  • Tugs was a short-lived sister series to Thomas & Friends that I recently was able to complete and take a look at for myself. Shocked to find it to be such a quality show, I wondered what exactly caused this series to stop so abruptly at the end of its first season.
Today, we take a dive into what exactly happened to Tugs and The Star Fleet!

TUGS deserved better than to be cancelled after 1 season. It's such a well-crafted show. So many elements work so well, the theme song, the diverse characters, the beautiful sets. Such a shame we never got to see it meet its full potential.

      There’s a rumour out there that the scripts from the cancelled episodes were later rewritten into episodes for season 5 and 6 for Thomas and Friends. personally I can see vibes from tugs within the dialogue of series five and the ascetics of the tone it was going for at that time;
      A perfect example: Stepney Gets Lost ( 1998 )

I completely understand that sentiment. That’s why I recommend watching the episode ‘High Tide’ first, where trains are more prominent and you still get a good idea of the characters and setting. And the bridge scene ... is ... just awesome!

It's really ashame TUGS was cancelled because it's really a great show and I wish there was more of the sister show. Heck I have a theory for one of the reason why TUGS was cancelled, I believe it was because Thomas (the original series) at the time was very popular among kids so it likely to have take all of the attention away from TUGS to leading it to be cancelled. I don't really have anything to back up my theory with but I still think it's probably possible.

Never watched more than the outro of Theodore Tugboat and only learned about Tugs this year, due to TTTE nostalgia. I'm steamed over what Mattel did to my childhood with AEG. Some of the people from Tugs/TTTE worked on Theodore Tugboat, so it may bear resemblance to those sister shows from that.

    ----
I've often imagined how a TUGS revival could've been springboarded off of a Thomas crossover.
Thomas is at Brendham, hears a certain hooter and sees Ten Cents bringing in a ship. Thomas asks who he is and where he's from so TC explains that he's on loan to Sodor from Bigg City Port for a while.
Maybe Thomas could be spooked by how TC can turn his head.
This idea was meant to be during the CGI Era but it can never happen now cos of the reboot.

"...or if Mattel would purchase and ruin it too and make a shitty animated remake about it, and honestly at that rate I'm kinda happy it ended when it did..." You must not be aware that Sunbow Entertainment licenced the use of the TUGS footage from Robert D. Cardona and reused it for a show called Salty's Lighthouse back in 1997.
They basically dumbed down everything about Tugs to appeal to a preschool audience. They changed some of the characters names, some male characters became female, and the Star Tugs and the Zero Fleet weren't even rivals anymore. I remember watching it on PBS when I was young, but looking back on it now I'm starting to question my life decisions. I don't think it's near as bad as what Mattel could have done, but it's not too far from it. I'd tell you to run a CZcams search and see how bad it is for yourself, but I'd rather see you step on a Lego brick while barefoot.

Tugs is so underrated. It deserves as much respect as Thomas the tank engine.

I feel like people also sleep on Theodore Tugboat, and also only compare it to Tugs instead of it’s own entity.

Question: Do you think, like Big Mickey, the Tug characters should have appeared in Thomas & Friends? Like during Season 5 to 7 when the people who created Tugs were still working on Thomas, or perhaps in the good old Brenner Era? I could actually imagine a Thomas Special where it retells the events of certain TUGs episodes

I would haved loved a tugs and classic thomas and friends crossover. I wonder if some of the events in tugs were based on true stories to.

4:24 that isn’t big Mickey. it doesn’t look anything like him , not to mention they were still making tugs around the time of season 2s production and no tugs props appeared until season 3

Good video but I just thought I'd point out that the still you showed is from *The Diseasel* which is a series 2 episode and before Tugs was made. We didn't see the crane that was used as Big Mickey in Thomas until the third series.

I thought TUGS is recorded between 1987 and 1989? Simon Nash was only 16 at the time when he voiced Ten Cents. Surely he wouldn’t sound younger than what he normally sounds.
