    During the Anime Boom, Disney bought Fox Kids and turned it into Jetix. Looking to expand their anime-esque programming, they turned toward their Italian publisher for inspiration, in the form of W.I.T.C.H.

    Y'all don't realise how massive W.I.T.C.H. was in Europe. It's ICONIC, I literally learned how to read at like 4 or 5 because I loved it so much. Yeah, exactly. It bugs me when people say W.I.T.C.H. failed when it left a big impact here. Sometimes shows gets cancelled for various reasons and it sucks but their legacy remains and that's important. I think in some places W.I.T.C.H. is more widely loved than Winx because back in middle school I never heard people talk about Winx but my classmates were having W.I.T.C.H. merchandise for sure.

    I always felt like they should have started with JUST Hay Lin, so we had her grandmother giving us the exposition for world building. Then she has to find the other 4 Guardians, and the payoff would be finding Will who finally grants them their Guardian powers. The perspective can then shift to Will, as she is the new girl and must get to know the other girls in the same way the audience has to.

    As a male who appreciated the action genre, I can say for certain I enjoyed Witch more than Winx. Winx fairies' main weapons in their arsenal is ambiguous light beams. Witch guardians had a lot more strategies and unique applications for their abilities. This made me more willing to watch/read it as a kid even when there is still a subtle cultural taboo for guys to watch girl media.

      I agree! It was more strategic and there seemed to be more lore, and the world reminded me of older fantasy genres (like a more colorful, dram ridden lord of the rings). It was easier to play as the characters with my friends on the playground because we could spend time brain storming about the different powers and making up cool fight scenes.
      There was no other “girl show” quite like it and I’m actually really grateful I had it- I spent most of my childhood looking up to boys and this was a show that made me feel happy to be a girl without also feeling like I had to push myself to be someone I’m not.

    The reason the first season of WITCH was like that was because they were trying to appeal to a male audience as well as a female audience by putting more emphasis on the action, than character development like many superhero cartoons do and making Caleb appear earlier in the story and have way more screen time than his comic book version. When the show starts, our main character doesn't even appear until several minutes into the show. The very first face you see is Caleb. They also added Blunk to appeal to boys and more comic relief. Fans of the comic book series were upset by the cartoon version since it was so vastly different. That's why season 2 was a bit closer to the comic books and finally brought elements to the series that were in the comic book to the show such as Will's machinery power, the elders of Kandrakar, Irma's ability to change the designs of her clothes, Cornelia's power to clean with her mind, etc. But the show ultimately got canceled because it kept trying to be something it wasn't. I hope one day the series is remade and follows the comic closer. Especially if it gets better art. The cartoon had such murky colors while the comic was beautiful.

      @@ArcaniaSkypirateDen9516 The problem is that there are shows with a female audience in mind such as W.I.T.C.H. and Cardcaptor Sakura and when try to appeal to the male audience, they take away rather than add most of the time. The CCS dub got rid of most of the episodes because "they were too slow" and rearranged episodes to make the main male character look like the main character and the actual female main character have a lesser role. W.I.T.C.H. comic had beautiful art and plenty of fantasy stuff, but they took away the colors and the character development to "appeal to boys". This is more of cartoon companies saying "boys can't relate to female characters" than "girls don't like action". There was plenty of action in the comics.

      I just rewatched WITCH and in this version the show had the US opening. I kept thinking, especially in season 2, "Was the opening always this... meh?". I didn't even realize I saw a different opening during my childhood until I read this comment so no nostalgia blinding me. I don't mind the different music, both versions have their own charm in this regard and they both have catchy songs, but the visuals in the European versions are superior imo. They are more cohesive and clean, not having every frame overloaded with complicated backgrounds, clearer usage of powers for every girl (I couldn't have guessed Cornelia's and Will's powers from their parts of the intro alone in the US version), showing more characters in the opening (especially in season 2), better use of angles and poses and how the animation is syncing with the song in a more significant way. I do really like having the girls' names on the screen in the US version, even though I think having their initials alone appear in the 2nd powers showcase is overdoing it, so I wish that was in the other version as well instead of just having their initials on their shirts which is kinda silly. Overall I love the European season 2 opening and I think it's the best out of all of them.

      @Erika-xm2mi Před 2 lety +7

      Here are my guesses based on what I know from the comics as well:
      Irma - To keep the group together first of all. I recall times where Irma pep talked the other girls and she seemed to really be the glue who kept them all together, not to mention the way she was the one who welcomed Will into their group the quickest. Also, she seemed most capable with her powers. Out of all the girls, Irma was the first one to learn to use her powers and to master them as well. Out of all the girls, she was the most skilled and most in touch with her powers to where she almost seemed like a prodigy. Also, maybe it had to do with her carefree attitude? She could have been chosen to also be taught a lesson and namely that you can't always deal with everything like it's a joke.
      Taranee - She has a calm personality and often showed patience, something that contrasts well with her power. Also, being the smartest of the group and somewhat of a strategist, she would have the potential to help the group by noticing things that others don't notice due to her intelligence, attention to detail and outside-the-box thinking. Honestly, I could see why Taranee would be chosen mostly for her smarts.
      Will - So this is based on the comics and I am kind of upset they never brought this up in the cartoon. In the comics, it is eventually revealed that Will was born under the star of Cassidy. I don't know how to explain it and my memory is a bit fuzzy but I do recall the comics making a point about how Cassidy and Will were linked. I think it was also Kadma who revealed to Will that she and Halinor, while still alive, kept tabs on her ever since she was born because they knew she was meant to do great things. If anything, it appeared that Will was meant to continue Cassidy's legacy and to prove that one could carry the burden of keeping the Heart of Kandrakar without being corrupted by its power like Nerissa was. It felt like she was meant to right all the wrongs done by Nerissa. If anything, it seems like while the other girls were chosen by the Oracle for the mission, Will was chosen by destiny.

    I disagree with some things, like Elyon, for example. In the comic book, they immediately make it clear she's unusual and creepy and has some powers. We don't even see her interacting with the WITCH girls, except for the very beginning (and they are actually kind of mean to her). Then, all of a sudden, we're supposed to believe they were best friends and Elyon was betrayed.
    In the TV series, Elyon is friends with the girls for several episodes before sh*t goes down. You don't immediately notice her, but she's there, interacting with WITCH, hanging out with them. That's what makes it more satisfying to learn she is Phobos's sister. She was under our noses for a while, hidden in plain sight. It's a much more subtle way of unravelling the mystery than just immediately explaining everything. Whoever first watches the show probably thinks Will is Phobos's sister. And then, plot twist: it's Elyon!
    So it's not true that the series doesn't show how Elyon feels betrayed. There is an entire episode when Elyon finally learns the truth and freaks out when she realises her friends have known about it for months and hidden it from her. I'd feel betrayed in TV-Elyon's place too.

    Second season is amazing and where the tv series truly shines. All thanks to George Weisman who's a genius writer and director.
    Let's not pretend however that comic books were better. I loved them as a kid but they were a lot more inconsistent and chaotic. Elyon is kidnapped in the very first issue before we get to know her and the next time the girls meet her is in Meridian where she's 100% on the dark side. She doesn't hesitatet to hurt her "friends", trick them or even torture them(Taranee).
    Then turns out she simply has bipolar disorder because in another issue she has this sudden strike of doubt and wonders if she wasn't too harsh on her former friends.
    In TV series it's at the very least explained with enchantment. The main mistake writers did was not emphasize this enough but in one episode before Elyon is taken to Meridian they gather 3 objects that are supposed to weaken her will and make her more vulnerable to their tricks, more or less.

    I'm genuinely curious if the "Are you a Winx or WITCH girl?" thing was as hardcore in other countries as it was in Denmark at the height of these shows' popularity. It was essentially Pokémon versus Digimon, but for little girls (and boys) in the 2nd-5th grade. (For the record, mine is a Winx household, thank you very much.)
    We even have Danish writers, who've contributed books that seems to have only been released in Scandinavia, Scotland, Poland, and Russia. The comic was in every kiosk right next to Donald Duck, Spider-Man, and Winx in the kid/teen mag section. Hell, I still see WITCH stuff in the kids' section of my local bookstore, despite Danish translated manga and anime more or less dying out a few years ago.
    Also, fuck, I had a crush on Caleb. I totally forgot. Shit.

      I'm from the United States, there really wasn't much of a Winx Club vs. WITCH here. I heard of both shows, but my parents wouldn't let me watch them when they came out due to religious reasons. I only had one friend who had younger sisters that watched Winx Club and I didn't know anyone who watched WITCH.
      Both shows were almost unheard of unless you watched Fox Box/4KidsTV (Winx Club) and Jetix (WITCH). I think Winx Club was more recognizable, but it is almost remembered for negative reasons amongst US viewers since American entertainment companies rewrote the show's script to appeal to the US audience, but ended up making the characters appear very annoying to most people. Nickelodeon tried to revive Winx Club for a newer generation in the early 2010s, but it didn't catch on.
      For my opinions, I'm enjoying Winx Club a little more than WITCH because Winx's story is easier to follow (I am also watching the RAI English version of Winx, which is much better than the versions we got in America).

      Sherlock Holmes WITCH

    • @Erika-xm2mi
      @Erika-xm2mi Před 2 lety +1

      I am from Romania and this debate didn't really exist here because WITCH dominated due to the poor handling and licensing of Winx Club. WITCH comics were EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE was reading them. Even if the dolls entered our market quite late and were rather expensive, there was other merchandise that the fans could collect, like McDonald's Happy Meal toys, collectible stickers from bags of chips or chocolate croissants, there were handbooks, journals and two book series that had one book focus on one of the girls, every WITCH member had her own story. There were clothes, backpacks, school supplies that were from both official and bootleg providers, the knockoffs just proved how popular the series was and every girl competed with her group of friends to see which would be the first to get her hands on the newest issue when it came out.
      Winx Club, on the other hand, was poorly handled. It was licensed by one of the national Romanian stations and that doomed it by default because only an older demographic (50-60+) would watch that channel simply because it wasn't known for airing cartoons, rather focusing on documentaries, politics and internal issues and news. But to make things worse, the dub we got wasn't a genuine dub with a voice for each character, but a voiceover which meant there was one woman and one man doing all the voices. Eventually, for season two, it was just the woman doing ALL of the voices and you can imagine how ridiculous it sounded. Still, some fans like myself pulled through because we loved the concept, the animation and the transformation but I've only ever met one person who had been as genuinely invested in the series as I was. And even then I got more involved when I got access to the internet, found the English dub (both RAI and 4Kids) and saw that season 3 was in the works. Being there when season 3 was being hyped by releasing a picture of the girls' Enchantix one by one on the Winx Club website is one of my biggest flexes. Eventually, the Winx made a comeback when Nick got involved and Romanian Nick started airing it, but we obviously only got seasons 3-7 and the hour-long specials that condensed seasons 1 and 2.
      tl;dr WITCH vs Winx wasn't hardcore in my country because Winx was handled poorly and never stood a chance. Even so and even though I was more of a WITCH girl as a child and even though it still holds a very special place in my heart, I am more of a Winx girl now. Still, I would love to see a WITCH reboot.

      You have to keep in mind that, while similar in concept, they had different target audiences. W.i.t.c.h. was targeted at both a female *and* male audience and a pre-teen/teen demographic whereas Winx Club was targeted towards an exclusively female audience that was supposed to be dominated by older children and pre-teens. While this is not official, I think Winx Club had a recommended age of 7-10+ whereas W.i.t.c.h.'s was more 12-13+. It doesn't seem like a big gap between them but it actually makes all the difference in regards to how much violence can be shown and how mature and complex the dialogue can be.

    The issue is that in the Comics they were aware that they have these unnatural powers for sometime, but they were hiding them from eachother and everyone else until Yan Lin told them to spill the beans after which she told them of what happen to them, the being selected as the new generation of Guardians. Had the show started more relaxed and had us get introduced to these characters more casually then show us their struggle with hiding these bizzare out of the ordinary happenings before introducing us to Metamoor and the Veil Guardianship at hand.

    Only a clarification for around 14:40: The fall-out between Disney and the original creators happened not over the years, but during the run of the Meridian arc (roughly a year into production). The original creators would have not intended for Elyon to be a victim of manipulation and the whole story would have had a different direction.

It’s a huge deal for Cornelia bc they were besties and her grieving her friend is central to the story juxtaposed with her adoration for Caleb and also being separated from him due to the veil. The redemption of Elyon in the coronation arc is phenomenal.

When I rewatched W.I.T.C.H. a while ago, you can tell that the writers had set up for another season in the final episode in season 2, but I guess it would be awkward to try bring it back at this stage, especially with the creators and disney being at odds.
