    Excellent step wise troubleshooting video. As a new owner of a Honda outboard I really appreciate learning how the water flows up through the engine and what it should look like! I’ll keep a watchful eye out and source this video when I need to do this work outside it’s warranty! Thank you so much for making this video!!!

    Great video! I have the same issue with my Bf90D after I changed the water pump. Now I know what to get when I change it again. Boats are a money pit! 😂

      They are expensive, but even more so if you don’t maintain them!

    Just changing the impeller, key and the 2 gaskets is ok if you do it say once a year or every two years. But when you change just those parts, you need to inspect the liner and the cover plate. What happens is the impeller will wear a groove in the liner and the cover plate right around the hole where the main drive shaft passes through those 2 plates. So when you maintenance the water pump with the lesser of the two kits and you don't know to look for this, the groove just looks like it belongs there. Now I can't say for sure that was the cause of your problem but I do know these grooves will let water get by and in turn producing less water pressure going to the block. I actually just did the whole cooling system flush just as you did and changed the water pump with that lesser of the two kits also. Well I should have known better and bought the liner and cover plate (yes, you can buy these seperately also in lieu of the entire kit) and changed them at the same time because the groove in them was pretty bad. Seemed like I the tattle tail had even less pressure at idle than it did before I changed the impeller. So if you happen to still have the old water pump parts, look good at the liner and cover plate and you'll see this groove. I actually could see it in the parts in your video. Thanks for posting the video. I have a 2014 BF90D.

    Hi Dave
    I have 4 Honda BF 90, 2013 models, of which one has this same problem of water flowing out from the hole just above the gearbox. The hole I'm referring of is the hole just in front of where you can see the gear shifter passing by through the casing.
    None of my other 3 motors have water flowing through that hole, I do believe there is another problem causing this.
    Did you ever discover any other issues related to this and/or did the water ever stop flowing from that hold while running the motor on the flushing muffs?

      Oddly I ended up replacing the whole pump kit which seemed to do the trick. I think one of the splines was facing the wrong direction which cased the issue. You can see in my video the troubleshooting steps I did to get the water flow working properly. It was an odd one.

    I have come to the conclusion that these motors are high maintenance. My father-in-law has a Honda 90 that stopped running and no trailor to tow it to shop. Dealer must come to him$$$$$$$.

      Got to maintain any motor - especially if you run them in salt water. It helps when you do the work yourself. That’s why I put these videos together 😁

    My BF75D just gave me problems on the water for the first time, Had to limp in at idle. Buzzer sounded and killed engine power as soon as I would try to go on plane. Happened twice so I decided to limp back in (engine was peeing). I pulled both T-stats and they don't look great, but I tested with hot water and they both open and close. Pulled pressure relief valve and it looked good. Only thing I messed with prior to this problem was I replaced the flush port connector seal and nut (don't think it had anything to do with this). I'm gonna replace both T-stats, clear out internal passages with a de scaling compound and then probably move onto the water pump/impeller etc. if it still continues. Any info would be greatly appreciated Dave, Loved this outboard until little things here and there are starting to occur with it.

      They are great motors. Could be several things, but I would start with basic maintenance items. See my other videos for cooling/flushing/fuel.

    Hi what should be the fuel consumption on bf 75 d at 4000 rpm thanks

    • @davecavanaugh66
      @davecavanaugh66  Před 6 měsíci

      That would vary from boat to boat. Best bet would be to run your boat with a full tank for 1 hour at a normal cruising speed. Then fill it back up to see how much fuel was used.

    Did you find out if its normal to have water flowing out of the port just above the anti-ventilation plate on front of the lower unit. You mentioned that in the beginning of the video if it was normal. Mine does flow water about as much as yours after the fix.

      I ended up replacing the entire water pump plus the housing and it stopped doing that. But what I think was the real problem was one or more of the rubber splines on the impeller was probably facing the wrong way - it was a strange issue.
