    App State is a really program and this may always be their signature win. When I was little I put them into what I called my big 3 along with grand valley state in D2 and Mt Union in D3. These teams always seemed to be national champions again and again in the early part of the 2000s. I actually was a Michigan fan after at this time and feared something like this would happen because of Michigan's arrogance and they got a knuckle sandwich. 13 months later it happened again vs Toledo October 11 2008. It nearly happened a 3rd time vs army in 2019. Bottom line because of this nobody fears Michigan stadium or Michigan football anymore and the world especially teams roughly app states size have this group to thank for that.

  • @krugcpa
    @krugcpa Před 2 lety +4

    I turned on the new-fangled Big Ten network that afternoon just to see what it was about. I watched Michigan score right away and thought this game would be a rout. Then I saw Dexter Jackson convert a 6-yard pass into a 68-yard TD, saw that Michigan's safeties lacked the speed to stop the slants and Armani Edwards, and I settled in to watch. The rest of the first half was one-sided: Appl. State was a LOT better - faster on both sides of the ball. In the second half, Michigan finally took off the blinders, forgot who they were playing, and recovered. Still, Appl. State's speed led to the go-ahead drive. Only a miracle pitch-and-catch by Henne to Willingham gave Michigan a shot. Holtz was right about Appl. State - ignore who was wearing which uniform and just watch the game - was NOT an upset.

  • @mynamelildarryl71
    @mynamelildarryl71 Před 2 lety +3

    They were pissed, Lou Holtz was the only one that kept it real lol. FCS is not a joke division and the only reason why the FBS versus FCS games be so lopsided is because FBS rarely schedule the good FCS schools because they don't want what happened on this day to happen. They often schedule lower-rated teams they know they're superior to, and definitely not trying to schedule a defending champion like Michigan did lol. The top schools in FCS are serious and it only shows that the only real difference between the two subdivisions is money.

    Michigan went through a weird stretch of games over that 2-year stretch [2006 & 2007].
    First 11 games of 2006: 11-0.
    Next 4 games: loss to Ohio St [42 points allowed], loss to Southern Cal [32 points allowed], loss to Appalachian State [34 points allowed], loss to Oregon [39 points allowed.
    Next 8 games: 8-0.
    It's like they forgot how to play defense for the 4 games in between the two winning streaks. What happened? And you can't say it was with different players. The same players who produced the 11-game winning streak gave up 74 points in their final 2 games of 2006. The same players who gave up 73 points in the first 2 games of 2007 produced an 8-game winning streak immediately afterwards.

    Lou Holtz pretty much sums it up. ASU took it to Michigan's ass from the first play from scrimmage, all the way to the last blocked field goal. The score was close, but Michigan was soundly beaten in just about every category. Their guys were roughed up because ASU was lean and mean up front.....Henne heard footsteps all game long because he kept getting the shit knocked out of him....lousy blocking. All these comments and no one mentions the possibility that APP State was better, player for player than Michigan was.(and is) App St is geared to play a modern SEC ACC style game, while Michigan is geared to an outdated big white slow Big 10 approach. It was plain to see that UM was just no match for this type of game. (and still are not.) If it werent for careful non conference scheduling Big10 teams are known for, Michigan would have found this out a long time ago. The Toledos, the Eastern Michigans the Western Kentuckys will not prepare a team that has aspirations at the national level. The modern game is DOWN HERE in the South, not in the rust belt.

      And Michigan after getting blown out next game against Oregon did win 8 in a row. They were in fact back in the rankings when the streak was 5.

    In 2005 there was a movie a remake to the classic 1970s filled the long as yard. It's stars Adam Sandler and in the film he says something which is the most ironic line and probly sports movies history.
    In college, we'd start every season against Appalachian State or some slack Division II team," Sandler says. Kick the living shit out of them to boost their confidence up.
    This was the truth Appalachian State was Supposed to be an easy when. A game where the game was over by half time and the coaches were ganna play everybody in and Michigan wolverines uniform Even the freshman and the 2nd string players who probly would never play any games for the rest of the season. But Appalachian state was ready to play and they pulled off the biggest upset of the season probably the biggest upset of all time.

    Think Michigan will be ready to play in that one? Nothig will ever erase what happened, of course, but perhaps a win over ASU would provide some small measure of solace for UM.
    And if App St should happen to win AGAIN... well, it will be a cold day in he!! before a team from a power conference schedules them again.
