Sound Like ZZ Top WITHOUT Busting the Bank - âą Sound Like ZZ Top | Wi...
Formed in 1969, ZZ Top have gone on to become one of the most influential rock bands of all time. With total worldwide album sales of over 50 million, the band's ongoing influence is also evidenced in modern streaming platforms such as Spotify, where they have almost 4.6 million monthly listeners, and 162 million streams on their top song, "La Grange". It's safe to say that the influence of ZZ top is deeply rooted within the very foundations of rock 'n' roll, and shows no evidence of going anywhere anytime soon.

That fuzz is thick. Like the irony of Frank Beard's name.
â@@jakobovski13 But he hasn't
@@jakobovski13 Not back in my time, you whippersnapper!
@@RemoteAbductionArm Added to the fact he played in a band where the other members are known for their substantial beard. Layers of irony.
So much irony I need a folic acid supplement to process it all.
@@ryanern18 I'm drinking a lot of vitamin b supplements right now. Like. A. Lot.
Wow, when La Grange kicked in on the strat... it was flawless. Superb job guys!!
So great!
What about sounding like Eric Johnson? Would love to see Bea play Cliffs of Dover :O
And do not forget the Duracell batteries for the pedals. Have to be Duracells.
Make this happen bea!
I'd rather hear Manhattan
+1
Thereâs a patch on the helix called âcliffs of Doverâ and if you plug a strat into it, it is a carbon copy of Eric Jâs tone
that laney in the background is just screaming for a Black Sabbath by busting
Yep....got me good acting like you dropped the LP lol felt for you for a second đ
đ my heart dropped
dude my stomach legit sank
Wouldnât be a great loss to the world đ€ headstock will fall off eventually anyway
Man I got way too scared for a guitar I don't own lol
I pooped a little
When Captain interviews some guitarist it would be interesting to hear how the original guitarist plays selected "without busting" equipment.
"Here we go, it sounds nothing like ZZ Top but it sounds awesome."
Great video guys!
Hah, yeah, it's pretty obvious that they're really just mostly picking gear they want to try. At least in the "busting the bank" series. Fair enough, though,
you're wrong, it sounds EXACTLY like ZZ Top, or maybe they used too much gain
this was WAY better than the without busting by far
I've heard that they have to intentionally screw up the riffs these days to avoid copyright takedowns under EU law.
are you deaf? of course it sounds like ZZ Top
I think CZcams will take the videos off as well if they are the exact same.
That LaGrange tone is leagues ahead of the "by not busting the bank" version. Both clean and crunch.
Sound like Lynryd Sknryd from the 70s era please! BY BUSTING
Yes please!!
Why? It would sound nothing like it, and your life would be no different afterwards.
We need more Sound Like episodes that involve the bass. You can only go so far with just the guitar. Adding the bass really takes it the extra level. You guys already do dual guitars a lot and you already add bass for context a lot. Why not just go all the way with the bass?
GuyNamedSean what about a whole band.
Yifan Zhang what about a full tour in support of each individual episode
Get a P-Bass, sound like everyone?
Whilst this is a cool idea, most bands they cover dont have a whole lot of diversity when it comes to bass equipment. Every episode would be "they use a p bass and an svt" or "we couldnt get all the special stuff they use in their rig." Imagine trying to do tool on a budget? not really gonna happen. I asked for this a couple years back but i quickly realised that all the tones you could need could be covered (on a budget) can be done with a fender rumble and a darkglass vintage od lmao
@@atamize J-Bass. When you want a P-Bass-esque tone, just roll off the bridge pickup volume. But you can't get a clanging slap tone without a bridge pickup on P-Bass.
IMHO J-Bass is more versatile.
I genuinely FELT the LP drop. It got me good! Felt like I needed therapy after that jump-cut hahah.
DUDE, SAME. IT GENUINELY MADE ME JUMP
Suggestions for some future Sounds Like
- Ghost Without Busting
- Primus Without Busting
- Stevie Ray Vaughan By Busting
- Megadeth Without Busting
- Metallica By Busting
- Mick Ronson Without Busting (For those who don't know, Ronson was David Bowie's original guitarist who played on albums like _The Man Who Sold the World,_ _Ziggy Stardust_ and _Aladdin Sane)_
- Chuck Berry Without Busting
- Smashing Pumpkins By Busting
Frank Beard ain't go no beard. No points off for grammar
This is kinda long but felt it would be helpful to someone looking for a Megadeth type of sound
The gear I used to get a nice Megadeth style sound was a
Marshall MG15CF Gain:7 Bass:10 Mid:8 Treb:10
Tube Screamer TS9 (Dave uses 808)
Drive:Off/9 oâclock Tone:Noon Level:3 oâclock/full.
And the guitar I got closest sound with was my Vintage V100 LP copy. I love that guitar. Great sound and feel for a copy. That may vary with each guitar so be cautious. But mine is great. I set my amp and Ts up that way just noodling and got very Mustaine vibes from it so I looked up Daveâs settings and thatâs a common setting he uses. Nicer amps and a ts808 or similar pedal will probably sound a little nicer but it sounded great with what I used. The most expensive part would probably be the v100 as they have different styles that vary in price. That got me a very similar sound to The System Has Failed. Sorry if this was too long but I just wanted to share it
This request might be close to Rabea's heart: Extreme/Nuno Bettencourt Without Busting the Bank (or BY busting, I'm easy to get along with).
I don't think they can get a signature Nuno Betancourt Washburn at Anderson's, that's why they don't do it
@@mamamelo2 Actually, I've seen videos where they have N4's in the store, but that may have been a while ago. Either way, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a comparable guitar (dual humbucker, ash body) that would get them in the ballpark :)
I asked him to did this at namm
Hell yeah, I wanna see him shred stuff like Play With Me or He-Man Woman Hater or whatever else
This sounds SO MUCH better than not busting the bank. So cool. Great job!
Yes it does, by some considerable margin. Maybe you should re-do the budget one??
one of these days they'll chose the Hendrix "Band Of Gypsys" fuzz face and actually use it lol
FootofaFerret, you play guitar?
Hickory McCay he does
Ah, yes. It's Gilly Biggins from Zed Zed Topp!
đ
That made me want to buy a goldfish, just so I could name him Gilly Bibbons.
TT Zop
You got me. Outside the States it would definitely be Zed Zed Top with Husty Dill.
Zed's dead
@@thealrightestguitarist9135 I am gonna do this.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. I'm in tonal withdrawal right now since my DSL is getting repaired but this is a phenomenal tone
The MXR La Machine is based on the Foxx Tone Machine, not the Octavia.
Also, Billy Gibbons was using a Bixonic Expandora rather than a fuzz for some time-the JHS Kilt is supposedly based on that circuit.
Can you do the cult, without or by I donât really care.
I concur. Gretsch and a Vox should do the trick
Yes, do the cult.
@@frankconcepcion6593 I reckon they should do a version each:
Matt Gretsh + Vox
Bea LP Custom + Blackstar ( I'm sure I read somewhere Duffy also uses Blackstar amps)
Every Boss delay they can get their hands on evenly distributed.
I was looking to get the Eliminator sound. you made my day, my week, my month !!!!!! so good. thx
You guys missed the biggest most important part of the rig ! The harness to spin the guitars !
Not so much a harness, more that both ends of the strap attach to a central straplock on the back of the body (requires modification)
Adam Goodall Iâve seen pictures of the setup. Yeah it was kinda like a strap lock on the back but they had a harness kinda thing that hung over their chest .
If I remember the old interview I read right it was a hard tail strat for the clean part of la grange and the he switched to pearly gates for the higher gain parts .
You guys knocked it out of the park with those tones and playing!!!! Ridiculously great classics tones, and the bonus octave-fuzz stuff was AMAZING!
Wow, that Strat sounded great playing La Grange. Fantastic playing by both of y'all
Again. It needs to be said how amazing these two are. Another great video M&R!
I had always thought La Grange was recorded on a Telecaster. I knew there was no effing way it was his Pearly Gates LP. But it being a Strat was mildly surprising. Or even a Gretsch would be possible. And the Strat you chose is a wet dream come true. So sexy and so gorgeous.
Missed a trick not using the mythos chupacabra. It is meant to sound like the first 3 albums. And it does!!!!
mickyp2006 yessir!!
You chaps were on a roll with the groove on La Grange. Bravo!
I just love watching the guys rock out, makes my day every time! Keep up the good work.
One of the best bands Iâve seen and some great renditions as always. Great stuff!
This time you nailed La Grange! I love this song, it's the first song I ever played (BADLY) on an electric guitar
Billy Gibbons plays .07s gauge strings, Donât forget
The light gauge thing started way back in the day, It was a result of him jamming with BB King who told him man you're working your fingers way too hard on those Ole heavy strings...
Light strings for better tone!
Yes, so many of those legendary guitarists used very light gauge strings .
@@Wyatt42069 They did get great tone but I wonder if those extremely light strings tended to go out of tune frequently ?
@@TheHumbuckerboy not really, i tried the 7s once and it was fine
Man, really enjoyed this episode. Good playing, good sound. Brilliant
good to see matt and bea sporting the beards for such a topical video
The crazy LP and the Strat sounded unreal. You absolutely nailed the tones. One of my favourite Sounds Like.
*Gilly Biggins* is a character of *LotR* đ
Loved the playing and the gear!
The La Grange sound was absolutely spot on
Some of the guys from ZZ TOP threw my auntâs 21st birthday party back in the 70âs. Think yâall did a bang up job on this one. Well picked rig.
that rig is immense! What a sound-straight up Rock and Roll!
Absolutely fantastic as usual, guys!
Sound like Crap by busting the bank :
Get the most expensive guitar.
Plug it into the dearest amplifier.
Let me do the playing.
There you have it.
Hey now don't say that about yourself. I bet you are better than Nick Jonas and Lil Wayne
Sean King Nick Jonas just had an off night in that vid heâs normally a decent player. Lil Wayne is trying. And if we judge him by shit heâs tried to be good at before (Skating) heâll be decent in 10 or so years.
Poizin Rath A) itâs a joke B) no one cares if lil Wayne will be good at guitar in 10 years.
oh yes! crap is my favorite band of all time
heart attack when he dropped the guitar jeez
3:21 I'm ashamed to say you got me. Heart genuinely skipped a beat. I've been in that predicament before and it isn't fun!
I think this has easily been some of the closest playing to the original recordings I think I've heard on sounds like in a while! Really naileded La Grange!!
You guys are amazing. Keep âem coming!
That R9 is a twin of my R9. Wish I had the amp as well. Astoria sounds great.
Way way closer. Great job, that Marshall sounds great!
Stringing together a great rig is like a string of pearls...with a whole bunch of growl! Great job, guys as usual. Cheers. \w/
I've discovered the perfect way to watch this.... slightly intoxicated at twice the usual listening volume! :) :) :)
Mark Hoskins đ» đ
Can't get enough of that Astoria. Stellar tones.
Sick similarity in the tone domain. Beautiful
As a life long ZZ Top fan and having just recently seen The Rev Billy G in person, you have done him proud, well done on the sound. Eyes closed it took me back, mmmmm that Fat Fuzz, I like it a lot.
Can you guys please do Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers next?
Hear hear! I wish more gear channels would cover them.
@@misterknightowlandco Almost no one does.
Sub Machine was one of the first pedals I bought about three years ago. Still have it. Almost never think of selling it
The best way to explain that edge control on the amp is that it gives a sort of edge to the tone. And the more you dial it in the more edge it gives.
Great job! LOVE these videos great style for any business to model off of!
Iâve been waiting on this one, well done!
Yes, I agree with The Fernanator ... Billy Duffy from The Cult Sounds like ... he has such an iconic 80s rock sound
great video, this is where the Anderton story really work, these are just guys having a good time and we get to hang out ... honestly great work on the LaGrange lift
Anyone else jump when Rebea âdroppedâ the guitar?
Nah, it was only a Gibson
Great sounding rig! All I need in my life now is SRV BY BUSTING!
Brilliant as always, thanks.
to all you idiots saying this doesn't sound like ZZ Top, yes it does!it sounds way closer than the without busting video!
I love you guys, thank you!
Fantastic tones thx
Thatâs a massive sound! Love it!!!!
Marshall Lead 12 ( solid state) Fuzz pedal, tube screamer, ( chorus for the recycler years) Humbucker ( coil tap for kicks) done
That Les Paul is PERFECT! However, that Strat nailed "La Grange". Well done, guys \m/
Cool video and sick tones.
Cheers, guys
The cut back to the two of you in the intro to La Grange stood the hair up. Very nice.
The mxr fuzz/octave riff sounded very Wolfmotherish .Love it
That Strat is awesome!
The color change on that burst is striking đł so nice
La Grange sounds dead on balls accurate! Good job.
I saw ZZ Top at Western Springs back in the eighties when they got banned for being too loud! đ€Łđ€Łđ€đ€Still one of the best concerts Iâve ever been too! You guys did a good job with the tones! đ€đ€
A Gretch G6199 would have great. Billy REALLY likes this one. The ASTORIA sounds better, IMO, than most modern Marshalls. Great job guys!
Thanks, guys. Really enjoyed that. I dated a girl in high school named Dusty Hill, whose favorite bands were ZZ Top, Van Halen, and Def Leppard, and her father was a rodeo clown. Kid you not. It was all very Arizona circa 1986. But I digest.
My anxiety went through the roof when Bea dropped that LP!... Great job as always dudes!
Great sound!!!!! Gotsta Get Paid was spot on! I donât feel so bad now, Iâve never been able to replicate La Grange sound in my LP... I always thought he recorded it with Pearly Gates! Definitely got it with the Strat
That was spot on guys. Great freakin rig!
Amazing job boys x
Man! Rabea is such an amazing player!!! Fantastic!!
in the intro does anyone know what model that prs is behind them and why the bridge pickup is inverted? like obviously it affects tone but does it make it warmer and such?
Glad you guys added the strat! Since it's a by busting, I think you guys should totally get more than one guitar since it is a by busting and there is no budget. Keep up the amazing work guys! ^_^
Those guitar tones were killer! Well done.
Nice I was listening to these guys this morning and was just wondering how billy gets those tones
I live by Charley's guitar shop in Dallas. I know for fact that throughout the 70's and 80's billy Gibbons was buying every SuperFuzz he could find so much so he alone raised their worth. I know because I play them as well . That thru 70's 50 watt jmp heads thru greenback rola 25 watter's is the ZZ sound. All of the first records.
Man, this guitar sounds AMAZING!
So clean. Well played đđœđđœđđœ
Awesome. I'll see them live next month đ€
Great Vid.... cracked it. Apart from the omission of course of not trying to get Dusty Hills setup.
Bass very often gets very ignored.
Lovinâ the videos.
Billy Gibbons, the man whose riffs are as majestic as his beard
In light of recent events (RIP Dusty Hill) I've been watching some ZZtop vids, and you guys just nailed "gots ta get paid" - - awesome
LOVE having the Bass guitar with the guitar.
Finally Iâve been waiting
Tele is needed for La Grange. It's a cranked marshall/silverface champ and an esquire. No strats involved.
Sebastian Sanchez nah it was a 55 start pretty sure itâs been quoted in an interview by zz top
The esquire was used of Jesus left Chicago
Great playing Rabea
Ohh sweet been wanting this one should of used the Lagrange pedal
That Sub Machine sounds DIRRRRRTYYYY!
You certainly nailed it! Well done :)
