to one side and is super bumpy and rocky in other parts but all in all not too difficult!
We absolutely loved it and can only recommend not to miss out on the west coast after driving on all those corrugations to get out there anyways (if the stunning views over the cliffs aren't enough to persuade you the track here is much less corrugated, but also slower going)!
On the way back out our Unimog started to have some problems. We drove up one of those bumpy sand dunes and suddenly the engine guard and overheating alarm turned on. We jumped out to have a look and saw that the belt running the fan for the cooling system jumped off!!! Not ideal when you're in the middle of nowhere! We put it back on but the tensioner (which is quite a weird one) is too lose and it jumped off multiple times when the track got corrugated or bumpy.
Once we made it out of the dunes system we checked the belts again and TWO were gone! The fan belt and alternator belt! Patrick decided to go for a run and tried to find it while Jele stayed with the Mog. Two hours later, Patrick still wasn't back and Jele started to get really worried....
Watch the episode to find out why the other belt jumped off and what happened to Patrick...
Catch you all next Sunday again!!!!
PS: We are trying to travel mostly on dirt roads and tracks, which makes it even more adventurous!

Glad you got it sorted, we got rid of our big steel fan and all the belts and put an electric fan on, which works great. The floppy belt is terrible, and dangerous as well. There is no way to tighten it to the specification the belts need with that tensioner.
According to my workshop manual, the operating temp for the mog is 95C, if you are running normally 70-75C, that is too low, diesels need to run hot to get best fuel economy and minimal engine wear, if your radiator cap and hoses are in good condition, it would be fine at 100C. The thermostat we have is only fully open at 95C ( Make sure you have the OEM one, as some of the generic replacement have a lot smaller opening) . We drove 250km up the Birdsville track in over 50C, and engine was quite happy at 100-105C.

Yeah that tensioner is a nightmare.... thank goodness the belt hasn't come off since.
What temperature are you measuring? The block or coolant? We usually run around 80°C on a flat stretch and that will go up to to 90-95 when going uphill for a longer period of time. As for block temperature (we measure it with an engine guard) its usually around 90 to 95 after warming up. On really hot days it will get to 102 but that is the most we've seen.
By OEM do you mean Mahle Behr? We have the 71°C thermostat in there at the moment, when I swap it next I'll try the normal one.

@@PatandJele The Wahler ones are the ones to get - they are a bit bigger than the other makes. Don't get the Tridon one, it is quite a bit smaller than the other ones. I have Auberins temp sensors on the cylinder head, next to the OEM sensor and another on the return pipe back from the radiator to measure the temp drop across the radiator. The Tropical thermostat opens early, but doesn't close the bypass valve any earlier, so it behaves differently to the the standard 83C one. The tropical one is fully open at 85C and the 83C one is fully open at 95C. Sounds like yours is behaving normally.

Thank you we will let you know if it acts up again. So far it has held up with no further issues. How do you like the electric setup? Have you used it a lot?

I only installed it a few weeks back and haven't tested it yet im just about to put my box on the back of my truck so I still have about a year before I hit the road. I didnt like the look of all the belts and pulleys so I swapped it out while I was getting my radiator cleaned out. @@PatandJele
