Thank you for doing the easiest to understand beaded handbag tutorial!! im excited to get my supplies to make my first ever beaded bag. Thank you again i liked your video and im a new subbie!! Have a great night!!!
Your video is the best one I've seen! Your instructions are so clear and concise. I like the way you make the beads in separate rows..it's less confusing this way, and allows less string to be used at a time. Can't wait to try this! Thank you for making this video.
For this beaded bag design, I used a very thin bead string. I would recommend using the .45 mm thick bead string that I shared in the description. It will give you a boxy shape that will stand upright when you sit it down.
Wow. Thanks so much for this. I'm definitely going to check my stash. I probably have most of what I'd need. This is a great way to use up a stash! Your style of teaching is wonderful. Very easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time
Wonderful tutorial! Have a few questions. How much this bag cost to make in total? Also, do you have any websites/stores to purchase these beads at a reasonable price? Thanks! Side note, it would be wonderful to see you make more of these bags if possible with different designs and patterns :) Would love to see more videos like this. Lots of love!!
Thank you Jane! I used slightly more than 2000 beads to complete this beaded bag design. I purchased the exact beads that are linked in the description for about $40, and the clear bead thread was $10. So the total including tax was just over $50 and it all shipped to my doorstep.Feel free to check out my website for more detailed information about this particular project. The link is in the video description. Bag making is a hobby of mine, and I am currently working on a few more project ideas. Do you have a request for a specific bag pattern that you would like to see?
Here are the exact same beads I used for making this tutorial. When I do this ripples appear on the “sheet” of beads. It doesn’t lie flat. Do you know why? Do I thread them too loose or too tight or what am I doing wrong.
I believe that you are threading the beads to tightly. There is a very fine line between tight and loose beading. When done properly, the beads will lay flat.
going to try this out soon but wondering if you have any helpful links for the colored beads! having trouble finding the right shape, any recommendations?
Appears that the original link I shared has expired. I have updated the links in the video description box. These rondelle beads look the same amzn.to/2KEzJWp Let me know if you have any further questions.
Upcycle Clothing Designer i have just started making it! Using 8mm beads, but I am just slightly making it smaller by using around 6” sheets. I will let you know how it turns out!!
I used 250 each 8mm rondelle clear crystal beads. I made 3 each 9inch strands and then connected them together with the connector bead technique discussed in the video. Once I finished then flat rectangular bag bottom, then I connected that to the bag sides using the connector bead technique. I still recommend using the .45mm bead thread that I mentioned in the video description.
How would you reccomend finishing this bag? I used the ticker thread and the bag looks great but the threads keep either untying or getting caught/scratching people because it is so thick. Can you recommend anything? Thank you
A bit of super glue will go a long way. Tie the knot and secure with super glue. Hide the knot on the inside of the bag so that it is out of sight. It shouldn't be exposed on the outside.
So I made a large rectangle for the bottom of the bead bag, and then I attached the bottom to the sides using the connector bead technique. Does this answer your question? Please let me know if there is more instruction that I could help you with.
Thank you Jennifer! I’ve only been able to make this bead bag and I share the basic method to link beads together. I’m sure you can use these method to make different shapes and bag types. Are you referring to the handles? Yes I made them double the length of the bag width. However, you can easily lengthen the handles to become shoulder straps or make it a crossbody style by attaching one handle to the sides of the beaded bag. I recommend using even thicker bead string if you are going to add more length.
Hey! Could you explain me a little more how you use the small bead straps? I’m trying to do one but unfortunately with different beads, I’m confused now. Will deeply appreciate it :)
Yes of course! Did you look at my website? I included step by step photos and detailed instructions for you to follow. fashionwanderer.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-bag-from-scratch/
@@FashionWanderer Yes and it’s perfectly explained, I have all the pieces but can’t understand how to put them together 🙈 but I will try to fix it heheh
Hi! i’m using the thread that you included in the description but it won’t seem to straighten out like yours and is really curly so my beads won’t lay completely flat. any advice on how to fix this? thanks :)
I started this bead bag project by making test swatches to verify the thread tension. Is it possible that the bead thread is too tight? There is definitely a fine line between too tight and too loose. I would love to help you diagnose the problem. Please share your thoughts with me!
Thank you so much! ❤️ Ya the beads I used were plastic, they are just referred to as crystal beads. I don't think that the bead size matters, but I do think it's important to have rondelle or round beads. If the beads are oval shape then I think you would have difficulty making a bag with this beading method. So I believe that you could totally try this bag design with larger or smaller beads.
I’m onto making my second bag like this (and having so much fun!). I was just wondering whether you had any advice for making them more structured. The first one I made turned out very floppy but I would like my second one to be able to stand up on its own. Thank you :)
Upcycle Clothing Designer - I’ve made quite a few now and selling them :) I think the best thing to do is use a thin fishing wire. With the jewellery wire, if you have your phone and maybe a few other things in the bag, the strap can snap and it also pulls the beads which can distort the shape. I think the best thing to do is to make a 3D strap which is two lines of weaving attached at the sides to create a tube of beading. If you also use the 3D method down the sides, at the base and around the top, it creates a much more structured bag :)
Continuing the handles around the bottom makes perfect sense to add support. Great insight, I would love to see how it looks. Would you mind sharing a photo with me?
does it hold the weight of your cellphone, wallet and idk powder and lipstick? That's what worries me haha the tutorial made it very easy to understand, thank you!
First I made a base using clear beads. Then, I used the same connector bead technique to attach the base to the side walls of the bag. Hope this helps! Please let me know :)
is there a way to create the purse so that the straps do not pull and sag as in the picture. also the bottom seem to protrude down. if there a way to make it so it sits flat on a hard surface.
Yes, I have only made this beaded bag one time and this is the beading technique that I am familiar with. You can also weave one continuous beading thread instead of the row and connector bead method that I used. There are many excellent suggestions in the comments on this video. My tips and takeaways: I used a thin beading thread. Use a thicker bead thread. I ended the handle at the bag opening. Continue the straps underneath the bottom of the bag and to the other side to add support along the bottom. I connected my rows with beads. Weave one continuous thread the entire length of the beaded purse.
I used a thinner beading thread when making the video. In the video description, I recommend a much thicker beading thread. That thickness will produce a much stiffer result.
Hi, the beading thread you recommended from Amazon is fishing line wire which is stiff, won't lay flat, curls and is just difficult to work with. Can you tell us which thread you are using in the video?
Hello, I used a Fireline product. The exact match no longer exists. I shared a similar product that is also recommended for crafts, beading and bracelets. Beading thread is the same as the thread used for fishing. ... However, if you are buying the fishing line version, be sure to buy braided line.
@@FashionWanderer I bought the one from your link and it really curls and is unmanageable even when i give the beads more room. I've done it several ways and the thread even thread very loosely does not allow the beads to lay flat at all. I would recommend another thread that is not so stiff.
The beading thread is the type that I used to make this bead bag tutorial. The beading thread needs to be thick and stiff in order to support the weight of the beads.
I just finished making this. I tried it with .45mm thread and at first they were all curling but once I got a better handle on making the tension as tight as possible before tying the ends. The only problem I am having though is it won’t stay square. The sides keep going inline with the front panels so it is more of an oval with a rectangular bottom. Not sure what I did wrong. While I was connecting the sides to the front panels it just became one long panel and would only stay on a right angle on the corners if I bent it but once the bag is full it quickly softens the corners. Is it supposed to stay in a right angle during assembly? It is definitely not as firm and angular as the Susan Alexandra ones but it is beautiful anyway. The .45mm wire still didn’t make it firm for me. The corners are all a little soft. The string did pop off on one connector row even with 4 knots cause the knots are so big with the ticker wire. Luckily I made the bag so I knew how to repair it with one bead removed to create slack to knot it then did a full repair at home. Total cost to make was $51Canadian. I ended up buying 2 bags of assorted colours (900 beads) and 2 bags of clear (950 beads) with lots left over but the bags had so many colours I didn’t want and not enough of the colours I wanted. I also used 2 60metre tubes of wire (had to redo a lot of rows due to wrong tension and learning curve on creating a pattern I liked). Took about 15 mins to do each row of 3 by the time I got the hang of it. I may try again and se if I can get the corners to stay firm and angular since I have so many beads left over in other colours. Any tips would be appreciated in that. If I can’t change the corners I would just make each front panel 5 beads longer and skip the whole extra side panel creation step and then connect it to the smaller bottom rectangle and bend the front panel 5 beads in and it would be the same as what I ended up with but less connecting.
Great share Amy! Thank you for taking the time to post this for others to read and understand what they are also getting into. Sounds just like everything I shared in the video.
I am really happy that you liked the tutorial! 😊🙏🏼 This beaded bag was a really fun project and I learned a lot during the process. I look forward to attempting another project using my leftover beads. 💕
I used .45mm Clear Beading Thread - amzn.to/2Mwrw4D I included all of the details in a complete tutorial with step by step photos and detail written instructions: www.fashionwanderer.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-bag-from-scratch/
It took about 75 yards of clear beading thread to make this beaded bag tutorial. Furthermore, I used a thinner thread when making this video and would recommend using a .45 mm thicker thread for more structure and durability.
You can use smaller or larger bead size, I don't anticipate that to be a problem. I would think that the shape of the bead is fairly important when following this method. I used 8mm rondelle beads.
Has anyone successfully made their purse more box shaped? I made two, one with thicker, stretchy cord, and one with fishing line with no stretch, and neither of them sit box shaped.
Did you try the thread I recommended in the description? In the video, I shared that a much thinner bead thread was used. I definitely wouldn't use a stretchy cord because that would just make the bag sag even more. What tension fishing line did you use?
@@FashionWanderer Thank you so much for your response :) I used an 8lb fishing line, 0.26mm. It is quite thin, but I tried a thicker line and the knot wouldn't stay. I have not tried the line in the description yet - I was curious to see if anyone had success. (Also, thank you so much for your video!! I refer to it often 😄🙏)
Thank you for sharing! 💕 Glad I could inspire a fun DIY bag project. Please share if you solve the problem for the look you desire! I'm sure others in the audience would love to learn as well.
I just finished making one with the thread in the description (non stretch, .45mm clear nylon wire). It is still pretty floppy by comparison to the Susan Alexandra bags but will stand upright on the base. The corners won’t stay at a right angle (they round out) and the sides bend slightly with the straps. When empty, and fiddled with it looks great and stands firm on a table top but once it’s full and you actually use the handle it starts to bend and soften. The knots are also so big they pop open and snag on things (even if I spin them inward they spin back out and are at risk of popping open). I tried a .6mm wire and it was too thick to knot properly so I have no clue how Susan Alexandra does it lol. I still love the bag I made and am so proud of it but the .45mm doesn’t seem to be the answer for super stiff bags...or at least it wasn’t for me. I also tried .3mm and it was the same as the .45 in terms of firmness except the knots stayed together better and it was easier to bead with. I would make another one if I could get it to be as stiff as Susan Alexandras if anyone figures that out.
This beaded bag took me about 10 hours to complete. I completed the project over the course of a few days by spending 2 hours at a time. Beading doesn't take much time at all and is a relatively peaceful hobby. It was actually much harder to figure out the design pattern, understand beaded bag construction and also calculate materials needed to complete the project.
Thank you for your quick response! I have another question. I’m just starting the first row of my bag and notice as I’m adding beads, rather than laying flat my bead row is kind of curling up. Am I putting too much tension in the cord? Or will the rows flatten out once they’re all done? I don’t want to be doing it too tight or too loose. Thanks again!
The bead rows should lay flat the entire time. If the bead rows begin to curl, I believe that the bead strings are too tight. Place the beads on the string, and then tighten the tension to secure the row in place. All the bead rows should lay flat when assembling the beaded bag.
Thank you! After some trial and error I realized the problem was that my thread, which came off of a smaller spool was not straight enough. I started running a flat iron over my pieces of thread before adding beads and it completely solved the issue I was having. Thanks again!
Beverly, I used close to 2000 beads to make this beaded bag. I got 1000 clear beads and 1000 assorted colored beads. Check out the website link for detailed pictures and instructions. Hope this helps.
1000 pieces of clear 8mm rondelle crystal beads. 110 pieces of green, red, aqua, dark blue, light blue, dark purple, light pink and yellow colored 8mm rondelle crystal beads. 55 piece of dark pink color beads 8mm rondelle crystal beads. The colored beads came in an assorted bag of 300 pieces, so I highly recommend organizing the beads by color before you start beaded bag making.
You will need about 1200 grams of beads to complete this project. I didn't weigh each bead before starting, but I did use over 2000 beads to complete this beaded bag pattern. Hope this answers your question.

Thanks so much for the amazing tutorial! It’s been such a fun project!
I am really happy that you liked the tutorial! 😊🙏🏼 This beaded bag was a really fun project and I learned a lot during the process. I look forward to attempting another project using my leftover beads. 💕
How much does this bag cost to make? And how many beads do you need?
I used 2000 pieces of 8mm beads and it cost $50 to make this diy beaded bag from scratch .
How long does it take to make a beaded bag
Takes a day or two to make a beaded bag, about 8 to 10 hours total.
what string do you recommend ?
I used .45mm Clear Beading Thread - amzn.to/2Mwrw4D
I included all of the details in a complete tutorial with step by step photos and detail written instructions:
www.fashionwanderer.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-bag-from-scratch/
How much thread do you need for this bag?
It took about 75 yards of clear beading thread to make this beaded bag tutorial. Furthermore, I used a thinner thread when making this video and would recommend using a .45 mm thicker thread for more structure and durability.
Does it matter what type of bead you use? Is it okay to use any as long as it is 8mm?
Amy, we greatly appreciate your lengthy shares. 💕 Your personal experience is bound to help others with their beaded bags as well.
Fantastic tutorial ❤️
I will be making one for myself ASAP. I’m curious, how long did this take you to complete?
Thanks in advance!
Great feedback that is really helpful for others! Thank you for sharing!
For the bottom of the bag. Did you use the same count for the beads? ?
Yes, I made 3 separate beaded rows and attached the large bottom sheet to the sides of the bead bag with the connector beads. 5:55
Thank u 💜
So... i just finished mine 🥰💜
Yay! I love the color combination you chose... It looks so pretty!
Thank you for sharing! 🥰
How many gm i need bead?please, tell me.
I used about 2000 pieces of 8mm beads to make this diy beaded bag
Hi! Since u use crystal beads, it is heavy to carry it?
They are called crystal, but are actually made of plastic.
Yes there are about 2000 beads in this bag pattern, but it is not difficult to carry.
@@FashionWanderer oh. I see. Thanks. Can't wait to make this bag💙💙
Please share your bead bag with me when you finish!
I would love to see how it turns out! ❤️
wow
Thank you 😊🙏🏼
How many bads did you use? Thank You
Beverly, I used close to 2000 beads to make this beaded bag. I got 1000 clear beads and 1000 assorted colored beads. Check out the website link for detailed pictures and instructions. Hope this helps.
@@FashionWanderer Thank you so much
How did you join the second part
Which second part are you referring too? I talk about using a connector row 3:55 to connect all of the 3 bead rows. Does this help?
What is this stitch called?
I used Peyote stitch to make this bead bag. Hope this helps!
@@FashionWanderer thank you 🙂😊
Of course, I'm here to help ❤️
How much the total of each beads color?
1000 pieces of clear 8mm rondelle crystal beads. 110 pieces of green, red, aqua, dark blue, light blue, dark purple, light pink and yellow colored 8mm rondelle crystal beads. 55 piece of dark pink color beads 8mm rondelle crystal beads. The colored beads came in an assorted bag of 300 pieces, so I highly recommend organizing the beads by color before you start beaded bag making.
@@FashionWanderer thank you so much 🙏
We provided very clear directions and step by step pictures on our website. The link is at the bottom of the description.
What was the total gram of the beads that you needed to make this bag??
You will need about 1200 grams of beads to complete this project. I didn't weigh each bead before starting, but I did use over 2000 beads to complete this beaded bag pattern. Hope this answers your question.
Where do you buy your .7mm beading thread?
Here is the beading thread that I used to make this bag:

How much beades used?
I used over 2000 pieces of 8mm rondelle crystal beads to make this beaded bag design.
Hi, love this - so detailed!
Would it be possible to use say 6” sheets instead of the 9” ones for a smaller bag?
Thanks :)
That sounds like a great idea! Please share the results of the smaller beaded bag with me when you finish! I would love to see how it turns out! 😘
Upcycle Clothing Designer I will! Thanks so much again for the video :)
Thank you Ellie! 🥰
Amazing !!!
