    I am a graduate Speech Pathology student. There is nothing called "perfect" English, everyone has their unique dialect. Dialect is influenced by many factors. "Poo" & "pool" are both correct. The dictionary is only reliable up to a certain degree. Everyone has an accent, and it is very important for people to keep it in mind.

      Nobody speaks perfectly, not even a native speaker. Because spoken language is spontaneous,and not edited (like written language is),it's absurd to point out a few mistakes in spoken language and use that to draw a conclusion on someone's language ability. We're humams,not robots,therefore we make errors.

    There is nothing wrong to say" It was only until I was four that I really took up swimming lessions." That is how it is commonly spoken in north America.
    You are right to say "pool" is not "poo". In north America, it is sounded as "poo-l", with the tongue rollling at the end for the L sound. The way Siobhan said it sounded closer to how British says the word. All in all, I don't think it is right to say she does not have perfect English.

    • @al3220
      @al3220 Před 3 lety +1

      I disagree. "It wasn't until" / "was not until" - the "not until" tells the narrative that she did not take swimming seriously from when she was a baby until she was four years old. If you don't want to use the word "not", then we usually say something to the effect of "I was four when I really started taking up swimming lessons". FYI - I'm just disecting this particular piece for the purposes of this discussion. I think Siobhan is fluent in English and she did great in this interview!

    • @pyan5197
      @pyan5197 Před 3 lety +2

      @@al3220 You are free to disagree with me. However, I am not sure if you live in north America. The point I wanted to make is that it is perfectly normal the way Siobhan "said it" in US and Canada, ie . spoken English, not formal written format. "Not until" can be taken as double negative, and everyone here understands what she meant.

    • @al3220
      @al3220 Před 3 lety +1

      @@pyan5197 and I will exercise that option to disagree. FYI I have lived in North America for almost three decades. Not sure what bearing that has for our discussions, but since you are bringing this up - where do you live and what is your experience with "North American" English?

      其實就算native speakers講/寫其母語時不標準,或有錯漏,都不是奇事,沒什麼大不了。正因為有此現象,才會令專家學者發聲指正或糾正。
      我們中國人偶爾都讀錯中文字,或用了不標準語法。
      我曾聽過native speakers說mention about something(about不應存在)、the reason why...is because(不應用because ;應該用that)。
      指出問題所在實屬無可厚非。
      就這視頻而言,我同意指出用It was not until...that...才是正確用法(也可以用It was only when... that...) 。

      我猜想問題是你可能沒有察覺'R' 的發音很彈性 : 不同語言、方言、個人習慣會產生不同效果。
      比方說,日文的'R' 音聽起來就極似'L' 音。
      你聽到那個像說'experlience' 的人很可能發所有的'R' 音都類近你認為是'L' 的音 ; 有些操英式英語的native speakers 發'R' 音時,會發出「咕嚕咕嚕」聲,彷彿漱口時顫動喉嚨一樣(有點像意大利歌劇)。
      普通話中也有'R' 的發音,在音節尾(「兒」或其他兒化韻的字)聽來像美式英語的rhotic 'R' ,但'R' 在音節前(例如「日」、「熱」等字)唸來就有不同感覺了,再者,這些字的'R' 音在everyday speech和唱戲曲(例如京劇)時都有差別(後者類近'L') 。

    No offense, but I think it's absolutely absurd of you to say she doesn't speak perfect English. She speaks exactly like a native speaker and I doubt any English speaker would believe otherwise. I'm saying that as a native English speaker. It's silly to micro-analyze spoken language like that, because no native speaker will speak like a grammar book. We're humans,not robots or grammar books. If you put any native speaker under a microscope like you did here, you would most definitely find lots of things that violate the rules of grammar.
    Also,你聽錯,佢冇講 swimming poo.

      @@anpleidhceeireannach9498 that I agree with you. Saying a native speaker not speaking proper English, no wonder so many people in Hong Kong are so scared to actually speak, the unreal criticism from others stop them from speaking at all! How is it helpful? It’s crazy.
