- Women doctors are quitting medicine and dying by suicide at record rates. Bravely sharing her own story of near-suicide, Dr. Tammie Chang sheds light on the data behind the culture of silence that permeates the medical profession and highlights the key action steps we can take to change the culture of our healthcare and ensure a bright future for women in medicine. Dr. Tammie Chang is a pediatric oncologist, author, speaker, leadership coach, and fierce national advocate for cultural change in healthcare. She is the Co-Founder of Pink Coat, MD, the Co-Founder of ELEVATE, the American Medical Women's Association’s Leadership Development Program for Women Physicians, and the Medical Director of Provider Wellness for MultiCare Health System.
She is the author of Boundaries for Women Physicians, the co-author of How to Thrive as a Woman Physician, and the creator and host of the LeadHER Podcast for Women Physicians.
She has received numerous awards: Women We Admire’s Top 50 Women Leaders of Washington for 2022, the 2022 American Stevie Business Awards Gold Maverick of the Year and Woman of the Year, and Health 2.0’s 2022 Outstanding Healthcare Leadership Award.
Dr. Chang received her M.D. degree from Brown University and completed her training at the University of Massachusetts and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She made her point with me where she said doctors need to be given the same grace and compassion that they have devoted their lives to. Exactly.
Dr. Chang did an incredible job of detailing the struggles that female physicians are facing in the medical work force. Her vulnerability to share her story of depression and suicidality provides a person and support for many other feeling the same way or wanting to create a change for others. Her talk identifies how the medical field and medicine in general is not abiding by the ethical principles of equity and nonmaleficence for female physicians specifically. The statistics surrounding suicide, depression and the workload associated with being a female physician would challenge any individual to maintain mental stability. It was very impactful to hear her say “Doctor’s don’t ask for help”, as being a physician has a very admirable and respectful title, there exists a huge stigma associate with physician mental health. There needs to be a change surrounding that stigma, and all physicians need to be able to ask and receive the help they need not when they are close to making a life changing decision, but well before, when they start to notice a change or need time to themselves. Society and medicine needs to provide an equitable system for teaching, hiring and maintaining female physicians within the medical field.
This is so important. The burnout depression is a real thing. Part of it for me is not knowing who to ask for help. Not so much with the depression portion but who can help with practice overhaul to reduce stress.
As a female med student from Germany, I relate to this so much.

I feel like things are slowly changing thanks to the generations of women that became doctors before me.
I have started studying medicine about a year ago and a lot of our professors stress the importance of taking care of our own mental and physical health which is a step forward I think.
This is a must-hear talk -- not only for everyone in medicine, but also for the general public -- to understand the myriad of challenges faced by women in medicine. I loooove my female doctors. I have never been mistreated by a single one, but have been mistreated by the majority of male doctors. I seek out women who are POC if I have the choice. The downside is, they always seem to have less power over their practice and it affects how well they can help me. They almost always end up leaving or having very few hours... this explains it, thank you so much...
My mother was an anesthesiologist and I watched her work long hours. Going into medicine is an option and it is not for everyone.Take care of your mental health. It is apparently a very demanding field.

Wow please ignore the mean-hearted comments. Thank you for speaking your truth. If not for compassionate female doctors I wouldn't be alive, and I pray for them often because I know the entire medical community is overstretched and underappreciated. They are people first and at the end of the day they're still human and need the same support and compassion they give their patients. We each need to feel supported regardless of our job.

Thank you Dr. Tammie Chang. You presented many points that are extremely relevant to many women in the work force relating to mental health. Personally, as a 1st year medical student, every thing you listed relating to the challenges women may face as medical professionals (working professionals, mother's, wives, caregivers and providers to children and elderly parents, etc) are barriers/ and reasons as to why I have wanted to give up this journey. However, I believe that it is women like you, and many others that give women like me the power to keep going. I am fortunate to have had many life experiences that have challenged my mental health status although others may not see these experiences as fortunate, it is because of this, I have learnt how to manage my mental health and continue to learn ways that will help me as I progress through life. Your TED talk has given me information that I will now use, share and apply in my future endeavours as a health professional. Sharing this conversation as I begin networking with other students, health professionals and mental health professionals is something I see as an advantage. Thank you for sharing your truth.
I feel for this woman and all women doctors. I ask that everyone also understand the men doctors could be silently struggling as well. This is something they deal with everyday.

Try imagining what it's like to be a doctor, surrounded by people who are dying or sick, knowing there will be many cases where you cannot save your patients. You are fighting life and death while having to smile and act like everything is ok. Maybe instead of being trolls and hard-headed idiots who jump at every moment to make a harsh comment to feed into your broken ego, or trauma, Get help for your mental well-being and stop the cycle of cyberbullying.
Also Maybe open and clean your ears because then you will hear that she does mention all doctors regardless of gender need to get help, she focuses on women or female doctors because she is a female and can therefore understand that side of the story more. She isn't gaslighting anyone or naming names or playing the blame game, she is coming in honesty and bravery to talk about her near-suicide and her experience, along with giving factual evidence of the truth.

Being in the medical industry for over 25 years, I was not aware of these alarming statistics. Personally, I have seen the rapid increase of woman in medicine as physicians and what a good thing it is. All that training to have 40% leave medicine? We need woman in medicine. Thinking female doctors are victims is pure online delusion
I resonate with what Dr. Tammie Chang is saying here. I have worked in the clinics, and have observed time and time again that the women doctors are expected to do double of what the male doctors are expected to do. Also, usually the female doctors are more organized, and if they speak up to the unfair nuances, they get the silent treatment, from the managers and the staff.
Tammie, thank you for sharing your vulnerable story about the experience of women doctors and mental health. It is a topic that needs to be addressed and discussed. Your talk can be used in so many settings to initiate this much-needed conversation. Also, love your dress!

Permit me to show my ignorance in what we have always assumed as the all-knowing section of society, to the point that Doctors are always perceived to be superhuman, regardless of gender. The truth is either Doctors themselves or society has put them on a pedestal, devoid of problems. The first Doctor to commit suicide (was one too many), should have triggered the warning signs that all was not well with either the work-load or other commitments.
My perception, and it is mine alone, is that trainee doctors are the most abused, in my estimation during rounds on the wards and this “ feudal -lordship system, stays with doctors for a long time and it may seem no one wants to break this “boot-camp-like” of doctor’s training and beyond.
With the invention of so many communication tools, could the ward round and the question put to students be communicated without everyone hearing the lecturer or professor pontificating about the subject matter. Either the schools of medicine or society has decided that the most intellectually acute persons should read medicine and the institutions disregard any individuals who fall below the mark. This criterion comes with another requirement, the stiff upper lip of mental endurance unrelated to the subject matter of medicine.
It may well be, doctors require referrals to other specialists, but I detect a more human aspect of what practitioners need - social services, spaced out maternity time and the accommodation of doctors by the system to have a me-time breathing space.
The other matter of interest is the refusal of the profession to yield knowledge or some know-how to nurses or perhaps pharmacists and allied professions - the delegation of some duties (a piece -meal attempt is ongoing) to address this.
The disparity on pay is another matter - in my view pay should be reasonably related to the standard of living for others and another layer to doctors. When allied health officers cannot feed themselves, it impacts doctors in a significant way. Taking one’s life is not a good way to organise society, we want our doctors to be alive, respected, supported and to say to them the welcomed thank you, that all humans appreciate.

Evn if you ask for help, there needs to be somebody to listen and is empowered to do something about it and that's something that crosses genders.
This is deplorable on so many levels to hear these statistics...didn't know there was a gender pay gap among doctors....enough...maybe it is time to unionize a woman tile setter, plumber, gets same pay and benefits as the men...Many things are invisible in the medical industry in this country and mental health is at the top.. this country is brutal to all who actually work...
I stopped believing in doctors since I was told that my condition was chronic and had no cure but to take the pill. I decided to not depend on the pharmaceutical industry and to take responsibility on my own heath. Doctors nowadays don’t see us as patients but customers:(.

I'm worried as I've met threethat quit due to the same problems I have. My cousin is a doc, she beat it with successes. I am hearing doctors and therapy to case mgmt are burning out.
I wish I had help with landlords and housing I've a voucher expires 1 12, an income, CZcams home what do I do? I feel the same as these opinions are. It's said of me another medicaid case at times. But maybe that's their banter I told myself and just felt smaller and more ubwell. I'm embarrassed I'm homeless. I do anatomical skeleton and tissue art. I want doctors to stay. they have changed my life so much. I did not want to stay on SSI but my health is failing dear CZcams home I just want to do art and stay well. I caught pleurisy lung abscess pnenonua got cleared and hospital case mgnt was livid I was going back to my car they said I must ask for help. That was 12/15/2021 I'm stay away from drinks or any pills that won't help me. I adhere to vortex success CZcams mind's in unison. Lady doctors saved my life and did so much please support localmedicine . I startedlocal food and school supply feminity items at boxes around where I was as help. I fear SSI and family disownership faces docs that lead just keep going but doctors get tired too.

I've met two homeless doctors along the way they left for part time then quit.

There's so many wonderful resources here....here's something I say, all my problems have solutions arriving. I've seen that manifest in 15 years. I used to say blend SSRI and zelnorm. Where does this doctor live? I would be very surprised if our roads in Canada or even the USA were so dangerous that you can just merely drive off a cliff. I drive along the lake Erie shoreline sometimes and yes it would be possible to drive into the lake but there are huge concrete blocks put in place as a barrier.
You can drive off a cliff in California, for sure. (Dr Patel did it and took his family with him. If you know that story.) and you can drive off a cliff in Maine and you can drive off a cliff in Oregon. Now that I think about it, your comment is not thought out well.
If it gets that bad, she could teach medicine. I had a woman doctor who was excellent, and she was forced out due to paperwork mistake via politics to force her out and possibly pay scale and she wasn't even retirement age. I think it was so that she wouldn't receive full retirement and the hospital can hire younger doctors at a much cheaper rate.

She spent her life learning medicine to be a doctor. We don’t want all our female doctors dropping out to teach medicine, let’s fix the system for God sake.

I don't understand why your solution is for both men and women to "stop complaining". That's actually what the problem is, people don't complain, they don't seek help when they need it, and then suffer. She didn't seek help until after she tried to kill herself, which is too late because she could've died. People need help sometimes, and telling them to be quiet and not ask for help when they need it isn't going to save anyone...

Do you also realize that doctors can be the source of other's people's depression and suicidal thoughts? When someone working just a menial job finds out that their loved one was killed by stealth euthanasia without anyone's consent that is trauma that person will deal with for the rest of their life. In this case the doctor who masterminded the killing was a woman and the nurse who carried it out was also a woman. A job that comes with more money than most working people will ever make is something that anyone can walk away from if it gets unbearable. A murdered person will always stay dead there's no undoing it.
If we’re having such a hard time handling the pressure of the job, maybe we should go back to merit based admissions that are gender and race blind.
As a woman of color, the pressures of “having it all” are not a sign that the culture of physicians or of medicine need to change: it’s a sign that not everyone can handle the role.
Those are the exact people who shouldn’t BE doctors. Clearly others are better able to handle it.
I am so very sick of the victim complex. If you can’t practice what you preach about seeking mental health care, get out of medicine. Stop asking for your patient demographic to pay for regulatory changes that you think will make you equally capable while simultaneously making 3-10x as much as they do. You can’t do it well by your own admission.
No one seeking quality health care seeks out a physician who is only a doctor because of the bonus points they scored due to factors unrelated to their merit and who cracks under the pressure. Weak is never strong, and we are not all the same: “you can be anything you want to be” was a fairy tale for the mediocre, not the reality of the profession.

Being a working wife / mom is difficult for any woman. What this lady is talking about is probably just as serious in other high-stress jobs like lawyers, engineers, CEOs, etc. Countless young women have been lied to and told they can "have it all". Today men can just be men, while women are expected to fill the role of both man (career) and woman (family). There are only 24 hours in a day.

I have. The problem is that they are convinced to be free and fulfilled they need a job, but the truth is women want families just as much or more so yes they're stressed out and whiny. Its politician propaganda. They told women they could have it all.....babies when they're old (like over 35) , education, career, family and run a home. No they cant. Women are very confused because of tv propaganda and half never had their real dad as a child.

Where is the evidence that female doctors are paid less for the same work as their male counterparts? You can give a poignant presentation without appealing to all the tenants of contemporary feminism such as gender pay gap in the health work force. There is no evidence in any country under the sun that female doctors are paid differently from their male colleagues for the same work. All doctors depending on their specialisation are paid accordingly and not because of their gender. The other points she raised are valid especially the depression among health workers. We need to put in place a better support system.

Try imagining what it's like to be a doctor, surrounded by people who are dying or sick, knowing there will be many cases where you cannot save your patients. You are fighting life and death while having to smile and act like everything is ok. Maybe instead of being trolls and hard-headed idiots who jump at every moment to make a harsh comment to feed into your broken ego, or trauma, Get help for your mental well-being and stop the cycle of cyberbullying.
Also Maybe open and clean your ears because then you will hear that she does mention all doctors regardless of gender need to get help, she focuses on women or female doctors because she is a female and can therefore understand that side of the story more. She isn't gaslighting anyone or naming names or playing the blame game, she is coming in honesty and bravery to talk about her near-suicide and her experience, along with giving factual evidence of the truth.

@@caitlynpaddy6631 look, doctoring isnt for everybody. In fact, it's only suitable for some, not the majority of people. You have to have certain personality traits and interests to be a doctor snd it sounds like it was too stressful a career choice for her. Doctors dont need to be coddled more. Sure they have stress, that's why they make the BIG BUCKS . Shes wanting her career dream to mold itself to her comfort level. With a medical degree she can find a comfortable job. She just wont be with the sick. And the way she sounds, I think she'd have these depression anxiety problems regardless of her career

Not long ago TEDx videos had variety and substance, now their all "wokeism" and identity politics. Reject those two and there will be no "hate" anymore

I personally know six physicians who committed suicide. Five were male. It is not a "female weakness" problem.
It's good to be here for year 8 or longer. I really enjoy my time here and listen often. I bring my journal and reddit and starting thinking, writing. Thank for helping me in life. I am not good at what to say. I spent the first seven or eight years in Serbia then I was brought here with my parents.
I was homeschled isolated. Attended college forced to study law, medicine, I told my wonderful hopeful family please let me just paint. I know in my teens I had bi piloar but no one saw it I was straight A, excellent art.
I've meant to say your presence at other platforms are cool. I appreciate following those they are uplifting . Women are stressing about it's not their fault they too had an abortion they too wanted one and regret birth. I mean the nicest most real pple are lafy doctors. I saw one that gave me zofran. I wish SSRI, zofran and zelnorm were blended. That's a solution for depression the stomach upset and panic.
It was several times I heard the sane few doctors talking at Ted talks about depression that reached me. I want to work but my meds manage me. Then I listen to medications and addiction channel content. What do I do? I'm rejected by a higher income higher better people than me? They are, my family but they are superior to the world. If I fail medicine I'll lose my family, what I said. It maddening heartache that needs a med like that blend.
I, like everyone else look for the meaning. I feel my art matters thus I was called to that. I felt medicine was too intense I'm more research or clerical so I tried mental health . I was not strong enough I'm sorry I failed it's complicated. I feel such shame about it I practice goddess affirmations at Jessica helsop. I wanted to give back to my community after college not picking a mate or family just my art. They threw me away.
Because of teds talks I can say these words without shame or fear. Happy new year, I'll send this out to others to hear. I'm seeing more homeless nurses needing food help at bank or food bank. I make supply bags in Norman Oklahoma I went to Arkansas to Tennessee to pa or up there back to Arkansas. Case.gmt needs me to stay in my car or they stop services.

What you can do : is tell those medical students (who are mostly women) to not become a doctor. Tell young women in general that higher education is not going to make you happy.

How is that a helpful idea? We need to solve the problem and give physicians way more support. Medical schools need to change the zeitgeist that physicians need to always be in charge and to need help makes them appear vulnerable! They need to learn to rely on their teams more. Everyone is there to help them.

We need more doctors and better support for all doctors, especially for compassion fatigue.
Is that truly an acceptable solution in your eyes? To encourage women to not enter the field of medicine (or any higher education)? Perhaps we can take some advice from this speaker and make the medical profession a place of support for ALL doctors so that they can thrive doing what they love.
