I'm myself know how the general casting mechanisms. Just in case you want to know :
Casting audition, for example, audition for an anime cast is something that professional voice actors who belong to an agency can receive. But well, voice actors who's currently freelancers (ex. Hosoyan, OnoD) are also acceptable too, JUST IF THEY ARE CALLED OUT. This is not without reason, since the audition information is not disclosed to the public.
The sound directors will browse the voice sample in the agencies official website to find a suitable cast and so they'll send the cast call to some agencies. In fact, the cast call isn't sent equally to all agencies. The audition information is usually given to a large, long-standing agency, a reputable medium or small size agency, or to a well-known freelance voice actors. Anyhow, to get involved into an audition, the role of manager is very important. In a large agency that has managers who's has good connection with anime producers or sound directors, getting an audition offer is not a difficult thing. A manager is usually responsible for one or more voice actors (both for newcomers or experienced voice actors).
Sometimes, sound directors may ask for a specific name. But once again, auditioning doesn't mean you can be accepted right away. You have to meet the desired standard. As well as the sponsors and producers have a big role in the casting.

Matsuoka really deserved that many leading roles, i mean, his voice range is super wide, and amazingly despite those different tone, we can tell it's his voice.
i think he either falls into the hero or the pervert villain spectrum which is something he himself admitted. imo Matsuoka, Hanae and Kaji yuki all fall into the "they would sound awesome as heroes" archetype which maybe makes sense of the frequency of them getting the lead roles, but i dunno maybe its just me who thinks that

That means a lot. There's nothing wrong when Matsuoka has many job of voice acting nowadays. Then, many kouhai felt unfair why always Matsuoka get the MC role. But he said it's all from the producers, he just voicing it, not choosing the chara he want.
The producers knew the fans demand on Matsuoka MC voice since he's most relatable seiyuu
They do go for auditions for the characters that they wish to act as, and most of the time they get that role, other times the producer give them a different role than what they auditioned for. Apparently the producers are rather strict in their choice of actors, and tend to pick the ones they think is best for the role. Sometimes they do sent invites to certain VA to audition for a role, but its not a guaranteed job, some random newbie might apply for the same role and performed better in the audition.
Aqua Venus and even if that random newbie out performs hed still get shafted and left in the dust because the directors wants Matsuoka over him
Yes, and there's more to it. It's how marketable and popular the seiyuu is already. That's a huge factor today in them choosing who gets the role. Especially for a AAA anime.
It does take effort for Matsuoka's voice to reach the state and range we're all familiar with...

It's more than that. Giving it all is a part of it. What you say makes it seem like other seiyuu aren't giving it their all. There were other seiyuu from Matsuoka's generation too, but aren't as popular, does this mean they didn't give it their all?

The fact is, even within their circle, there is this misconception that you get to pick the role when you are "big", that jobs just come your way.
It is quite crazy to think that, even someone as famous as Kaji Yuki failed his auditions 9/10 times, and Kamiya Hiroshi still have to look for new roles on a daily basis.

It becomes really difficult for newcomers to get roles when the popular ones get all of them, this is applicable in many art based industries.
Look at Hanazawa Kana for example.
This doesn't mean it's their fault, no, of course, they audition, give it their all and the ones choosing make the decision.
The main responsibility lies with the ones making a decision. They don't always select the most talented or experienced ones, there's another factor that contributes to this. Their marketability.
The ones they know will sell more, will be selected. The ones who are popular, especially outside Japan, will be more likely to be selected for a AAA anime than a newcomer, who may or may not get the role, especially due to the competitive nature of the industry.
This reduces the chances for newcomers. At the end of the day it's business. They don't care about who's who. They only care about whose face will bring in the most money.
This was even more true earlier in the industry. Hence the age limit on seiyuu and idols. Not to mention that many male seiyuu didn't even get that popular before, only female seiyuu did, because their exposure was more comparatively and the fact that anime was more male-based industry.
Today of course, the age limit thing is getting less of a thing and male seiyuu are gaining popularity as well (still not as much as female though), due to many fans outside focusing on both and female anime fans increasing.
This still doesn't address the fact that newcomers do have it difficult, of course, nothing is easy when you first get into a field, especially if you're not as talented as the vets of that industry, however, the over-popularity of some seiyuu can affect the industry and I don't mean just the new comers, but also the ones who've been in the industry for a while but not as popular.
Today in the industry, Sugita, Matsuoka and Kaji Yuki are the most popular seiyuu, they've been in the industry for quite a while of course. But so have Shimono Hiro, Nakamura Yuuchi and Kamiya Hiroshi, yet they are only getting their popularity in very recent times, relative to the other mentioned above.
Of course I just chose those names as an example, and I purposely chose these because, these are the most famous names today, so now imagine how many other seiyuu you don't know about and what about them.
This goes for female seiyuu too. How many of you know who Ai Fairouz is? I bet not many, unless you look her up and find out she was the lead of the anime Dumbbell nan kilo moteru. She's gotten more roles recently, but she's still a relative newcomer because her career started late in life, imagine being in the mid-late 20's and just starting. Compared to Sora Amamiya, I bet everyone knows who that is.
I can give a lot more examples, but I think my point has been made here. It is indeed unfair for many seiyuu when someone is selected based on how popular they are and not just based on talent. All of the above are talented, but they have their popularity going for them too and they'll always be chosen over others.
BTW, Did you know why Matsuoka got popular? It was his relatable awkwardness and his (in)famous roles as harem MC. That's his claim to fame. This got blown up by fans outside Japan and even many fans in Japan. This added to his talent and he got a huge boost, compared to other seiyuu of his time.
The ones watching anime, put themselves in his place, their own insecurities were seen in him (or so they thought), and they made him popular.
But does that mean that other seiyuu from his generation don't deserve the roles because they're not awkward or relatable? That's the point here.
Anyway, I was just recently thinking about this, seeing how many roles Hanzawa Kana has compared to so many other seiyuu and it was in my head and then seeing this video, it came out in writing. I.E. The above is a tiny window into my head processes.

I totally get what Shimeno and Matsuoka are saying. It’s not they’re fault that they get a lot of roles. They just have more years of experience under their belt to hone their craft as seiyuus and casting directors see something in them. I also hope they’re work ethic inspires up-and-coming seiyuus to continue honing their own craft to earn them more roles.

@@racaphrandomshitpost9788 I agree with OP. Since his role of Tanjiro, Nacchan has been getting lots of roles. Like A LOT. He didn't even have to audition for his Falco role in AoT. He also starred in a TV drama recently and had a 1 hr documentary abt him aired. Add to that his YT gaming channel and his Twitter where he has more than 2 mill subscribers make him the most followed VA in Japan. Some even didn't know his main job is a VA bc they knew him as a gaming YTuber. And now, he even has more roles, in 2022 alone he is part of 4 of the top 10 animes where he has 2 lead roles (tanjiro and vanitas) and 2 supporting roles (falco and milo).
Not to mention, his other roles in other upcoming anime (9s, koko, etc.) Plus his involvement in music projects (paralive, milgram, honeyworks, b-pro).

To me Shimono-san is the HAREM GOD! (Katsuragi Keima sama!) And yes!! Shimono-san's voice range is literally HUGE! That's why everybody loves him! To me his range is far more huge than Matsuoka... Dabi (BNHA) --> Nai (Karneval)/Senri (Norn9) and yes, just like the producer said... Shimono-san is that one seiyuu who always put all his emotion at work (he can feel the wind) and can change his tone of voice in a single take... (I used to be a VA so I know the hurdles)
Nowadays matsuoka is the harem god, not only in anime but in real life. I get it you're bias toward shimono but saying shimono's range is far more huge than matsuoka's is a bit too exaggerated, i mean have you seen he voiced petelgeuse? shouta mitarai? Voice range generally speaking is more like high and low voice which both of them are very good at, which is why im disagree with you if you says shimono far more better than matsuoka. They never let Kito Akari say what she thought :( I'm sad about that, honestly I would have liked to hear what she had to say.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like when there are both male and female seiyuus in the same video, the men are always the ones speaking and even if they ask the women a question after they say like 1 sentence they keep talking over them. Again, I might be wrong bc I'm pretty new to this whole seiyuu stuff. Also might be a cultural thing I guess. But it just makes me sad, I think I'd rather listen to a male-only cast or a female-only cast so I don't have to see this kind of thing :(
Btw the way sorry if this came out wrong, I absolutely adore Shimono, Hanae and Matsuoka. Obviously Kito too. I just think they do it unconciously, but it's kinda sad to watch for me.
The senpai-kouhai thing might be at play here, but Natsuki and Shimono are generally really talkative so it makes it difficult for Akarin to cut in.
Akari Kito already got a of leading roles by the time she got Nezuko so the question is kinda unfit for her and would come off as conceited if she did answer, I think that's why Shimono cut her immediately

Meanwhile NTT Solmare's Obey Me has a cast of unknowns because the game was launched for the English market. Since a large chunk of the English market doesn't know or care much about seiyuu Solmare probably saved money by not hiring any big names. Now that Obey Me is out in Japan I wonder if the cast will start getting more jobs.
