  • I visit Brimscombe Port to check up on progress there on the T&S. I also find the roundhouse at Marston Meysey, the developments at Ryeford on the Stroudwater, and a revisit to Saul Junction.

    Hi Paul, enjoyed this video of the canals.
    A rough guess on the plaque on the pub wall. It’s a pun on the brewery name. The family brewery was established in 1843. The family name is Arkell = ark + L. Any good? 🙂

      Sounds good to me! Love it! Yes, I was wondering why that canal barge looked like Noah's creation! It's very clever. Thank you Ian for cracking the code. Thanks too for watching and commenting. I've pinned your comment. Cheers, Paul 🙂👍

    Hi, Paul, I have lived in Kempsford all my life and so I was pleased to see you visit. If you visit Kempsford again please let me know - I think I can get you into some of the private property!
    I am also a volunteer at Inglesham and we have been working hard clearing the canal bed of fallen trees and vegetation for the first 400 yards (which is owned by the Cotswold Canals Trust). If you visit on the open day I will try and introduce myself and say hello! Many thanks for your videos - always very interesting and informative.

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Thank you Mark! And thank you for all the hard work that you and your volunteers do. I did get a glimpse of Inglesham Lock from the footpath bridge over the Thames (in update 4). It looked fabulous. Can't wait to see it a bit closer. I also saw a documentary (on CZcams, but made by the Discovery Channel - it was made 12 years ago). In it, they interviewed several landowners around Kempsford who are very unhappy at the T&S's proposed return into Kempsford. Don't know if this is still the case. I personally think it would look amazing and be an asset. I am a bit perturbed and anxious about coming on the 23rd July to Inglesham because I don't handle people or crowds at all well (it is why I can't be a volunteer or participate in any social events) because of my autism. However, I will try. Thank you for your kind words regarding my video. Cheers, Paul 👍🙂

    Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
    That was a very interesting, very well made video. There is an awful lot going on for you to follow. Most things seem to be moving in the right direction. However, with projects like these, many different agencies are involved and I guess on occaisions, don't communicate with each other. Why the secrecy about the dismissal of the planning permission to get the canal under the M5? I thought all local decisions to do with planning have to be made public. I'm obviously wrong.
    A fantastic video. Brilliant camera work. Your investigative work has to be commended. Thanks so much for this update.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  Před 2 lety

      Thank you Michael! Yes, as you say, there is much going on behind the scenes which isn't public. I suspect the M5 bridge scheme is tied up with the planned new huge football stadium to be built here for Forest Green Rovers (currently sited in Nailsworth about 7 miles away), now a EFL League One football team (confusingly, the third league tier in the English football rankings). The owner of Forest Green has just sold a major energy (gas & electric) company, so lots of money at stake, hence the secrecy. I am not sure that many canal lovers are football fans though, so I am not sure of the cross-marketing opportunities. Thanks for your kind comments, take care, Paul.

    Thanks for the update Paul, tho i've got to agree with the post about the editing chronology, it was a bit confusing at times to me. I hope by the next update you're able to confirm the information regarding the planning application regarding the M5 crossing because if it has been rejected is there any plans for amending the current proposal or any alternatives that are viable?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  Před 2 lety

      Sorry that you found the video confusing. It took me six weeks to film, so apologies for the clothing continuity errors. I did try and make it clear where I was with the maps and subtitles. I don't have any more information regarding the M5 bridge I'm afraid, as I don't know anyone who works for CCT, CCC, or SDC. In fact I remain very dissatisfied with their communications both on their website and the fact that they do not acknowledge my emails. There is still a sign saying that the towpath opens mid May, and no acknowledgement of why the opening has been delayed. My knowledge of the M5 bridge is limited to snatched conversations with volunteers. I think it (using the river Frome channel) is a flawed idea because the canal would be unusable when it rains heavily. Why can't they use the Droitwich Canal model, which had exactly the same M5 dilemma? If I do find out anymore Steve, I will, of course put it into update 10. Thank you for watching and commenting. Take care Steve. Paul.

      @@westcountrywanderings Thanks for the reply Paul,, there was nothing wrong with the items reported (I do agree with your assessment of the M5 crossing situation) it was just the running order confused me a bit, again thanks for the updates.

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Yes, I can't help thinking (perhaps I shouldn't say this) that the Frone River route is to appease, or create money for landowners rather than any inherent benefit for the canal itself. It has no logical engineering merit. I just hope it does not become a stumbling block for the whole project. Thanks again, Paul
