  • Peter Crinnion, one of Durham Cathedral's team of expert stonemasons, shows us his progress on carving a new decorative cross which will be installed on the roof of the cathedral's South Transept, to replace another cross which was badly weathered. Peter's design for the new cross won a competition between the cathedral's stonemasons, and here he demonstrates the tools and expert craft skills he uses in his work. The hood Peter wears is designed to protect his face from small sharp chips of stone, and filter his air to prevent him breathing in the dust of the limestone he carves.
