    Funny story about getting a group together I got a group of 7 people. We all knew each other and are friends. So I ask expecting one or two to join. All seven go "that's a good idea". That's how I got a group of eight people without even really trying. Only one person had played before so we were all clueless. It was fun.

      Same basically. I ran one session on Roll20 with two other players and one spectator. Then the next four sessions was an absolute wave of players inbound.
      Now I run my campaign Westmarch-style except with fixed time slots and cast. Got like four new converts to D&D. Half of them turned into giant minmaxing munchkins.
      It was great. Personal favorite munchkin: Guy who plays a sorcerer that is nigh untouchable, but once the sorcerer is touched the sorcerer goes *pof*

    Quick clarification about Adventurer's League; it is not hosted by Wizards of the Coast. Adventurer's League is an independent volunteer-based organization that WotC does everything they can to support without actually being a part of or operating. Puffin is still absolutely correct that it's a great way to find a D&D game, meet other players, and make new friends. But please don't go to one believing that the person running the game is a WotC employee or anything; they're a regular person who volunteered to run adventures because they love D&D and they want to share it with people, and any extra stuff they bring to the table beyond the adventure (like miniatures, maps, etc.) is entirely a product of their time and effort. Your experience from one table to another will likely change significantly because of the DM, but it will almost always be a good time.
    Also, the D&D Starter Set really is the best way to learn the game.

    • @Paraboxify
      @Paraboxify Před 6 lety +5

      It's got a simple as hell yet comprehensive module, the basic rules, basic DM advice and basic monsters, comes with a set of dice, it's like 15$. It's great for testing the waters. Downside is, everyone and their dog has played it and it's not super meaty. Of course a good/invested DM can beef up the subplots and bring the town of Phandalin to life, but a group entirely made up of newbies or with an experienced player DMing intially isn't that likely to do that.
      Core rulebooks (Monster Manual, Dungeon Master's Guide and Player's Handbook) and a single set of dice will run you around 160$ MSRP, is a lot of (rewarding) reading material and doesn't net you a module. A DM screen is about 15$. Once you sort of get it all off the ground and people get familiar with the rules they're ideal, and you can start spicing up your game with other supplements (Volo's Guide to Monsters, Tales from the Yawning Portal, the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, One Grung Above, the Tortle Package) but for an initial buy-in, it's risky, even digitally.

    • @isenokami7810
      @isenokami7810 Před 6 lety +1

      Flmabo Jesus While I like the game, I’m not confident about being a dungeon master. However, some of the do’s and don’ts ProJared has pointed out (and even one of Puffin’s videos) have given me ideas to subvert these issues.
      For example, “avoid the cutscene.” Okay, I’ll have a “cutscene” describing the boss who hasn’t noticed the party yet, and they can interrupt and start fighting at any time. However, if they sit through the narration, they’ll learn about a chandelier or something that they can use to instantly kill the boss.
      Furthermore, we all know that no one likes the lone wolf, that guy whose character just sits in the corner and doesn’t participate. I would love to see a game where a DM worked with a player on that: the party seems stuck with a lone wolf character, whose player even does his sulking separately from the rest of the table, only for it to be revealed later that they weren’t an edgelord, but a spy.

    You should make a video about how to interest others and get them involved in a session. I've managed to convince my friends to play, and have found sessions in which they've all left amazed by the game (this is mostly with one group, in which everyone was new to the game) but have also had certain friends in other groups who have had a hard time getting entertain and mostly go to the sessions for the company and food, but not that much for the game nor their characters (even though we've tried really hard to help him do a character he was interested in). This would be really useful!

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 Před 6 lety

      I might suggest you check out GreatGameMaster.com's tips on Player engagement...
      On the personal side, have you talked to those Player(s) who aren't engaging in the game? Some people simply don't seem to be "wired" for Role Play. It's alright too, of course, just not exactly going to be their "thing"... In such cases, let them come for the snacks and beer (etc)... and maybe some time down the road, they will (occasionally) surprise you.
      Sometimes, it's just not their "prefered genre" or "style"... I dealt with a guy who was "okay" with D&D, but he swore up and down he was big about improv' and loved Role Play... Everyone else around the table could sense his lack of engagement... AND then I opened up the Gurps sourcebook to do a mix between Magic and Technology (it was the only non-D&D book I had at the time)...
      As soon as the Steam/Cyber-Punk style scenario started to roll out this same guy was suddenly ON FIRE!... And the twist in that adventure was a Blast...
      So... maybe the bottom line is "don't be afraid to experiment" and just be tolerant of those who show up more for food and friends as long as they're not actively screwing up the game. :o)

      There's also Roll20. Both have their advantages. Roll20 is a bit... it feels more like a professional office setting, and TTS feels like fucking around, throwing dice at people, capturing the magic of someone 'accidentally' moving his character out of harms way when nobody looked with a dice throw.

Apparently it's ok for woman to have woman only groups but when a guy makes a men only group he gets a blog and makes a stink out of it.
      if i can find something else that dissing on men and woman equally i'd rather support them.

      If you can find someone that wants to run, you could possibly get one player from each game and start up a new group. If all the games you know of have 8 players, there are pretty clearly not enough people running games in your area, because 8 players is about the limit of what a group can handle, with 4 generally being considered ideal.

      Since you're a first time DM, I'd recommend a linear storyline (your players have fewer options, which means you have less work to be prepared.) I'd recommend Hoard of the Dragon Queen. When your players roll into town, they only have three or four options of things to do, in addition to random encounters.

      Transformers And Power Rangers Toy Reviews Forgive me, but I couldn’t stop laughing. I haven’t played much D&D, but I have fun stories from both my sessions. And my first story happened to be about a party I joined midway pissing off Strahd.
      So, I joined in the middle of a fight with wolves. We killed them, particularly with the help of a character who could become a werewolf, more than doubling his health. When they died, Strahd appeared... and the werewolf immediately attacked him.
      Bad idea: Strahd countered back and inflicted some sort of poison, and caught the guy in a headlock. He only survived because of the werewolf buff. At which point, the DM as Strahd said, “Would you like to try introductions again?”
      Naturally, the rest of the party was freaking out, considering options to save the werewolf, but mostly hoping not to die. As was I, of course: level 1, first session, would’ve sucked to die immediately. Strahd was kind enough to let the werewolf go...and he immediately attacked again and got himself in the same position.
      At this point, I remembered something: my Tiefling started with the Dark Hunter item set, which included some stakes. Stakes tend to kill vampires, so I thought I’d test something. I lined myself up with Strahd, and prepared to throw a stake from a distance, hoping to strike his heart. However, I wasn’t suicidal, so I asked if that would kill him. I needed a decently high Arcana stat to get an answer, and it turned out my character actually started with a high enough stat. That answer: no. I immediately said $&@& it and backed off.
      Thankfully, no one actually died. Strahd let the werewolf go again, this time leaving him unconscious. And it turned out the entire reason he was there was to invite us to his castle. All he wanted to do was give us a $&@&ing note.

    Okay to be fair I bought it as this is my first time as a DM and I have new players, I wanted a good story to build our world off of and the story in Lost Mine seems to be a good spot for my players.
    Funny enough I was right, it has made a good spot for me to create the world from, I've already inserted a few additional npcs for various reasons and my players aren't all murder hobos(my 8yo daughter playing as the rogue is, she has more kills than anyone else in the party and they only just entered craigmaw hideout). But the key thing so far has of course been they are having fun, they cant wait for each new session what I might bring to the table.

      I've had this problem for ages, ever since 2e. Now I much rather DM than just be a player :) still you could tutor 1 of them if you want. Prepare a simple dungeon map, a few monster stats for them to fill the map as pleased and help them come up with an adventure hook, a boss and maybe even ideas for puzzles. Finally promise them you're there to guide with the rules (but clarify that the DM always has the final say). You should have a rather passive character in that first session as you'll have a lot of knowledge of the adventure beforehand...

    • @BenRangel
      @BenRangel Před 6 lety

      I'm one of those players who can't be convinced to GM. I could tell you what it would take for me to do it:
      1. Give me a few games to warm up. You should continue being the main GM but try to give me more tasks. For example:
      * Make me play the role of an NPC for a part of the game so I get familiarized with talking to the other PC. * Make me design some dungeon where my PC will not be participating to make me used to how that stuff works
      * Give me a particular section of the rule book to study, to be the expert guide on that stuff, and I imagine I would be into it. (Way more than the intimidating taks of having to learn a bit of ALL the rules)

      well dming is pretty hard you need a few key things and your friends might just understand that they are missing these things.
      1. Improvisation
      2. Understanding that your players will fuck up your story
      3. Creativity
      4. Accepting that your players/friends will die or do stupid shit to die which might end in your campaign being ruined
      5. Letting your player make a backstory and adding that into story elements when you go over something that may relate to said character.

    Played my first D&D game today at a local game store. They were having a special for new players to try. I played as Gilderoy Fireheart wizard extraordinaire! I played him as confident and cocky as I could. Had alot of fun.

    I just got back from playing my first dnd game. We had a group of 7 friends, one was dm and we made our won characters before hand. We curved some of the rules and didn't really stay in character but that might come later on. We just had a bunch of fun and that's all that matters.

    Last year on 31 december my friends and I got together to celebrate new year. I just asked who was interested in D&D, and if they wanted to try it out. I had the books with me, and in pdf on my laptop. we were busy creating characters from 8 pm till 11.59 pm. and after shouting 'happy new year!' played our first session. It was a mess; someone burned half the party to death with a torch, someone else caused a donkey to explode into a fine red mist, covering the entire party in blood, and the entire session lasted about 2 hours before everyone minus one was dead. We have been playing D&D every two weeks now for a year, with the sole survivor Grishek making regular comebacks as a crazed old dwarf NPC. I can't wait to see what crazy things are going to happen this new years eve.

    Personal Tip:
    For modules, start with tomb of annihilation. Its simple yet fun, and is very flexible when you use it and want to add new npcs.
    After you get familiar with Modules using slightly more simple ones, I'd totally suggest Curse of Strahd, which is complex and amazing.

    Lost Mines of Phandelver is great. I have played it & DM'ed it; wish more people would play the Starter Set, fun and a great learning tool.

    you should do a "most entertaining (to the onlookers) death" video. Some of the groups i gamed with (back in the day) came up with some doozies. (Swimming through black pudding, trying to catch up with a ship by swimming out to it in full armor, trying to swing across a chasm of spiky deathiness on an unsecured rope, the tar golem, etc.)

    The module I would recommend people read is the Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Fairly straightforward with some twists and turns like a movie that is entertaining. Also, Hoard of the Dragon Queen is the easiest of the modules I have noticed since Curse of Strahd and Tomb of Annihilation are both open world campaign settings.

    Yes!! I used to have the Sailor Moon RPG, even ran a one off. It didn't play well, ended up using Big Eyes, Small Mouth. (Early 2000s)

    About a month ago I started up a D&D game at work with others on my team of technical writers. We play weekly at lunch in one of the conference rooms. Three of them had never played D&D before. Another guy and I just brought it up, asked them if they wanted to play, and the group was formed. :D
