The last stop for our North Island Road Trip was in the Bay of Plenty and taking on the iconic Mt. Maunganui summit walk is the main reason for our visit. But before hiking up the Mount we took a short walk to Leisure Island. This small island sits just off Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach. In the past, it’s been a Māori pā, a quarry, a marine aquarium, and a tourist attraction called Leisure Island. Today the island has reverted to its natural state, with no signs of the former facilities or attractions visible.
Mt Maunganui rises 232 meters from the sea and even before we have gained any real height on The Mount, terraces off the track provide awesome vantage points of Mt Maunganui’s long-stretching white sand beach. The tracks vary from fairly long moderate to short difficult climbs. The summit provides 360-degree panoramic views which span the entire length of the Bay of Plenty. You can gaze out into the ocean, take a good look of the urban jungle of Tauranga from across the harbour, or see the long sandspit below Mt Maunganui wedged between a beach and a harbour. The views are perfect to end our North Island road trip.
