My dad bought me the uncut german Generals version back then. I was the happiest 13 year old for a moment. And I still play Zero Hour Online. What a masterpiece.
The game takes me way back to my first LAN party, good memories! You remember the debate surrounding "Killerspiele" and how they cause violence? Those were different times! :')
I loved playing generals as a kid, and I legit didn't know about how controversial it could've been back then to be released so close to the iraq invasion.
"The Chinese generate money through hacker farms and by ignoring environmental agreements to sustain their rapid industrial growth. Propaganda towers make sure their subjects continue to think the way they are supposed to. In the game, this is portrayed similarly" *2-second pause* Caught me off-guard.
Really enjoyed this Review! Also basically everything You said is true! You could have mentioned the phenomenal soundtrack though. I wish ea didnt murder the franchise! Love to get a sequel
I too would like a sequel, but I doubt it would be nearly as fun as this one because they wouldn't dare to provoke anyone. You're right about the soundtrack but honestly I wasn't even conscious of it untill you pointed it out!
Enjoy everyone. I'll be putting up more videos this summer so give me some feedback and let me know if you like the direction I'm taking with this channel.

I am almost never played the original Generals missions. Most of my gameplay was on Zero Hour. The game had one of the best military soundtracks. The unit promotion system existed in Red Alert as well.
It would've been more thematically fitting if China could build hydroelectric dams instead of nukes as their superweapon and when the timer finishes you can unleash a giant flood on your enemies. It would have the largest yield area but with the drawback of possibly hurting your own units unless you micro them to high ground or garrison them in tall buildings or evac them with helix helicopters. That actually happened with china purposely against the japanese military in 1938. They have only recently proliferated nuclear weapons (apparently) compared with the U.S. and Russia it just doesn't fit their style of gameplay.
I doubt the Americans would not have invaded Iraq even had they been told about the dismantling of the chemical weapons program. The true reason for the invasion of Iraq has always been the fact that Iraq began exporting oil for the Euro. Which was a huge slap in the face for the petrodollar, considering Iraq was believed to have the worlds largest oil reserves at the time. The objective always was to remove Saddam and replace him with a more "agreeable" government, which privatized the Iraqi oil fields and sold the drilling rights to western oil companies. It was also supposed to be a show of force for any other resource rich nation that would dare ditch the US Dollar.
People who said Red Alert or Tiberium series were the best clearly never play Generals. Generals of all three Command & Conquer subseries is the most relevant and relatively immersive, yet its still a game. A perfect balance, I might add. Instead the rather unique but a tad weird side bar, Generals uses the more common bottom bar. Instead of the typical two sided (not counting Yuri's faction In Yuri's Revenge), the game uses three factions. Instead of janky FMV + CGI except for the news section in Zero Hour, for the first time all cutscenes uses in game graphics. This game is truly a mirror of present real life event, unlike Red Alert or Tiberium which is like shadows. And the in game fund uses literally US Dollar, a straightforward design choice instead of Tiberium or Oil/Iron ore.

Cancelation of command and conquer generals 2 alone is proof the first game couldn’t be made today.

nukes are old and dirty tech in this game.
True I suppose, but probably impossible to implement gameplaywise
would be cool though

I loved the propaganda quotes:
"the virus is from eating bats"
"we have it under control"
Also the pre-censor german Version is absolutely beautiful! Love the voice acting.
"soll ich den Knopf drücken?"
Damn I remember getting to play that when I was still a child at one of my uncles LAN parties :')
Heutzutage geht so voice acting leider nicht mehr :(
