This flag song is in the Pequot language and was written by Kenny Merrick Jr. for the Mashantucket Pequot nation and was originally sung by his group Mystic River. My drum group Urban Thunder was gifted this song by Kenny as well, and we have had the honor of singing it in his presence. It is a beautiful song and it is an honor to be able to sing it. I'm lucky I've had the pleasure of being able to sit at drums with some of the best singers here on the east coast. Unfortunately a lot of people, both Native and non Native alike, think we don't exist out here in the east but we are still here! We are here and we are proud.
I'm Irish. But I grew up and was raised my my wonderful Native Auntie. She instilled in me the values a girl should have. Bless her.. But, my heart just breaks when I think about what so many Native Americans have had to deal with.. I can't watch this video without sobbing...
Man i love seeing my beautiful indian people together singing. We are doing well, and one day we will have our lands that we once had. I will help personally once I am a lawyer. Natives stand up. Kumeyaay Nation from the south.
I love this Flag Song since I first heard it as sung by Northern Cree at Black Eagle Powwow while viewing youtube. They do such a good rendition. I'm glad to know the song origin. Thank you NativeBrotha for letting us know this knowledge.
No need to sob my dear friend, Its not what we had to deal with, Its something we survived. We are getting bigger and our culture is growing stonger every day that passes. If you went to a powwow im sure people dont want to see you getting teary eyed my friend. Mystic River, Good Jamm, Hoka Hayyyy Kenny has an amazing voise
They are singing Cree, a language in the same language family of the Pequot, Algonkin or Algonquin family of languages. The first flag song anyway. As I was typing I hear the Lakota songs lol
