JM FOR LIFE!!! - Hudba
Listening to JM automatically makes you a better guitarist. No logical explanation. Even if you don't play.
Its inspiration my friend cause his genius ways are so easy :)
That is very true... any musician is as good as their ear is
Yup, whenever I get on a JM listening spree, my riffs and tone go exponential... he has taught me so much about phrasing and playing what your brain is saying.
Jm has forgotten more about guitar than I’ll ever have learnt in my life time
Soul beats speed, perfect. Thats Why John is the best.
+Pablo Morillo He used to just play fast, but he's found much more soul and feeling in his playing in the past 5-6 years. Best of his generation in my opinion.
+Mitch Phillips True
+Pablo Morillo yeah but if you can add both then you magic.
+CanOfPeas who is the best player for you .?
+CanOfPeas youre absolutly right. music is not a sport, either a competition.
6:37 huh...moving on and getting over was starting to take form
ninja edit: (18:24)"If you remember what you were bullshitting and do it again next time, you got a song" damn straight, John
Got chills when he started to play "Covered In Rain". Such an amazing piece of art. Can't wait for the new album!
reading this comment, and haven't reached that part yet. man i wish i could've seen him play it live just like old times
if anyone wants to get signifantly better at guitar. get a printout of the C#minor pent scale and master slow dancing in a burning room and his two rock version, play it till you can play it 5 different ways and study how john traverses the scale chord progression. thank me later
This is actually quite accurate, its how i started off learning
+Ivo Coenjaerds To move across something.
The two rock version gives you access to so many different tricks its such a great one to learn.
Is it not E major pentatonic? Same notes in the scale I know, but the root feels more like E to me. All the chords in the song are in the E major scale. Playing bluesy licks ending on C# doesn't work as well to my ear. I dunno, genuinely curious.
C#min and Emaj scales use the same notes. His 1 chord is the C#min, so the piece is in C#min.
Ending a lick on E at the end of the chord progression sounds good because his last chord is the E major chord played in 4th position. If you play a solo over a full section, you will end your solo on the E chord and thus the E sounds magnificent used in that manner. (And E is also in C#min scale so it will always sound good used, not even dependant on where you start or stop.) Ending on an E over an E chord (or A over A chord, etc.) is commonly used and will always sound good. You could however end on a C# just to make the song fall back into the I chord. You could also keep playing over the E chord and end with a C# over the C#min chord on the first count, which is sometimes used and then be silent for the rest of the chord progression to lower the tension after you played a blazing solo. Whatever suits you and the solo played at that time.
It might just give you a bluesier feel in this, but don't mistake general theory with blues and definitely not with what you feel sounds better or not:
The chord progression in the song is I-VI-III sometimes using the VII chord, which is not a common blues progression (I-IV-V is f.e., where the follow up of those is dependant on it being f.e. a 12 bar or 9 bar blues and how the turnaround is shaped.)
BTW, a song is never in "pentatonic". You can play a full C#minor scale over this song and it sounds good... John himself uses more than just the pentatonic notes. (Full C#minor scale).
Blues notes being the bIII, bV and the bVII are not used in the chord progression of this song and almost never used by john playing over this song. He also never uses 7 chords on this song which are not necessary for a blues progression, but used A LOT to create a bluesier sound, also by John.
It is not all blues because John plays it. He utilizes it, but not everything he does is.
Just as you think your getting good at the guitar within the confines of your four walled bedroom, John Mayer destroys you with half a lick.
+Jordan McKenna so true its painful
+Jordan McKenna ...bedroom, John Mayer INSPIRES you with half a lick." FTFY :)
+Jordan McKenna You know he said he played 8yrs in his bedroom alone before he started to play with anyone? Just saying.
+Jordan McKenna Amen.
+Jordan McKenna So true it hurts
He just keeps getting better, insane
+Jesse Stumpf well duh, thats what happens when u play a lot ...
+Dick Indiaz well not exactly but you get it
+Jesse Stumpf I agree, John said once you hit a level it's really tough to get "better". But the way he has diversified his style and details with his playing is getting so interesting. Definitely one of the best.
jlim200 its true he is learning new things and u notice, its not like clapton who never learned anything after pentatonic
+Dick Indiaz Clapton's music doesn't really need to go beyond that. It's what you do with it that counts, not the simplicity
I would pay to see John Mayer play solo electric guitar all night
Ouh hell yeah!
ı thınk john fruciante haven't a smart phone :D
He's on tour so I think that might be a good way
Isn’t that what going to see him live in concert is? 😂
its called a concert
It was 7:45am in the UK when I requested Another Kind of Green. I was half asleep when he did it..so happy you posted this!
I don't care what anybody says about JM.. He inspires me. And is probably my favorite modern guitar player! always great tone and tasteful playing!
3:06 - 3:37 "Sleep Walk" by Santo & Johnny
i could watch this guy play all day
“I have not played that lick in a long time” *proceeds to perform a jaw-droppingly clever and beautiful variation of it on live video*
6:44 Moving On and Getting Over anyone?
Hao Le damn right!!!
Hao Le hahaha that's great
That's precisely an example of what he said later "If you remember what you were bullshiting on the guitar, you have a new song".
yeah heard that too hahah
Mighty tasty. The 594 tone is deelish.
What a treat to catch John just messing around. This was awesome. Thanks John.
Now this is why I love John Mayer! One of the best guitarists of today. Oh man, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room gets me every time!
So this is pretty much the best video on all of CZcams.
Danny Anderson seriously though.
Danny Anderson so true
That coverd in the rain bit was amazing
It’s 2020 and this still makes me happy
Same :)
It's 2022 now and I still love this!
It’s 2024 and I still love this!
I almost cry with covered in rain..damm
Thank you so much for posting this, what a treat!
Him playing The Root in this just made my day 100x better. Would love to hear John collab with D'Angelo.. John, Pino, Steve Jordan/Quest and D'Angelo.... Yowza
Man I sure do love this guys playing! So soulful yet well arranged. To all you younger guys who feel discouraged by this video don't be! This will come in time. John has been playing for a while now. So it just takes practice and passion!
Gorgeous. I've watched this video so many times and I can't stop
Thanks, man every time I listen to you it makes me pick up the guitar and practice for hours.
Listening to this while getting ready in the morning and it's just perfect.
Gorgeous playing John....coaxing beautiful tones and taking us on rides...thanks man....as always you inspire!
I enjoyed this enormously. Such a focused and generous teacher - thanks!
These are literally my favorite JM songs. Great job peeps of periscope.
His noodling on Covered in Rain ..... OMG! Beautiful .... brings me back to NYC. Amazing.
Timothy Shea i come back to this video JUST for that. Best jam of the video
John's Amazing, So Much Music and Soul In Him, Good Lord Love's This Boy!
Well that throws me under the bus!
John C. Mayer does not need anything else from the world but the love of his music Suzannah Santa Barbara. Ca wish I could send pic you were graciously given to me Paso Robles Ribs wafting in the air as you were blow-in me away thank-you, for sharing your beautiful guitar ! How effortless. You are and your lyrically amazing and you sing well your a a major or minor breath of fresh air for this girl 202 Thank you from mon my soul .
I wish I loved music as much as John Mayer does. You can just see and feel his passion so strongly watching him noodle like this.
Welp! That tears it......I'm gettin a tele.
never a bad choice ;)
Just cuz you have a tele doesn't mean you'll sound that good
Interesting conclusion you made there....... I never said it would make me sound that good....but still bought one and love it.
David Davis if you're getting one based on this video, don't. I live in Nashville and hear 45 teles a day......I have never heard one that sounds this damn good.
One my favorite guitars players of all time
Its amazing he just pulls out If I Ever Get Around To Living. So, so cool.
He can make that guitar sing angelically!!! :) Luv'it!!!
My favorite artist playing a guitar from my favorite guitar company. Maryland Pride!! Stoked about a potential signature model!
The only other time I heard a PRS is when I listened to Santana, but when John brought his out...wow, that accurate Gibson and Fender tone!
the tone of the prs just changed the mood in my house!! wow!!
Wow, I'm sitting at home with John Mayer
my godddd that sound
gracias por la compañia john...sos un genio!!!!!!
John just beautiful tone and playing, true mastery of guitar
Amen, never had so many goosebumps in a video.
Thanks John! Great videos
he's sooooooooo goooooood ! im falling in loveeeeeeeeee
Gifted.
I sincerely hope to hear it again on the next album (to help forget the last ones)
This guy has much much better phrasing than Bonamassa.
bonamassa who?
Why bash another great guitarist??theres nothing about bonamassa ...why mention him and bash him....all guitar players are unique and different...it's not a competition all just personal preference ....so instead of making petty comments just listen to ppl u like and not bash ppl...u should respect music and have an open mind....doubtful John Mayer sits around bashing ppl...he loves music and has an open mind
It’s hard to compare two people when they play different styles, have different influences etc.
bonamassa doesn't have feel man but our mayer is king in that.....
Depends on how you perceive it to be
Bonamassa is a very talented/accomplished guitarist but lacks the pop hype. John has the perfect feel for the blues
Yes ❤ this love you been listening for a long time
dear John, It is so inspiring to see you play. You do not know how much beginners like me take energy from this..Hopefully you will take the time to do this in the future more. Thanks and greeting from Holland!
I have a dual pro, I believe it was the 18th ever built, sounds absolutely fantastic! took the v 30s (England) and put them in my 70 pro reverb, have now JBL k120s in DP.. This sound is intoxicating..Thank you for sharing
Man I am pretty sure I could listen to John play like this all day long. UGH!
I was enjoying the heart of life song so much. I was really hoping he would remember the words. Anyway, that's a precious gift he has.
Watched this live, such a great feeling! :)
+Quack OP Not LIVE ofc
John Mayer really shows you that sometimes less is more
I love how he's "wrapping up" then someone says prs news 😂
+agentwings We're just trying to stall him as much as possible.
Fantastic! #Breathless #LoveJohnMayer
very awesome video ! thanks
the soul still there my dear John just go back yo the roots.
6:45 movin on getting over being born
That closing chord progression on the prs in the last few minutes is too good
thank you mayer'.
Good to see you with a fender john.
I think i'm more blown away by the room hes in and that lighting.
Such a nice guy
Carry on Soul Man!!! Thanks for the hang...
hes like a guitarists guitarist and a liteners guitarist at the same time. that is a talent that is greatly lacking in most guitarists today. he gives a guitarist the licks he craves but phrases them in a way that is very enjoyable to listen to.
It's been said a million times, but I need to echo it. I've noticed that John Mayer sounds like John Mayer no matter what guitar he is playing, proving what we all have known for years and years and years - that tone, for a large part, is IN YOUR HANDS. I'm not saying that having nice gear isn't better, or that a Les Paul sounds the same as a Strat. Not at all. What I am saying is that I could have all John Mayer's gear and still not sound like him.
oh my god! at 6:41 he started to play moving on and getting over!!! i love it
thanx very much for this video my friend !!
Burning room sounds amazing on a tele! He should use one live for that tune!
Anyone who feels personally attacked by his playing: he has been playing for over 20 years!!
For anyone listening in 2018! Check out 6:40 ish, Liitle snippet of moving on and getting over!!!
What I would give for John Frusciante to start periscoping...
Yes please. i love Mayer, but Froosh is just something else again
yee...totally agree....i miss JF playing guitar on stage...
so good
Hope to hear your new album soon.
I could watch him just play guitar and talk like he does here all day
This permanent impromtu public free enjoyment of the guitar is a true delight my fríend!!, Most grateful alivie viewer.
his rendition of in a silent way was beautiful
I really get what he is saying about under playing being the sign of a great guitar!! My Gretsch is like that because the tone is so beautiful!! Almost sounds piano like so I find myself playing slower and less notes just because it can do that and sound so damn good!!
Moving On and Getting Over starts at 6:38.
"Oh edge of desire...yeah!" Goes into one of the most difficult riffs ever...
Love it ...first thing out of his fingers was some country licks! Proper tele sounds for sure. My telecasters and strats fight for attention daily ha ha!
i love how he´s like oh i´ll show you some PRS news alright when somebody mentions PRS News
love hearing him play D'angelo stuff
+Chad Price what song was it?
+winslow wong First groove was "The Root", second jazzy latin riff was "Spanish Joint". D'Angelo is the MAN
When he played D'angelo i squirted from my ears
What song was it?
+Thomas Craig (fg4tommy) Spanish joint
give him a stick and he will get you a great sound out of it.
he doesnt need a ryhtm guitarist :D
Even though his rhythm guitarist is 10x better than him! haha, I can't remember his name but I've watched videos of him, he's a monster!
+Clayton Murray Zane Carney.
That's it
there is no better in art
+Clayton Murray In what way is Zane Carney better?
That 15th fret shit made me smile -- totally digging it.
Looks like he is rocking the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak? Such a beautiful watch
Yep, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calender
+Chris Cassidy Yes it is. This watch is just gorgeous ..
He has a number of Big Pilot's too, which I believe are up there among his favourite watches.
Mini Forklift Ⓥ yeah I watched the Hodinkee interview with him and he loves some IWC
John's crazy about watches. He knows his watches, not like other celebrities who just buys it for the "fashion"
JM is the man
wow if someone could tab out this little version of slow dancing in a burning room that would be great
Jesus he's good
you sound good as always
tone genius
Cool to see him in the room Frank senatra recorded new York New York in East West studios
9:27 covered in rain
6:46 and from that moment moving on and getting over was born
