My dad has two Farmalls, a '47 C and a '65 140. Other than rebuilding the generators and new points & condensers the motors are stock. Original valves, rings, seats, bearing. The '47 C has only had the valves adjusted three times in 77 years. The 140 once. And your right, they have straight pipes and sound great. Just pulled a cultipacker with the '47 yesterday. Ran perfect.
A 1970-72 4020 Gas is an odd bird, for one of the most popular tractors ever made by that color of green. By 1970 the 4020 was well liked as a diesel by users but it was no longer the top selling Deere by 72(surpassed by the 4320). I must say watching Ross work a synchro is hilarious. Being almost out of gas was a big problem with gas 4020's. The hand throttle stops at PTO speed unless you pull the knob out, foot pedal goes all the way through the rpm range.
I'm glad I am not the only one who had difficulty trying to figure out those Deere gear shifters. One of my relatives had a 1967 3020 gas in the late 80s and I could never figure it out.
When I first seen the title I figured this was going to be a carburetor video. I'll be, that aluminum square of sadness wasn't the problem. The mere sight of one of those carbs triggers memories of past trauma. You sure got it running nice with that new distributer. By ear none the less.
Years ago there was a farmer in my area that always had a 4010 diesel, then the 4020 diesel. Traded every year. Well in 1970, the local Deere dealer didn't have a diesel in stock, but, had a new shiny gas 4020 out front. He was hesitant, but the salesmen talked him into it by telling him you won't tell a difference. Ole Norman owned that tractor a full 2 months til the first diesel arrived and he traded it off on the diesel. He and anybody else that ran it absolutely hated it 😂
I have 1972 4020, that l could never get running right. It finally lost coolant and took out a main bearing. Luckily I found a 1969 diesel for it. The original problem turned out to be a worn lower bushing in the oil pump, the points could not be set properly. The diesel made it aa much better tractor.
Hi Ross , love the video just wanted to say I had a similar experience on my uncles 3020 it would run at times then just die , when I would try to restart I noticed it would fire up then die like in 20 seconds,I also noticed that the resistor in the ignition switch would turn red and smoke , anyway what I found was the plate under the distributor where the points are sittings was oxidized building resistance and loose connection , so I scuffed the plate with sand paper and all is great
Boy that is a rare 4020, you rarely see a late model side console 4020 in a gas version. That one is worth some money as a collector piece. Pretty nice one too.
Syncro range. 1, 3, reverse. 2, 5, reverse. 4, 7, reverse. 6, and 8. The reverse in 4, and 7 is actually road gear for mounted cotton pickers. Each range can be shifted without having to stop the tractor. The problem with those shifters is after fifty plus years of wear they don't shift well. We had a 3020 gas with a loader on it. We could never keep points in it and finally converted it to an electronic ignition. It was a completely different tractor after that. If a guy wanted to do something different with a gas 3010/20 or 4010/20 there was someone who was building a conversation from the carburetor to port fuel injection using a GM computer and injectors plus an intake manifold he made. His claim was 20% more power with 20% less fuel.
Awesome job thanks for sharing really appreciate your exclamation of how you diagnosed and fix the greatest John Deere in my opinion the 4020 beautiful tractor
Poor Ross and the synchro range trans is hilarious. However, it was a slick trans for the time and is easy to work once you figure it out. If he gets enough Deere’s with one breaking down at his place he may want a gallon of the Kool-Aid! 😂
The old synchro range transmissions are so easy to use and understand, I don't get why people have a hard time with them. That old gasser has one hell of a growl to it! Sounds so good.
Just my personal opinion, but unless the goal is a purpose built pulling tractor, i say leave them the way they came from the factory. Great video Ross.
I agree with you, there is nothing wrong with a gas engine, they were the first to be used widely in the farming industry. There's good and bad in any tractor, be it gas or diesel and that one sounds awesome. My son has one that's a diesel which I used a couple of years ago to do hay. Ran great, but it did like the diesel, I don't know how the gas engine does on usage but I would guess it's a quite of bit, doing hay that is. Great video Ross, loved the scenery and the run of the big JD 4020. Thanks and I hope you have a super day!
You should start Mechanics Without Borders! Just like the medical Drs., you work on any brand to give it a chance. I bleed Orange but I am glad to see these older units still running. Thank you so much for all the effort you put in to entertain us!
Ross, you and me agree on a good few points there. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with gas tractors. My dad has an 1850 gas and I love it to death. Wouldn’t have it any other way. The synchro range transmission leaves a lot to be desired. I was mowing hay with my dad’s 4620 and it was a pain in the kanootson changing speeds. I’m used to the pattern but it shifts hard and every other thing. I really could’ve used a hydra power or over/under. And lastly, we both love straight piped gas engines! I so badly want to put a straight pipe on my dad’s 1850 lol. He says you can’t stand it but he underestimates how crazy I am lol
I had a gas and diesel 3020s. The gas was a beast! It would pull 4 16s in heavy clay and not miss a beat! I would be squirrel hunting with the headlights!! It was a thirsty tractor compared to the diesel.
I'm with you on this one. If the tractor came with a gas motor keep it that way and same goes for a diesel. My small Deere and Allis are gas motors and they run great and I never have any issues with them. My larger Ford and Massey are diesel and I wouldn't want a tractor that size in gas, but that's my opinion only and mostly for the fuel economy of a 55 and 76 horsepower gas motor. That Deere you had there looked great, sounded great and would without doubt work in the field without complaint.
I have one of those. 10 to 15 years ago mine started going through a phase every 6 months where it would run like absolute crap. It’s a loader tractor and gets 12 to 15 hours a year. I would replace this and that and it fixed it until the next time. Finally after the 4th time I discovered that the condensers Deere was getting from China were junk. I put one in from NAPA, that was made in Mexico. I guess that’s better because it fixed the problem and I have had issues since. One of the older John Deere mechanics confirmed the bad condensers as he had one in the shop that he had just changed all that out and it still wouldn’t run right. After putting 6 new Chinese condensers on from there parts department, and not getting any to run right or run at all, he found an old one in his tool box and the tractor ran like it should.
You sure got the 4020 purring. Never ran a 3020/4020 gas...only diesels. I've got 2 gas IH 656s (one row crop/one utility). No cold-weather starting issues for doing odd jobs. Primarily do planting, loader, and hay work. Use a 1030 Case and my son's 1486 IH for our heavy work.
I also hate those stupid ratchet shift transmissions. I grew up with a 1850 with a Perkins in it and you can’t show me one single thing on a 4020 that’s better than the Oliver. Too many people just drink the Kool Aid Great videos keep them coming
I'm only at about 20:00 in so forgive me if you figured this out... That "no external resistor required coil" may be the problem. If the coil is powered by a resistor wire it needs a "yes external resistor required" style coil. Or it'll have weak/no spark.
My uncle had 2 4020's. 1 gas , 1 diesel . He drove the gas and my cousins drove the diesel, because my uncle was allergic to the diesel fumes. He would be throwing up after about 30 minutes running it. But he had no problem with the 4400 diesel combine.
From old white haired farmer I have 4020 gas and diesel got gas tractor to feed and plow snow in winter. Hard field work gas will.use 2 times what diesel will. In making hay or any light work gas tractor not so much gas used. Might let up on us JD boys lol enjoy your channel .
Ross an uncle had a 4020 on gas , could not get it to run rite. They found just a little play in the butter fly shaft. Replaced the carberator that fixed it.
The owner should never change this one to diesel. If it is factory, the crooked stick shifter would make it a ‘71 or ‘72. This would be one of the last big gas engine tractor Deere made outside of a very few 30 series. Not a unicorn, but not super common either. If the owner is having trouble with it jumping out of time, another poster had it right. The cam runs the oil pump and the distributer is run from the oil pump. As the engine wears, you get a lot of slop in the distributer drive slot and it is a PITA to keep timed.
I am interested in knowing the year model. It has the side console of a 1969 model and the slanted brake petals of earlier models like a 64 model. It must be rare. I've never seen a side console gas model. Absolutely beautiful machine. My first tractor was a 620 on gas. Yes gasoline !!! It could pull a five plow family bedder in third gear in heavy backland. Interestingly, a 4020 could only pull the same plow, but it was mounted on a 4x7 rear bar, but it could pull it faster. Good memories. Great video.
If my memory serves me correctly, the screw on type was prone to cracking, mainly due to people had a very bad tendency of over tightening those screws. If it didn't crack externally, would crack internally. 1 single bolt holds that panel in place Ross, if my memory serves me again, it's at the bottom of the plate, down by the foot platform. His alternator belt looks to be loose. No, you're in 2nd gear. All the gears are on the right side of the shifter, left side is the ranges. 1/3 R, 2/5 R, 4/7 (R if the gear is still there), then 6/8. Park is the only one on the left side. It's a syncro-range transmission. Sycnro's did have their issues, biggest issue is, you can easily put yourself into 2 different ranges at once if there's an issue with the internals where the shifter is. If you pull the black knob on the throttle handle and pull down, you'll go full throttle. The handle should say, pull knob to override stop. :) If the steering was up to par, you could take one finger, spin the steering wheel and it should spin to the stop either direction. JD next gens had the best power steering. Absolutely nothing wrong with a "gas" engine, in fact, gas in many ways are better than diesel. If the owner is smart, he'll add the 2nd battery box on the right side and wire 2 battery's so he has 24v start with 12v charge. Don't care, 6 cylinders always need that little "extra". Great video as always.
We only had gas tractors on the farm, the only green was Oliver. Looks like the left front tire is scrubbing the pavement a bit, maybe tweak the steering linkage.
Great video Ross, I wasn't expecting to see a 4020 on this channel. I just purchased a 67 4020 ps diesel, the engine was bad which I knew and am in the process of inframing it now. The tractor lived it's life here in Aroostook County potato country and it looks it. I'm in hopes some day it will look as good as the one here. I suspect it won't get that good of a resto but I will for sure try to come close. I'm not a farmer but have some field work to use it for. Just enough to keep it around after I retire.
Gas vs Diesel in a large frame tractor, they both have their pros, and cons. But when it’s a customers tractor, people telling you to convert it to diesel without the customers, permission, and money, is astronomically idiotic lol. Let’s hope those people never have the opportunity to run their own tractor repair business. I prefer Diesel myself, but there is nothing wrong with gas powered large frame tractors. They’re just thirsty on gas lol. I don’t know who designed the syncro transmission on the John Deere 10 and 20 series new generation tractors, but they must’ve been on some kind of LSD lol. It was popular during that time! Funny how that pattern hasn’t been used since lol.
Ross ,check out the dented smashed small green wire that was attached to the coil coming off of your old distributor,I bet that old distributor is still ok,a bad battery will act strangely as well
Ross, it's getting tough to find quality ignition parts for gas tractors. Some of the coils& points& condsers are pretty cheesy regardless of your color taste. Good ol cast iron marvel schebeler is best carburetor
I'll fix the fence to hold the animals....😂 We have a 3020 had and that was an odd bird too. It had a carburetor with a rubber diaphragm and that was always giving us sadness. BTW it has the same transmission and like it. But that's me.and I agree gas tractors built this country.
Look at all of the weight that has to be added to the deere and it still will not come up to the shipping weight of an Oliver. Plus with the fuel tank out front, the front weight becomes less as fuel is used so the balance of the tractor is always changing.
😁 Hey , Only 8123 4020 GAS were made witch makes it a collectable classic tractor. Great Job. Why does it have a resistor coil ? My uncle had John Deere tractors on his farm and loved ever one . thanks
I like the gas engines. They are easier for me to work on. I have my grandfather's Farmall B and I have had very little trouble with it. Thanks for standing up for the gas engines. Some people just don't understand originality. It sounded great. I'm not sure if the gas version was the same as the diesel or not. On the hand throttle, if you pulled out on the end of the lever, it would give you a little extra. Then it would be as fast as the foot throttle. Atleast it was that way on the 3010 series. Maybe they didn't have that on the 4020 series.. just a thought. Have a great day and I'll see you later.
Ross, id like to see you drive a 400 case dual range. But I think you would be at home, the transmission case used in 400,700& 800 with case-0-matic drive is very similar to what Oliver used with over lapping H style shift pattern
I feel the same way about gassers other than I can’t stand the straight pipe noise. A V8 is the only thing that sounds good with no mufflers in my opinion. Gassers are a little more finicky to keep running but mostly due to crap gasoline today and 50 year old plus wiring. Wish you could still get good ol regular gas.
All my old tractors are gas,my new one is a kubota diesel. I would like to put a gas engine in the kubota . The exhaust exits out the side and ends up in your face. Thanks for the video .
My dad has a 68 4020 that was a gas we used the hell out of it tell it blow up and my dad put the diesel in it from a 7700 combine and now it over heats because the motor is 6in longer so it don't get enough air on the motor need to change change the frame rails I think we should he put a reman gas in it be cheaper
You made the owner of the John Deere a happy person you saved the day again. Awesome job……
Diesel has its place and gas has it's place that's my motto grew up with both of them on the farm and loved running all of them
I'm glad I am not the only one who had difficulty trying to figure out those Deere gear shifters. One of my relatives had a 1967 3020 gas in the late 80s and I could never figure it out.

Hey the salesman got the deal done 🤣
Hey Ross,,gotta say,,pretty nice 4020. Sound was great,,and you seemed to be having fun with it😅😅😅
That 4020 they did a really nice job restoring it. Paint looks very nice
Yes they did indeed ! From the southwestern prairie of Minnesota.
Love the foot pedal on my 4020, wish my 1850 had one! Love the 3’ straight pipe on the 1850
I have 1972 4020, that l could never get running right. It finally lost coolant and took out a main bearing. Luckily I found a 1969 diesel for it. your right about the gas tractor I have a sixteen fifty gas tractor other than gas being expensive it does great
You’re right about the gas tractor. Great video. Thanks
Thanks!!
I love my 1550 gasser. When its 10*F and I need to run the snow blower it never fails to start.
I like gas tractor they always start in cold weather when they run
It doesn't matter they all break
.
I’d sooner have a synchro range than a quad range JD. Power shift was the cats meow…
I’ve never driven one of the Deere power shifts, but I’d like to to see how it was
Most of my hours with one was in a 4630 with a field cultivator ahead of the drill for wheat. It was great for that…. Smooth and fast
Those gas 4020s worked just fine. Beautiful tractor, and sounds fantastic.
There's always a convenience of having a gas chore tractor in the winter...
Hi Ross , love the video just wanted to say I had a similar experience on my uncles 3020 it would run at times then just die , when I would try to restart I noticed it would fire up then die like in 20 seconds,I also noticed that the resistor in the ignition switch would turn red and smoke , anyway what I found was the plate under the distributor where the points are sittings was oxidized building resistance and loose connection , so I scuffed the plate with sand paper and all is great
I agree with you on the gas tractors. They start very well in the winter. Good for a loader tractor!
Boy that is a rare 4020, you rarely see a late model side console 4020 in a gas version. That one is worth some money as a collector piece. Pretty nice one too.
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!

The power steering is hooked up backwards, with it turn on start mode, lol thanks BigAl California
The old synchro range transmissions are so easy to use and understand, I don't get why people have a hard time with them. That old gasser has one hell of a growl to it! Sounds so good.
Good video Ross. Good to see you got old John going again. Thanks for sharing.
Watching Ross the oliver man ride the struggle bus with the deere shifter is great entertainment!!!!!!
great transmission once you figure why it was designed that way
Just my personal opinion, but unless the goal is a purpose built pulling tractor, i say leave them the way they came from the factory. Great video Ross.
I definitely would keep it just the way she is, running beautiful.

Lol watching you shift the 4020. I was the same way the 1st time I drove my grandpa's 3020.
I love gas tractors. I grew up on a Allis Chalmers D17 gasser.

100% on the gas engine are great engines for there time
Starting to enjoy the Ross videos more and more. Something to be learned off every video even if it’s a Deere.
To be honest one of my favorite tractors we have is a 1750 gas narrow. Just purrs and has a ton of power.
It’s a Deere of course it died going down your driveway, tell him to get an Oliver 😂
I'm with you on this one. If the tractor came with a gas motor keep it that way and same goes for a diesel. And on todays episode, Ross learns to drive the infamous John Deere Synchro Range transmission 😂 People either loved or hated them things.
Great job ross fixing
I also hate those stupid ratchet shift transmissions.
I grew up with a 1850 with a Perkins in it and you can’t show me one single thing on a 4020 that’s better than the Oliver.
Too many people just drink the Kool Aid
Great videos keep them coming

yard art down with the deere

🤣 Thanks!!
That older trannie was in a lot of deere products and worked very well for years ❤
The trans is easy, just follow the lines. or just think of the outer disc as one lever (range) and second inside disc as the other (gear)
Beautiful 4020
They a very nice tractor
Hope get it running
Now you need to get your 2010 out. Thinking of getting electronic distributor for mine
Look at all of the weight that has to be added to the deere and it still will not come up to the shipping weight of an Oliver. Plus with the fuel tank out front, the front weight becomes less as fuel is used so the balance of the tractor is always changing.
What you thought was fifth is forth gear! Ross first cluster is 1,3.r second cluster 2,5,r third cluster 4,7 forth cluster 6,8.
The throttle worked the same.
That thing as got to be a holy fright on gas.
at the end of filling silos spark plugs on the farmall m were black muffler glowed red rusted out month later other than that i agree
All my old tractors are gas,my new one is a kubota diesel. I would like to put a gas engine in the kubota . The exhaust exits out the side and ends up in your face. Thanks for the video .
I grew up on a 4010 jdeere. Wish dad hadn’t traded it off
Ford 300 6 cylinder industrial engine,Great engine , Most problems are electrical, old wires and carburetors
Fine job ross
Ross I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of your videos with a full juiced battery 😂
Only real advantage ive found in Diesel engines is fuel system longevity .SEE
My favorite color is green
Awesome!!!
Well if there is any garbage in the tank it’s loose and floating now. Lol
When it's cold outside and I need a tractor to do chores with, give me a gas over a diesel any day.
Just start changing parts what does a distributor got to do with the carburetor. Either no spark or no fuel
I like Diesel tractors to but I'm not gonna swap any of my gas ones to diesel just because some internet keyboard warier said to 😂😂
You love John Deere and you know it 😅😅😅😅😅
🤣🤣🤣
