    As a custom knife maker for over thirty years I've seen a lot of "first knives"! If this is indeed your first knife then I must say you show great skill in the use of hand tools and in the construction of this knife,..great job!

      +MrJohn714 Thank you! This was really my first knife! It took me a very long time to get it done! I realized later on that the heat treatment of the knife wasn't right and I had to remove the handles, re-harden and retemper the knife and make new handles for it. After that I was very pleased with the result! =D

    • @MrJohn714
      @MrJohn714 Před 8 lety +1

      +Yuri Darian Your very welcome! A little tip on heat treating, when using a forge such as you did its a good idea to have a small magnet nearby, when the steel has reached critical temperature and ready to quench it will become non-magnetic and not attracted to the magnet that's the time to quench!

    • @76aussieguy
      @76aussieguy Před 8 lety

      +MrJohn714 is that for both 1075 and 1084? and is a small rare earth magnet ok to use for this? i bought a pile off ebay a while ago so ive got more than a few handy, thanks

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 8 lety

      +76aussieguy It works with all simple steels! 1085,1075, 5160, O1, 52100, 4140 etc.
      The magnets you have will do just fine! Glue them to a rod and you are good to go!

    Hey Yuri!
    I'm unable to answer your comments on my videos because of your Google+ settings (you have public replies turned off, it's a silly feature). The acid that I use is called Ferric Chloride, it will definitely stain Micarta unfortunately. G10 however is immune to it and the combo works out very well for me! To get a clean consistent etch you have to finish sand your blade really well, and make sure that it's very clean (degrease it with detergent). I then etch a few times, just for 10 seconds at a time, and scrub the blade in between with a toothbrush and running water.

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 9 lety

      Gough Custom Its a good thing you told me about the micarta! Mine is not actually "micarta ®". Its a home made cloth+glass resin laminate. I think I'll test a piece of in the the acid to see what happens first! Thanks for letting me know, though!
      Is 400 grit too rough for the etch? If so, how high should I go?
      About the FC solution, do you dilute it or just use the concentrated stuff from Radio Shack? We don't have radio Shack in Brazil, but the solution I bought has the same concentration (about 40%).
      I've been looking all over for a etching tutorial with photos, surface prep, concentration and bath times but all I found on the forums was random recipes mixing different acids and very divergent oppinions resulting in no actual conclusion, hahahah! That is why I came to you.
      Thanks for getting back to me despite the Google+ settings nonsense. I'll find out how to disable it!

    • @GoughCustom
      @GoughCustom Před 9 lety

      Yuri Darian Hey mate!
      400 grit should be fine, the main thing is to make sure there's no decarb or scale left on the blade. Basically at 400 grit the steel should all look the same. Once it's nice and clean it will etch much more nicely!
      I used my acid as it came, it said it was pre-diluted though. That was quite a while back and I can't remember how concentrated it was! Whatever they recommend for PCBs is pretty much what you should use.

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 9 lety

      Thanks, Aaron!
      I'll sand it down to 400 grit and use te 40% solution I have. It is supposed to be used as it comes for PBC so it should be very close to what you used.
      I've been filming the process so I'll probably post a video os it after it's done. I'll let you know in case you want to see how it turned out!
      Thanks again for all the help!

      I didn't sharpen the knife on the video because I was waiting for my sharpening jig to arive. I bought a Lasky equivatent on ali-express (lansky.com/index.php/products/dlx-5-stone-system/). It works really well but my chinese equivalent wore out very quickly. Soon after I built my belt grinder and started shapening my knifes on it and polishing on a leather strop.
      Here is a video showing how the lanky shapening system works (czcams.com/video/ZlI5PaXsfOk/video.html) and here is another video I made where I use my belt-grinder to 1st sharpen a knife (czcams.com/video/103_oEgaeDI/video.html).

      Tulio, Beleza?
      Cara, a lima se chama "lima chata bastarda" em português. É fácil de achar. Sugiro comprar uma boa lima, como a Nicholson. Limas baratas geralmente são cementadas e o fio delas não dura muito.
      O forno para o endurecimento da lâmina pode ser feito com um maçarico de acender churrasqueira (procura maçarico lança chamas botijão de gás no google que aparece) e alguns tijolos. Se usar refratário, melhor ainda. Aquecer até que um imã não grude mais no aço e mergulhar em óleo (pode ser de carro usado ou óleo de cozinha). Depois é bom testar com a lima para ver se endureceu. Se tiver boa, a lima vai deslizar na borda da faca. Aí coloca ela no forno de cozinha ou elétrico a 200 graus por 2 horas. Pronto!

      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 8 lety

      Hi, Afif.
      This is a very relevant question! when I made this particular knife I left the edge with about 0.3 mm.
      It turned out to be too thin and I got a little warping on the edge. nothing major and it was fixed while giving the bevel its final finish!
      On the knifes that I've done after that, I leave the edge with 0.5mm. It prevents the blade from warping.
      I hope this helps you out!

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 3 lety

      Rayen, that process is what makes the steel hard, so it becomes a working knife.

    I think your blade might be soft... What kind of steel are you using?

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 8 lety +1

      This knife was made of O1 tool steel. It is a oil hardenable steel. It's critical temperature is about 850°C, right passed the magnetic transition.
      In theory, given the tempered temperature, it's hardness should be about 60 rockwell.
      It holds an edge pretty well. I can't really test its harness, because lack a durometer but I can't complaint, either.
      Why do say so?!

    • @malidaluo3804
      @malidaluo3804 Před 8 lety

      Hey bro. No offence. You have a really amazing knife. I apologize for this.
      I mean your knife was in dark red, so it might be around 1300 F to 1400 F when you put it into oil. I think the blade should be a little bit orange to reach the 1500 F. The tip of the knife is a little bit darker, so that might be 1200 F or less. I mean you did not heat up to 1500 F from my point of view.
      I might be wrong dude. I am not trying to prove that you are doing something wrong, By the way you can always do a file test to see its hardness. You put a file on a blade. If the file slip directly from the blade, that means you have a nice and hard blade.

      +malida luo
      Thank for the answer, dude!
      I think the camera kind of fool's us sometimes... when I first saw the footage I thought the same!
      But since I did a file test before tempering and it sharpens just fine, I think it turned out Ok.
      I've done 9 knifes after that one and aside from doing a magnet test before quenching, I always harden in the same lighting, to avoid the effect of light on the color of the steel. That has helped me a bit.
      Not hardening it correctly is fatal! I was lucky to get it right the first time without a magnet!
      Luckly I file tested it! =D
      Thanks again for the feedback!

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 5 lety +1

      I started of with 5 mm of thickness. The piece os steel I was able to get was a scrap from a die, I think , that a local machinist sold me.
      It was a little bent, so I had to pound on it a few times before I started.

    how can I temper the knife without a oven?

    • @YL_AmericadoSul
      @YL_AmericadoSul  Před 8 lety

      +Muhtasim “Frost” Hasan
      That would be very tricky to do!
      You could try putting your quenching oil in a pan use a stove to heat the oil to about 200C/400F and keep the knife in the oil. That would require a thermometer with a scale up to 250C/500F at least and full attention to the flame strength not to overheat the blade.
      You could also try to only soften the spine of the blade by keeping the edge in wather and heating the spine, but that would leave the cutting edge quite britle.
      The only reliable way to do it, though, is using an oven =/.
