    I recorded on that console I worked at Sound City when that board was delivered. Nights when there wasn't anyone booked I would record friends or experiment on mixing ideas. Good times back then.

    There is something to be said for good old analog gear, and I can think of no better place, or no better hands, for that board to be in. So cool to think how many songs that have touched and changed lives, were mixed on that board.

      Indeed, Nevermind was one such album recorded on this very desk. Did you ever see "Sound CIty", the doco Grohl made on the studio? You get to see the removal from Sound City and the refit into Grohl's studio 606 of this Neve console. Quite a feat. Then the Foo's did their next album on it - sans Pro Tools.

    A Neve is the Rolls Royce of consoles, but that particular Neve must be one of the best ever. The 70s Neves are the best. 80s Neves started to copy SSL and they're just not so good. But that 8028 on which they cut Nevermind must be the best gear to cut a rock record ever.

      +TaylorJ ∆ I love Analog and I love Digital but alot things bugs me about technology and future of storage of recording. One thing that boils my blood to the max is that if record in digital domain very likely that you may not able to playback the recordings due to coding for new software and program another is sound quality , Digital audio has got better since late 90's where the highest resolution is 24 bits / 192 khz which is great but lack in character in sound dynamic range,details,warmth and accuracy of capturing sound that analog is great from the geko. Its cool that their plug-ins of Analog emulation in DAW that sound like the real analog gear like Universal Audio is the best at Analog emulation since the company makes analog gear but its not authentic , I would rather use UA Plug-ins in live situation then studio. Software scares me the most since High Res Audio or HD audio been around since Pro-Tools evolution 15 years ago its enable to make autotune sound real as human voice which is hard to tell if its real voice or computer. Only way to find out is live or find proof its real performance. Analogy I can say about Analog vs Digital is Digital enable to fix anything from performance to make a superstar while Analog you are the performance and everything is real that makes you a superstar. Not a manufacturer superstar !

      +Andy Mahasongkham you have a point with storage. I mean, you can see it with digital photography. I don't know how many photographs I've lost because of HD malfunctioning, cameras stop working,...However, I still have all my "analogue" photographs and negatives...Yeah, I could be more careful with backups, but then again, you didn't have to do 4 backups for every photograph in the old days.
      Now, I also lost lots of music since I began recording digital and that is a nuisance. However, the sound quality for home studio owners like myself is a miracle. The turning point was when in the mid 2000s producers who were used to professional tape started saying "I don't hear the difference anymore", or "there's a difference, but it's so minimal that the convenience outweights the inconvenience".

    • @michaelbauers8800

      +Andy Mahasongkham No matter what you store on, in the future it may be dead tech. CDs, mini discs, cassette tape, reel-to-reel, VHS, 8-track, DVD-audio...all subject to death. CD pretty good though, because it's current, and there's a billion players on the planet for CD (at least.) So probably not a bad format to archive to.

    The thing that leaves me kind of wondering is why didn't Dave just buy the studio, redo the place and just keep going? Like he said he moved the board just down the street. They talk up the studio room as being the best in the business even though buy mistake. Why not keep the two together?

    • @acarlovonsexron1994
      @acarlovonsexron1994 Před 5 lety +6

      This seems to be a common complaint, but I imagine there's a good reason for it. I'm guessing the Skeeter family, who ran Sound City and own the property, just weren't willing to outright sell the lot. After Dave bought the board, they leased it out for a number of years to a guy who redid the building and used it privately as Fairfax Recordings. Now it's once again known as Sound City, though without the Neve(s) (Rick Rubin apparently owns the 8078 from Studio B) and a lot of the character of the original facility. The original studio was admittedly pretty dark and dingy, with brown shag carpets on the walls and a worn out wood floor, but it had a vibe. Now it looks sterile, everything is brightly lit and white. That is a crime in itself, imo.

      Because he already has his own studio the 606. Like why is he going to have two studios on the same street? It would counter productive to build a studio and then 6 years later just buy another one for its console, when he can just buy the console.

      Probably less than a hundred of this circuit design but at some point you have to define what a 'Neve' desk really is, as there were many different circuit designs. Granted Mr Rupert Neve spent a lot of time 'adjusting' the early designs to get as 'sound' that he was happy with but you also have to consider which speakers and amplifiers he was using when 'auditioning' his designs. And the mics and sound sources of course. As he was a musician in his own right that would influence what he wanted to hear.
      ONLY the people he worked with in the early days can really say what really went on. He was not infallible and of course made some mistakes. There are many desks that have been designed and made after Rupert had left Neve the company so where do you place Rupert and Neve (as separate entities)? Rupert himself was talented in his ability to combine concepts ahead of others, one that stands out was his proposal for slide faders (made in Gwent).

      +merqury5 you got two out of three right. rolls royce engines are the most reliable engines in the world, in airlines all over the world and rockets to space, they don't fail. but in most things when you spend lots of money and lots of time on something, it works. and you are also correct, it does the job it was meant to do. maybe with less maintenance than a rolls.

    Yet the Foofie Fighters still make pretty boring music. Their early albums were great but with age, they shifted into a sort of generic pop rock band, just like U2. Yeah they work hard and yeah Dave is a legend due to his contribution to music but I just have to honestly say that the music they make nowadays is nowhere near the creative spark Dave had as a drummer with Nirvana and his first two Foo albums. So in short, Dave is just a really wealthy man buying toys, fooling himself and others into thinking, this alone will create some good melodies. Don't get me wrong, their music is technically squeaky clean, well engineered and not revolting enough to turn off the radio but it lacks "soul".
