    Shout out to Kyper for his prescient analysis after the Monday conference calling out Dubas’s tactic and then calling out the details to unfold with Shanahan. The team owes you on that. When you loose that much in the post season in this market your bargaining position should be called out for what it is.

    in the end, even after Shanahan's presser, it is all speculation about the details of things not working out for a new dubas deal.
    Personally, i don't think he spoke about his family using it as a play chip - i think, he was just overwhelmed by the situation, the ups and downs of finally winning a round in the playoffs, and then almost being swept.
    This might be the best in the end for him and the leafs.

    Said the same thing when they got Tavares. We had Matthews and Kadri at center. We did not need a 11 mil center . Maybe a 11 mil d man but still we had the big guys to sign why crunch the cap like that and he had to sign him for 7 years to match the sharks who offered him even more money. Huge Dubas fan but single handedly the worst move he has made, and the no move… it’s tied our hands. And Matthews and Marner would automatically never take anything lower than 10 or 11 ever because their second center who’s on the decline is making so much.
    Also if he listened to Shanny and didn’t talk on locker clean out day he would still have a job. Just like Kessel (twice), Kadri, Bozak, Schenn possibly Freddy this year and many others Dubas will take his revenge with a cup

Anyone will be a maple leaf for 14 mil by 8 years. Or even worse 13 for 3 and he makes even more in 3 years. Commit and give us a chance to win like Crosby did. That is a captain and a leader. Knew he could make way more but took less for the team. He was highest paid still deservingly but he didn’t go overboard cause he wanted to win.

    He has the Penguins job-was likely on par with salary offered to him by Toronto. So he staged this entire week… playing family card… then coming back with an outlandish request for higher salary. It he got the salary request then he won having a high pressure job but getting paid a king’s ransom. If it got rejected and then let go-well it gives him the “right” to go get another job that he already had lined up and didn’t have to say I am choosing this other organization. Instead he had to go since Toronto fired him. Dubas is not a good general manager, but he is an excellent Machiavellian individual.

    See I think the first thing management needs to say is, We have 1 goal. Winning the ultimate trophy in sports, the Stanley Cup. Nothing else matters. If your goal isn’t the same and you’re not 100 percent committed to that goal you don’t belong in this building.
    No more of this we’d be happy just to win round 1 crap. That crap maybe not what they said directly. But it’s certainly the impression in the press.
    Shanahan needs to go too.
    The goal is the CUP!!!!!! Nothing less.

    Dubas had a $4M/yr deal on the table. He played those family games, then demanded $6M-$7M/yr with full autonomy for 5 years. I think Shanny felt betrayed and it no longer felt like Dubas was committed to the organization. It's as if Dubas's mindset was similar to a few of the players. Just there to collect a paycheck instead of hungry for success. I think that cemented Shanny's decision to cut ties, and I think it was right. And I liked Dubas, but it's obvious his build will never win. Change is needed.

  • @bajjanitor
    @bajjanitor Před rokem +7

    To me it seems like Dubas thought he is Matthews, the irreplaceable franchise cornerstone. That when he answers the question if he wants to re-sign with "maybe, I'll have to check with the family, they haven't been too happy about me playing here", that it would cause a screeching halt in whatever the boss is doing and they'll do everything they can to make him re-sign. When in reality he is Nylander, and if he answers the question in that way then the response of the GM would be "okay, then I'll get on the phone and make sure we find a good team for you". Overvaluing himself, and not understanding he is replaceable.
    The contract Dubas had drawn up might also have been something outlandish. So that he would be let go instead of being the one who wouldn't sign a contract. No idea how that makes things better for him but who knows.

      @@dylanr8481 "You sir are delusional. Dubas put together a great team."
      Sure, and Nylander has played great. Still completely replaceable if he says he's not sure about wanting to play in Toronto.
      "If you want to blame anyone, you should blame Shanny. What does he do?"
      He's the highest employee in the hierarchy, right? So he's coordinating and having the final say in all decisions. Making sure that people like Dubas proceeds in the direction the owners wants them to.

    • @kevinb2844
      @kevinb2844 Před rokem

      That is an interesting perspective that I briefly thought about as well. In some ways-it seems like Dubas kind of purposely got himself fired by 1. Not signing the contract; 2. Publicly state his potential intention to potentially “step away” 3. Don’t communicate with your supervisor after the press conference for an entire day… then have your agent contact him with a likely counter-offer that had to be outlandish for Shanahan to only have a brief conversation about it…
      I am a Flyer’s fan that casually follows other teams . My impression of Dubas from afar is he is an actor… he projects all of that passion in the booth knowing the cameras are on him. I also think getting this prestigious job without the background gave him a sense of entitlement and an overvaluation of his abilities. I have visceral reactions to some people and my initial reaction to him was someone who is Machiavellian and manipulative who spends more energy cultivating his presentation to others as opposed to allowing himself to be vulnerable in the sense of really learning the job and becoming a better GM. The move for Tavares highlights this in my opinion whereby I know Toronto fans were celebrating the day Tavares “came home” and that to me is the one move that hindered this franchise from truly building around their two younger stars.
      I do respect Dubas’s manipulative and Machiavellian nature enough to predict he already has another job lined up-which is why he orchestrated his firing this week. He likely figured-I want this other job which will give me less headaches, but hey let me ask for an outlandish amount to stay here and if they actually give it to me-I will win anyway…

      So is it money or more time off ? More time off will not shut offer new off.

Shanny knew Dubas wanted to come back when Dubas' agent presented the new offer. Dubas knew he was doneski when he didn't hear from Shanny after presenting the new offer so Dubas panicked and sent Shanny the email.

    The era of smothering players with huge contracts for having accomplished nothing near the goal yet... What an upside-down management style. I wonder if it will ever get back to the time when players are REWARDED for their actions, and NOT their "potential"? For that matter, it seems the era of TEAMS has vanished as well; few players want to win as a team - they want themselves to "win" that contract, and to hell with the rest of the team. There is no "team"' there is no hunt for a Stanley Cup anymore; there's only looking out for #1, MY payday, and if I happen to get lucky and attach myself to a club that wins it all? BONUS! (NOT priority). We live in the age of ENTITLEMENT.

    Kyla Dubas has what? A wife and two kids? And he's a multimillionaire (or should be unless they have some spending issues)..
    They talk like he's the first guy to ever have such a "tough" job as GM.
    This sums up Dubas' tenure as a GM rather poetically... despite the fact that I still think the family thing was just a bargaining chip to get a better contract.. (which sounds like it is exactly what happened)
    One word. Do ya know it?

    I think Shanny didn't like Kyle's conditions of wanting more power, think about it, he was gonna extend him. And Kyle as a GM should have certain power or else he can't do his job. Dubis knows Pittsburgh is looking and possibly wants him , so he and his agent give the Leafs conditions and Shanny doesn't like them cause they over step into his space. Simple as that.
