  • I decided to read another book by TJ Klune since I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea so much. Here are my thoughts on Wolfsong, the first book in the Green Creek series which is an adult paranormal mm romance. Let me know if you've read this one!

I read this book a few years ago and I loved it so much, that I bought the audiobook and listened to it as well. I'm currently on the 3rd book of the series and am enjoying it immensely. Another fantasy series of his that I love is the Tales from Verania series which is much more hilarious and campy, with gay dragons, even gayer unicorns, and gayness all around.
Yet another series I loved is the Bear, Otter and the Kid Chronicles which, despite the silly name, is very heartfelt. This one isn't fantasy but it follows the lives of the titular characters and how they become part of each others' lives.

OK I just had to come back because I FUCKING LOVED THIS BOOK. I had no idea this book existed until I saw fanart on tumblr and IMMEDIATELY had to read it. TBH at first, I was sooooo hesitant at first bc of the age gap and I was like....WTF IS THIS??? But thank GOD there was just a friendship growing there and no interest in anything sexual until much later when they're older but the i agree with EVERYTHING you mentioned- story, characters, and the writing......everything was beautiful and it hurt and I finished ALL of the books so far and waiting for the fourth one in october!!

    • @ConnorOBrien
      @ConnorOBrien  Před 4 lety +1

After I finished it, I saw your review on Goodreads and it gave me so much validation for my love of this book lol
The age gap was definitely a little uncomfy at first since we're following the older of the two and we already know they're going to get together. I'm so glad it didn't get gross.
I finished the second book since this, so I need to sit my ass down and film the review. I've been putting off Heartsong until I film it because I want no more new info until after. There are two short stories on his site/blog that come between the books if you're curious. I read Lovesong which follows a character during the first two books. Feralsong takes place between books 3 and 4. Don't know much about it because SPOILERS. I'm pumped to see how he wraps up the series!

Glad to see you enjoyed it as much as I did. Good review. I got the book is a distraction during Covid but sounded very therapeutic. As an adult child of an alcoholic I could relate to Ox and I can also relate to Joe, also as a gay man. The lack of self-confidence is often a trait of ACOA’s, or really for anybody growing up in a dysfunctional family. I loved it so much that I TJ Klune and he wrote back a long letter the next day what a great guy! Needless to say I ordered and next two books and I’ve ordered the fourth in the green creek series. I also got a new truck to me (2012 Toyota Tacoma) and got my first vanity plate “WLFSNG”. Great review and “it was candy canes and pine cones. It was epic and awesome”! Be well!

I completely agree about getting booklash after reading this book. I am not a fast reader and I sat and read it in 24 hours. Literally. Skipped classes and cancelled meetings - like I could not put it down. After an hour of processing the book, I knew that I had to have this book series on my shelf and quickly flew to purchase the WHOLE series. I finished Ravensong in 24 hours as well and just started Heartsong. LITERALLY ALL THE FEELS.
On a side note, I like your synopsis of the age gap. I know a lot of reviewer have been very knit-picky about this detail to the point of trying to crucify Klune in disgust. However, they were friends. Although Joe may have been more aware of what their relationship would GROW INTO, there were still moral development and values between both the characters that are very realistic without being preachy. I just love the scene when Ox notices Joe and runs into the side of the house.... like his eyes were finally open! So good. Love this book so much. Totally obsessed and found a bunch of wonderful fanart! Thank you for the positive review.

This was the 2nd series I read by TJ Klune. I had read Bear, Otter, and the Kid, and read its sequel. I liked the first, and the sequels I found to be better as TJ developed his writing skills. I had read a lot of shifter stories though, and I held off on buying this one because the description made it sound like another pure romance novel with a shifter setting, and TJ didn't seem like a shifter author to me. But I bought it when I ran out of things to read, started reading it, and absolutely got hooked by the 2nd page. I had never been so quickly pulled into a story before. And by the halfway mark, I realized it was one of the finest shifter stories I had ever read. It was an epic tale. The characters are great, and Ox's growth, and the person he turns into, is stunning. It'sx really his coming of age tale. There's comedy, romance, action, suspense, tears, angst... everything you could want in a book. It was this book that made me start looking at other ones from TJ. I wish they described them better in the online store. I wouldn't have waited so long to buy some of them. I thought "The Lightning Struck Heart" was a fairy tale. And yeah, it kinda is, but when you have a trash-talking diva gay unicorn and a perpetually-horny dragon, it's not your grandpa's fairy tale!

Zachary Mankowitz hmm you may like Neal Shusterman’s books. Scythe or Unwind are gone ones to start off with. He has a lot of books and each one brings up a bigger moral question. Neal Shusterman is one of my favorites as well. If you’re looking for a more contemporary read from him, I enjoyed Challenger Deep which is about a boy who starts showing symptoms of being on the schizophrenia spectrum. The drawings were from when his son was hospitalized with symptoms.
I recently read Felix Ever After which is a young adult contemporary book that I really enjoyed. Some young adult fantasy that I felt had some similar vibes to Eragon would be The Summoner by Taran Matharu. It has dwarves and elves and familiars that give people magic. I thought the first book was good but the sequels are better.

I wasn't a big teen wolf watcher. I think I watched maybe half of the first season. I'm fairly confident in saying this is not a teen wolf fanfic though.
If I'm remembering correctly, teen wolf is more general teen drama and worries about not exposing themselves, etc. Maybe more general angst for the whole cast, at least at the very beginning. This story is much more narrow and nuclear. There isn't a wide cast of teen characters, and the ones that are teens are forced to grow up very quickly given their circumstances.

I think almost every TJ Klune book is m/m. I’ve read quite a few now and have enjoyed them. I recently picked up Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. Not sure how it will pan out, but it was one on my radar. I wasn’t a big romance reader before this year, so I don’t have a deep well of books to recommend. Sorry!

Tj Klune is a great author if you want something similar please check out CARDENO C (MATES SERIES) she’s my favorite author.

I agree! I haven't read anything by Cardeno C, so I'll keep an eye out for the books.

This book made me cry so much, I wanted to read it again as soon as possible but scared of going through emotional roller coaster.

I didn't cry, but this book definitely is an emotional journey, with its ups and downs. I'm reading the second book currently!

I' m so happy you love It! I've read numerous times, i looove it. Each book is a little different, but so good. Wolfsong is a little repetitive, yes. How many times Ox says "daddy"? Ugh.
I recommend you the At first sight trilogy, It is sooo funny.
I'm dying to read The cerulean.. and The extrordinaries, wich i have preordered!

I started the second book now and I think the repetitiveness is just a part of this series lol I guess it adds to the angst. I definitely plan to at least check out the first books in his other series now that people have recommended all of them! I think Klune could become one of my favorites. But YES The House in the Cerulean Sea is so sweet and pure.

I haven't read it but I wish there was more MxM fantasy out there!

Yeah, I haven't read a whole lot of mm fantasy books. I think TJ Klune has another fantasy series that's very campy and silly which a lot of people seem to love. I'll probably pick that one up too at some point.

Well, if you're looking for m/m fantasy, then try out basically anything by Ariana Nash, Michele Notaro, or Sam Burns. TJ Klune is a personal favorite, and anything by him is amazing, but these authors also have merit.

Currently reading Heartsong. Awesome. I liked Wolfsong a whole lot, Ravensong a lot and Heartsong is as un-put-downable as Wolfsong ....

I just filmed my review for Ravensong. I didn't want to know anything from Heartsong before recording it. I didn't love Ravensong as much, so I hope I feel the same as you about Heartsong!
