The ad placement timing, in the middle of a story about a kid being crucified, was a bit jarring
That can of Coca-Cola looked more tasty tho
Simon! Operator Starsky complimented you and promoted the video in his community tab!
@@scallowify Took the words right out of my mouth. I'm the queen of bad timing and accidental face plants. I would put that badly timed ad for protein powder right on par with my reaction to a commenter's misspelling of "Holodomor." Can you do an enema with AG1? You should try, please try. I don't pay for Premium to be shoved ads as soon as a video starts. Maybe an AG1 enema would help you understand that.
A phrase from the USSR: "if you fail, make sure no ones knows you ever tried."
Assigned policy is well understood by our trusted Comrade Putin in our KGB division, he will retain that for decades to come! 😅
Secrecy is his forte!
Boy that sounds typical. Cover up failure.
Or as said in western countries, "Fake it until you make it".
According to Vlad Vexler who was born in Moscow and lived in the Soviet Union, Soviet propaganda tries to convince you that something is true while this other thing is false.
Russian propaganda (of the Russian Federation) is different in that it is obviously false by design; it is supposed to be obvious that what it is saying isn’t true.
The goal is not to galvanise and incentivise you, but to make you passive, tired, weary and unwilling to engage or become invested in politics.
It sounds like the slogan of any terrorist.
Russian propaganda isn’t only meant to misinform. It’s also meant overwhelm you with blatant lies until it’s impossible to tell reality from fiction. You become so tired that you end up picking whatever narrative to believe because it’s too exhausting to find the truth.
The war is about Territorial Integrity vs Self Determination. I did the research given I'm a American veteran and remember how we were lied into going into Iraq. I saw the tower collapse, made me join. I might not be able to change my governments policies but atleast I know the root issue now. Problem is no one is talking about it.

A friend of mine, a Brit, was living in Slovyansk back in 2014. He and his wife left the country. By 2022 they were back in Ukraine, living in Kyiv. His mother in law is very elderly, she goes to the Russian Orthodox Church, and at least before the war, believed all the Russian propaganda.
Imagine that - hiding away from Russian bombs whilst hoping that the same army launching those bombs will come to 'liberate' you.
I remember a news story from the early days of the war. A Ukrainian woman, I believe she was living in Kharkiv, had a sister living in Russia and she called to tell her about the war. The woman’s sister would hear none of it, simply labeled the statements as false, demanded she not discuss the war with her again, and then hung up the phone.
@@holyfordus sounds like a typical conversation between my mother and I when I try to explain why Trump isn't a good person 🤦
She is not very bright.
Propaganda works.
Sadly media really creates division and us vs them mentality. That's why news should tell all and people should be open to hearing uncomfortable things.
Even the Russians use the old “won’t someone think of the children!?” line. When will people realise that most people saying that are full of sh*t?
Honestly that line will be forever effect one of my family members said that thought the line was garbage but only realized how effective it was when they had kids of their own due to what they believed to be a parent’s subconscious desire to protect there children at all cost
its not like the Russian people have ever had a government that wasnt totalitarian in nature and didnt smother all opposition. Like what...the brief period following the fall of the Tzar...before Lenin obtained control completely.
Do the Russians say that before or after they kidnap the Ukrainian children?
Guy from putleristan here.
Kids here are treated like crap.
It was reported on France24 that the Russians tell Ukrainian in conquered territories that Americans and Azov troops are coming to r*pe and m*rdertheir children. The ICC alleges this what Russia said as they kidnapped over 1,000 Ukrainian children and took them into Russia.
Favorite line of russian propaganda in response to being called out for blatant lies is “we will never know the full truth”
When you think Fox News or CNN is bad, Pootin says “Hold my vodka” 😊
Fox has a direct line to Russian propaganda don't be fooled. In the war fox and tucker specifically are actually the US only television cleared to run on Russian stations because he uses most of the Russian goverments talking points in his coverage
Don't forget. Russia Russia Russia. They are going to shut down the power grid in Fargo
Mainstream media are all about a narrative and spin these days. Hence why the internets is the go to place for decent info.
Both countries (have and continue to) lie through their teeth to get what the want and hide what they don't.
It's a sad state of affairs
Rose-tinted glasses. Have you seen the stories about the Qanon shaman being toured around the capital? CNN said they were going to try and kill people. Many protesters thought the doors were opened for them to come visit.
This is an example of a story thats told from many angles so much so that you dont know the truth - quite literally the Western equivalent of Russian propaganda styles.
The MIA thing is a bit mind-boggling, too. It would be so embarrassing if 200k trips died in war but it's somehow less embarrassing that avoiding them that they've simply lost track of 200k troops. That seems worse to me, cause MIA is not only could they be dead, but it also means "we are absolute shit at knowing where soldiers are or what they're doing" when it's in the thousands
Its deliberate manipulation of stats and a calculated move from the Russian state. By simply stating their troops are 'missing in action' they avoid talking about troops who've really been killed in action (which would have some effect on war support at home) and as a bonus the government doesn't need to pay the families of the dead, I mean 'missing' troops any compensation money for their loss which means the government can save said the money for the war effort. On the one hand its a cunning strategy, on the other hand immoral and evil but its not like the Russian government cares about morality unless they can use said moral narratives for their own benefit.
I assume a majority of the MiA troops are explained away by claiming they had deserted. Shifting the blame off Russia and onto the "missing" trooper.
@@Zeppathy which should bring into question why so many of their soldiers are deserting

The most hilarious thing I've heard from the pro-Russians CZcams comments is when they tried to downplay the retreat from Kherson city by referring to it as just a "town"
To be fair the comment isn’t referencing the video, just stating an opinion on the topic
Actually, the retreat from kherson was done in good order to consolidate the front line and resulted in Ukraine still suffering 40,000 kia in the process due to artillery strikes.

To paraphrase an old quote, "There are lies, damn lies and state run media."
Which is all the media based in russia atm.
Too generalized.
I've lived in Australia and Canada which have national (state) broadcasters. Both the ABC and CBC are rated top class for factual reporting although some folks feel they tend to be a little centre-left politically.
The state controlled Russian news media are totally different. They resemble more what the news media looked like under Hitler and Goebbels. From the many Russian street interviews I've watched, they have been remarkably successful in embedding Putin's values and sewing confusion among in ordinary people - you really can't blame them for supporting him and the war given how misinformed they are.

Fun fact about the "arrested Ukrainian Nazi assassins" on Russian TV:
As they displayed the "proof they were nazi assassins", there was an interesting bit of items laid out on the bed. Three copies of the video game Sims 3. What apparently happened, was that some propaganda director asked their subordinates to include 3 sims in the evidence. They were probably thinking about sim cards, sort of like how a spy might have 3 to make his calls harder to trace or pattern etc. But I guess his goons didn't quite get that. What's funny about this, is that they filmed the three copies of the game, and it was aired.
😂😂😂
Let me get this right... they arrested some nerd gamers ?! Lmao !!
That is absolute comedy gold! 😆
To be fair, watching propaganda time with vladimir solovyov is some of the most fun you can have when learning about how backwards Russian society is
Athur Rehi watches Solovyov for fun, and TVP World (a Polish news channel) frequently uses Solovyov for their Break The Fake channel (the TVP anchor Jonasz is hilarious. He once stated that Russia claiming to be a mighty military and then bungling in Ukraine is like “Walking around calling yourself a pro player in CS:GO and then getting destroyed by a 12-year old in an online match.”)
The old clips from Solovyov are priceless, the ones where he said something like that it would be crazy to think Russia would ever want to invade Ukraine etc. His son is also in London if I'm correct, it's hard to tell if he is true believer or simply a good actor doing a role. Or maybe he started as an actor but started to believe his own lies at some point.
@@cyberfunk3793 Vlad Vexler stated that an interesting aspect in regard to propaganda is that if it goes on for long enough, the propagandist - despite knowing that it is false information - may start to believe it himself.
Solovyov and other Russian propagandists have been lying and making non-stop threats of military action against Ukraine's allies for over a year now. They may have already started to truly believe that the Russian military is still "mighty" and could easily defeat the combined forces of western Europe.
How do you even watch it?
I never thought being threatened by nukes everyday could be funny until I tuned in 😂😂

Peter Pomerantsev wrote an excellent book titled "nothing is true and everything is possible" on the overall state of modern Russian society. It was sort of a combination of memoir and anthology that tried to provide a taste of the new breed of lunacy that has taken hold of the nation in the post-Soviet criminal oligarchy era. "This is not propaganda" is probably also excellent but I haven't finished it so I can't say for certain. Noticed him mentioned in this video and wanted to stump.
Well truth be told, they were always a bunch of dumbskis with a deeply ingrained serf mentality. This lunacy isn’t suprising.
'nothing is true..' is really awesome book
Great timing on this upload.
Five days before, Putin was galavanting about Mariupol in a "surprise" visit. While Putin's talking to grateful Mariupol residents, grateful he hasn't ordered they be killed should they dare to disagree with anything he says, an unseen woman in the background shouted:
"It's not real! It's all for show!"
I had been wondering just how effective the Russian propaganda machine was and seeing Putin's security detail squirm and scramble to find the source of the voice was something to behold.
That wasn't Putin. He has a body double. The real Putin doesn't let anyone, not even his own ministers get within 5 metres of him
"Putin's body double"
I would love to see that video. It sounds hilarious.
It was also funny to see some of those "residents" wearing earpieces and bearing similar resemblances to other potential Kremlin actors from previous videos.
That woman broke the rule of Vranyo; yes, it is for show and is a lie and everyone involved KNOWS it, but you are supposed to pretend that it isn’t.

Simon has turned into quite the deep-state propagandist over the past few months. He should volunteer to join the international brigade instead of cheerleading other sons being sent to their death. The Deep State propaganda is even more outlandish than the Russian versions. Russia entered Ukraine after NATO executed a coup against a neutral duly elected president in the Ukraine. Is Simon still defending the Biden terrorist attack on NordStream of does he still think Vlad donned his scuba gear and blew up his own pipeline instead of just shutting the valve.

This is a really great video Simon. Have you considered covering Russian disinformation operations in the West, and elsewhere across the world?
The use of organisations like Glavsnet, the promotion of 'biolabs' nonsense, spreading fake photos of Zelensky with cocaine etc is all very interesting. Very few people really believe it, but it serves the cause of creating doubt and sowing discord in countries supporting Ukraine.
The bio labs were real, just not what Russia made them out to be. Some are being used for gmo crops while the rest are Soviet bio weapon labs being dismantled by a collation of nations.
biolabs first were created by qanon and russian propaganda took it from there
@@tsartomato Russia did spread nonsense about bioweapons labs in Ukraine because they knew it would drive a certain section of Americans and Europeans to oppose aid to Ukraine, but Qanon conspiracy theorists were not the first to come up with these sorts of theories. Russia has accused the US of manufacturing bioweapons in Georgia (Sakartvelo) for years.
Russians are also using lots of bots and now even AI edited videos and images. Like altering a video of Finland's prime minister to appear as if she is calling for war with Russia.
There was also a news story recently of social media accounts spreading basically the same message with different variations in Finnish. "Nato ei voi tallentaa Suomea" meaning " NATO cannot save Finland". Except that in Finnish there are many translations for the word "save" in depending on context. The bots had chosen the word "tallentaa" which means saving as in saving a file or video. So a better translation to english would be "NATO cannot record Finland". Otherwise the messages had very good Finnish and Finnish looking profiles so even a native speaker couldn't have spotted anything weird were it not for that one translation error on all the messages.

Both Russia and Ukraine has had hand in creating eachothers nation, but that does not give Russia the right to take Ukraine by force, or vice versa. If that was the case than the UK would have the right to conqour the USA because they were once Brittish colonies under direct Brittish rule and I don't think the Americans want that, and Mongolia would have the right to take most of Russia because large portions of it was once apart of the Mongol Empire, and even though a large portion of Russia's asian population has close clutrual and ethnic ties to Mongolia, I don't even think they want to be conquerd by Mongolia.
no one had any hand in anything it's just separate knyazdoms just like in europe
like how prussia deutschland and osterreich are supposed to be grossdeutchland but instead are all separate states
That's why they very often go with the story that Ukraine didn't exist and never existed, just like ukrainian nation, history, culture, language ("russian dialect") etc. They keep inventing justifications for that. Like they were saying that russian themselves invented Ukrainians, then in was Austria-Hungary military plan against Russia, recently it was Lenin who created Ukraine (which pootin himself says and writes in his "historical articles") and now the whole Ukrainian identity were agitated by the US gov.

I have been speaking russian my whole life. I am from Kyiv region. There has never been any oppression towards me, nor my family. Now I am only happy that I know the tongue of my enemy, while fully switching to Ukrainian language.
Someone may ask me, why have I not been speaking Ukrainian already. Well, it is because of russian influence in the media, in my school curriculum( it is a usual public school), in my university(until 2014) and, of course, because both of my parents speak russian, which is one of the effects of soviet union. Ukrainian language was not popular in my surroundings, so people around me mostly used russian.
Our culture was being erased pretty much. I am ashamed that I considered Ukrainian to be just a funny language and something alien to me as a Ukrainian citizen myself(which is absurd) but this opinion itself is what russian propaganda was making people think.
So what russians came to protect, they have destroyed.
Ukraine will prevail.
The situation you describe was evident from the start of the war. Putin's decision to turn into a cartoon villain got so many people to drop Russian and pick up Ukrainian one can't help but laugh at that irony. With the war casualties and the self-inflicted cultural damage combined, he'll wake up to a world with far fewer Russians than when he started, and he'll only have himself to blame.

This is why I love Simon's channels. His team seem to do a crazy level of research on every topic. Another very popular channel which will go unnamed has for months brought up how Russian people are sick of the war, don't believe in the war, are falling out of favor with Putin, and on and on with no evidence, and it bugs me because a tiny bit of research shows this to be far from the case. They believe in the war,, their leader, and the news that they are force fed.

This a truly great video. Great research. I would add that the Kremlin Chinese-backed propaganda is strong everywhere. Right now a big chunk of the European left and ironically, a big chunk of the US Republican party (the christian nationalists and populists) are very lukewarm towards Putin
BS. The left accuses the Right of being pro-Putin as a dirty political trick. Right wing governments like those in Central Europe have been the most anti-Putin voices in the world and except for a few nutjobs, the Republican party fully supports Ukraine as well.
The fascist right in the US loves Putin. A "strong " leader who hates LGBTQ people and is a nationalist psychopath. They want him for their daddy so badly.
It's crazy isn't it? Everything is so hyperpoliticized in the US today that a party will side with Russia, China, Iran and North Korea...
China has spent BILLIONS on propaganda here in the US. It's gotten to the point that we have Chinese propaganda from the Chinese government news paper being put on record in the halls of Government.
We have Rage Against the War Machine protests that are literally sponsored by the CCP that are attended by US politicians and political pundits from both the far left and the far right attending.
Russia has its own Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones types. Even its own faux-patriotic Toby Keith and Lee Greenwood government sellout music artists.

There was no crucified child Nikita, only orc propaganda.
Alleged crucifixion lacking any video, photo, or supporting evidence beyond the testimony of one singular person. But still a poor spot to put it.
Jesus, kinda a rough transition into the ad 😂
15:43 famous austrian painter, mister 😂
Thank you!
"Let's talk about the story of the crucified Ukrainian boy but first....AG1 SOILENT GREEN! OH YEAH!" 😒
Literally the worst ad cut he's ever done.
Maaan. Editor should perhaps have told Simon "yo you may want to redo this one."
That ad read halfway through the story of the crucified boy was certainly... a choice.
One of the worst ad choice I've seen
2:35 - boy gets crucified
2:38 - buy my green drink!
that's a meme fore 10 years
Don't you hate it when you click on a video to hear some guy wittering on about drinking green gloop, and you find you have to plow through a load of news and information to get to it?
I kind of got lost at 1 point. I forgot that Simon was talking about news media outlets in Russia and not Fox News in the US.
CNN
@@basemandog which network is currently facing multiple billion dollar lawsuits again?
@@basemandog uh oh found the hillbilly Putin bot
@@kyle-ld2gh They even say they expect their viewers to know it’s just entertainment. Fox News is next level.
@@DiviAugustithey officially say that in court as a defense against defamation cases. The problem is people actually do take what they say seriously and treat it like the gospel, something they are keenly aware of.
In reality they know their audience is a cash cow and know how to profit from them.
Thank you for letting us know the way that the Russian government is bending the minds of their people. It helps us to understand otherwise unbelievable popular support in Russia for the war in Ukraine.
I'm Ukrainian who constantly monitored russian media and propaganda for years now and even I couldn't believe it. Crazy effective, internally at least.
“The rules are simple: they lie to us, we know they're lying, they know we know they're lying, but they keep lying to us, and we keep pretending to believe them.” ― Elena Gorokhova
@bscott8 Exactly. Reports of Russian support are verified how? I lived in Russia during the early Putin years. Some of the older folks were believers, but anybody under 40 (at that time) had already wised up a bit. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the conservative numbers have risen, but it's probably like here: hella vocal supporters of the regime, then everybody else. Most people are used to being afraid to speak too loudly there. "The nail that sticks up gets hammered."
what do you think of the propaganda in main stream media? things like the ghost of kiev or the evacuation of azovstal?
@@randomdude2832 I'm not familiar with those. The only information that I have on this topic comes from this video.
Its a "special military operation", you can't be charged with war crimes if you call it not a war.
"More about these claims of terrible atrocities in a moment, but first a word from our sponsor..."
Never change 👍
An ex-shipmate of mine is a Russian propagandist embedded with the Russian army for the last few years. If he wasn't still so monumentally bad at framing, narration, scripting, editing, sound capture, and public speaking he might actually be good at it. Pat Lancaster still has videos up on his YT from right before the invasion, talking about the invasion never going to happen and it's all western fear-mongering. He's been caught staging scenes several times and his "journalism" is never anything short of deepthroating Putin's agenda. I have a tinfoil theory as to why he became so very pro-Putin, his wife was a Russian honeypot. He met a Moldovan woman in Tokyo while we were stationed in Japan and they started dating almost right away, his uncharismatic ass was always the wingman, never the player, so this seemed like a standard green card-hunting foreign national and we thought nothing of it. He worked in electronic warfare with radar and missile defense with a Top Secret clearance, he knows better than to take Russian state media at it's word, yet now he's repeating Kremlin talking-points like it's fact.
Thanks for his backstory. He’s seriously up to his neck in it. And I don’t envy him if he ever returns to the states. Much like his ex-partner Graham Phillips who was sanctioned by the UK last year.
@@klubberzvonhatzenbuhl563 He was back in the states around 1/6 pretending to be a neutral journalist there as well. The FBI is aware of his activities, whether he was on their radar before I alerted them about him or not, I don't know.
@@Galaar - Well, if he was in that crowd at the Capitol he was certainly in friendly company. I pity him if I ever come across him.
If Putanistan put as much effort into their illegal war as they do with trolling CZcams comment sections, maybe we could start believing half of what they claim
Like all the trolls complaining about the sponsorship making it clear they've never seen another video with Simon it it 😆
"Putanistan"
Spanish ans Italians: 😏🤣
I wonder if this host or Hank Green is on more shows on youtube
Wow, you should probably put the ad at a chapter switch, because that wasn't exactly great.
Really great episode, here's to hoping some Russian with a VPN see's it too
And that is why !? Another empire dies. So long Russia! Its been no good to know you! Goodbyeeeeeeeee!
That is a very weird choice of spot for an ad break

NGL , caption showed "....Putin was a dick potato" 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! 💙💛
10:30 So Solovyov is the Russian equivalent of Tucker Carlson?
Worse.
considering that i never heard of him then yes
because no one listens to his bullshit either
Tucker is not as bad
Solovyov is an extremely highly paid presenter- I was going to say journalist, but just couldn't, as every single word that he utters is a lie. He is not the equivalent of Tucker Carlson; Carlson lies for money for a successful private tv station that preys on undereducated Americans, Solovov's instructions come from the highest echelons of the Russian State. The similarity between Solovov and Carlson is that they both lie compulsively and without conscience for money, lots of money. They live at the lowest levels of sentient humanity
Very bad placement for the ad, it seems a bit too... cold.
Like Gorbatschow said at the time: „our power comes from the perception of our power.“
>talks about an alleged (see false) homicide of a three-year-old boy
>Cuts to a random healthnut shake commercial
So you're outing yourself as an idiot and a propaganda troll 😆
