  • If you love the Maksutov as I do you should enjoy this video. This was an accidental discovery made by Ioan Nemes of Galaxy Art Media. The Farpoint Event Horizon focuser is advertised to accompany 6” or larger Maksutov telescopes. It will work with the 5” or 127mm also. This is a great option for those working with filter wheels or anyone looking to incorporate an electronic auto focuser. In the video I demonstrate how to attach it to the popular Synta 127 Maksutov’s rebranded by Skywatcher, Orion, etc. This is much better than belt driven setups IMO. Like most of my videos I uploaded for informational purposes. Finding a good solution for the 127 Maksutov has been a goal of mine for years. Clear skies.

      We? I had the thing and never thought to try it. You’re the mastermind for ever considering it possible. Hat’s off to you. I honestly wouldn’t have even attempted it had you not thought it up.

      @@GarnettLeary i saw in description that works also with a celestron 5 inch so i said is best to try it on mak127 and see if it works or not. Good news for mak127 users. Will make a video also when i get mine and mention you also

    Super discovery, Garnett! - that's one heck of a nice upgrade path for people wanting to give their 5" mak a better focuser, or even add an EAF as you mentioned! :-) Good work putting it out there, maybe even worth emailing to HPS so they see the info too!
    I just want to also say, HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on 5,000 subscribers man!! :-D Well done!
    Clear skies dude!

      I did email them. I feel like there’s enough people using a 127 to warrant getting this product description updated. Thanks on the subs thing. I hadn’t even realized lol. I don’t consider myself entertaining or an influencer by any means. I just look to solve problems and offer information where there’s holes, especially things I faced personally. Not having this focuser was the key reason I went OSC on the Maksutov. I imagine sequencing mono for planetary. The results would have been lightyears better. I’ve got the 180 for that job now. I may do a giveaway on the 127. It be a real shame if it didn’t get a good home.

    Hey Garnett this looks like a great solution to sort this out with an EAF. Looks a very solid little unit as well, nicely explained video. Great information for Mak owners! I think you should consider doing a cover of ...."Return of the Mak 🎶"!

      Lol!!! I have actually but it comes with copyright strikes. You really should consider trying one out. Imagine a Newt that has the contrast of an apo without the need for collimation. That sums it up. Slow yes but deadly precise and dependable. I’ll send you the 127 if you’re interested. Say the word.

      @@GarnettLeary Thanks Garnett 🙏, I probably will try one ,one day tooooo many things!! I actually wouldn't mind sticking one of those DayStar Quark things in my 80mm refractor, nice to have daytime options.

    I’m actually happy with an electronic focuser on the existing focus knob (swapped for pulley) and belt driven

      A lot of people are. There’s nothing wrong with that setup. I think accommodating electronic autofocus across filter wheels is crucial for certain applications. I never switched to mono on the Mak for that reason. I really dreamed of automating focus across filter changes. It’s the lazy geek in me.

    Am wondering if there's an optimum back-focus point for the Skymax 127 - as there's no obvious default position to rack the primary mirror to? Any thoughts or knowledge on this would be a great help - as it would be good to know the limits when setting up a light/image train with crayford focuser, filter draw, camera nosepieces etc. Also for anyone wanting to do eyepiece projection.

      Absolutely! It’s actually something Ioan Nemes of Galaxy Art Media and myself have been discussing. He has the Skywatcher 127. We’ve been comparing notes on various things. That full info will be available soon.

    Thank you for the very helpful review. Just what I'm looking for. Two questions: Have you tried an auto-focus routine and does it produce a well defined V shaped plot to show precise focus point? I attached the ZWO focuser directly to the original coarse focus knob and could not get sharp focus, maybe because of excessive backlash, which leads me to ask if you also need a lock on the coarse focus shaft? Dave C.

      @GarnettLeary  Před 2 lety +1

      It produced a reasonable v-curve for me with an ASI 1600 in combination with the 180 Maksutov. I started at the center of the focus travel and renamed the position to 3000 which is an arbitrary number but useful. The focuser had no trouble calculating the fine focus. You should be somewhere close to infinity focus at midpoint for this method to work. I don’t see where a lock will help unless it’s independent of fine focus. I wasn’t aware that existed if it does. I don’t experience much backlash across my setup. I can think of three causes tho. 1) could be the focuser rack tension isn’t tight enough, 2) the focuser adapter may be too close to the focuser, 3) misaligned focuser adapter. 3) is likely most common. Although flexible those things should spin straight as an arrow.

    You can hack saw it off with this upgrade crayford focuser. After you verified you have enough 55mm back focus. Waaaah, no ass kiss N here comment.
