For a quarter of a century, Vaden Todd Lewis and his band has been spreading alt-rock jams around the world. Lewis, guitarist Clark Vogeler and bassist Doni Blair did a pre-soundcheck chat with PG before their sold-out show at Nashville’s Exit/In.
Vaden Lewis tours with two nearly identical Gibson SG ’61 reissues, both stock with ’57 Classic pickups. These SGs stay strung up with Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings.
Blair plays a Fender Steve Harris Precision bass that features Seymour Duncan Steve Harris SPB-4 pickups and a Fender High-Mass bridge. Blair strings this beast with Ernie Ball (.045-.105) strings.
Vogeler spends most of his time on this “parts” guitar he helped assemble. He started with a Warmoth Jazzmaster body that he routed out for a Floyd Rose tremolo. Next, he added a Warmoth Strat neck with a string lock. The last ingredients are two Seymour Duncan pickups.

Loved this band for years and it's so cool to see how basic their rigs are.
Seen this band two times in the last 10 years once indoor once outdoor. have to say that their sound is one of the best live sounds I have ever experienced. Found this video very informative to know how the magic happens!
Haha, this is my first time listening to them, and I love the Bass player's personality.
Andyuf2 he’s such a nice guy, I met him after a show a couple of weeks ago
I fell in love with them as soon as I heard that first riff of possum kingdom.
Easily the best bass tone I’ve ever heard. If not the best to others, then it’s my favorite.
This is awesome! Long overdue! Big Toadies fan... seen them multiple times and they never disappoint!!! They are a pure rock band!
I've been waiting for this episode for a long time, I never thought you guys would actually do it! Thank you! These guys are by far my favorite band (currently together).
These guys are so great, and, so real !!!
One of the coolest bands ever. Big fan from the great state of Texas. So pumped y'all did this rundown. Keep up the good work premier guitar!
That's a very rock n roll rig
Glad to see the Toadies on here another amazing band out of Texas from Fort Worth.
Yep. Live in Fort Worth myself. Grew up in Grapevine. Toadies still play out here all the time. Well before the pandemic lol.
This always makes me super proud of two things in my life… I’m a born and bred Texan and a Owner of a 2204 jcm800.
I'm a big Toadies fan. Thanks for the rundown!
Vaden and Clark are such a good combo!
You should do a rig rundown on local h! They are on tour with toadies. Scott Lucas's rig is awesome
The Toadies and Local H... I'm in high school again. Dammit..
Sheldon Benton god a local h rig rundown would be so badass, his rig is so weird and cool
I love ty Tabor totally underated
Yes Scott is a huge influence on me. Dating back to like 2000 for me lol jesus time flies
John here. I’ll do it.
Jon does a great job of leading the musician down the path
Dude! That Jazzmaster! I don’t know almost anything about the toadies, but this dude to a tea built one of my dream guitars! It’s criminal that no companies hardly ever have put a Floyd in a jazzmaster style body. You can do warmoth or recently, SBS Guitars sells a cheap one (I’m about to buy one). Also, that same type of pickup is what I use! It’s the one Eddie Van Halen designed w/ Seymour Duncan. I have a recreation of the Wolfgang USA pickups. That thing fits in a mix the way rock guitar/distorted amps were made to. powerful mids and bass and treble are just right. I love this dude!
Great episode!
Best Live Band I have ever saw and and even better group of guys. Do yourself a favor and don't miss them in a live performance. Their albums are great, but their live show is on another level.
zbdd8 I agree easily in the top 5 bands I’ve seen live.
Saw them play rubberneck in its entirety at Irving plaza this year. Fuckin amazing show they sound the same if not better as the record.
I saw them 5 years after this video. Same rig, same badass wall of sound.
Such an awesome band
Warmoth guitars are excellent instruments...their wide range of customization options are incredible...I have two, a Telecaster with Seymour Duncan Lil' 59 in the bridge and Hot Rails rhythm in the neck....and a Telecaster with twin P-90's from Warmoth....
One of my favorite guitars is an old Warmoth LP flat top with Duncans and an 80's Kahler trem. I've got a Warmoth Tele-Gib with a Dimarzio PAF wired like an Esquire. Love it.
Killer band. They gave me tinnitus at a Stubbs show. Rubberneck has never left my playlist.
I'm so greatful to Orange for their great amps. My home rig and live rig are all Orange. I love the Toadies and have been a fan since 95. I have always loved their tone. Great band and so cool that they demo their gear themselves.
I love the toadies... i got to work with them a few times when I moved to Austin in 96...
(17:20) Getting feedback to sound like that is an art form. I'm totally jealous.
Awesome to see that the guitarist with the JazzMaster used warmoth for the build. The Toadies rule.
GOD I love Toadies!!!!!!!!
I would also like to hear about the mics used to mic all the cabs. It's a pretty big part of the rig
Guitars: Sennheiser e906 and Shure SM57
Bass: Looks like a Shure Beta 56A
I liked this video before I even watched it.
lol You had me at "Aaaaand scene!" XD Also, I love that he apparently thought West Ham was a person(?) lol And what a gorgeous SG! I don't even usually like SGs!
I call bullshit on John's "I'm-pretty-much-a-stock-guy-too" statement, tho ;) We've seen your guitars, man! :P :D
Love this. I'm a big fan of Hagfish, Blair's other band
My fav JCM 800 sound.
Saw the Toadies open for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, when I was maybe a freshman in high school, and ended up meeting them 20 years later.
I am super bummed that they didn't talk about Vaden's natural finish guitar that was his main one, when I saw them live the last time.
are you talking about his natural L6S that was his first guitar?
The Darkglass B7K is the most insane bass drive pedal. Sounds so good!
No one really ever thought about the playing abilities of these guys. I thought 🧐I guess rich out of touch dorks with a lot of time and money, but they’re sound is turn the amp on, distortion at 7 or 8 or so.. (doesn’t really matter)any guitar off the shelf at guitar centers. You got it.
Stock gear!! I love it.
Man, this band isn't really one of my favourites, but they are pretty cool. But the guitar and bass tones are killer! I hear it on the albums, but I appreciate the band even more now!
Not hating, but I'm surprised the Toadies were the D/FW band to gain (and maintain) national fame. There were so many better local bands in the 90's (Reverend Horton Heat, Course of Empire, etc.), but none had the Toadies staying power.
Kudos to the band for their persistence.
Tripping Daisy
That Warmoth Jazzmaster is awesome! The pickup is great with all the feedback-- how is is made so that it does that? No wax potting maybe? I built a strat with a Warmoth neck and body, and the quality of Warmoth products is second to none, but what's key is the customization options. Anyway, I sold my amp, a 5150 combo, years ago when I stopped playing, and now that I'm playing again, I was thinking of getting something like an Axe FX, but that Orange amp, Tube Screamer, and Duncan pickup combo sounds so good. I have a suspicion that modeling amps can't do that. Great tone in this video!
The feedback is from a loud amp. He did mention that the pickups he got, The Seymour Duncan Custom Custom (the original pickup they designed for Eddie Van Halen), were picked specifically for that feeding back response. I have what is essentially the same pickup, just made by a boutique builder (that’s the exact same design for the EVH Wolfgang bridge pickup in all the EVH guitars). It’s very mids focused. It’s a higher output alnico 2 humbucker. It hits the front of an amp and fits the mix just like rock guitar should. It’s fantastic.
I’m currently running digital too. If you’re using headphones w/ digital, you won’t get that feedback like he has, but there’s this amazing pedal called the Digitech FreqOut, that will totally do that sound with silent stages or running DI/headphones. It will do near endless feedback like a Fernandez sustainer/sustaniac will, but I use it to keep that loud guitar amp feedback feeling even when playing silent.
I remember when him and his brother were in hagfish
Damn I'm going to buy an electric. I've only been acoustic playing for the last way too long. I has an accidental sound happening on a 1979 Vantage lespaul copy from some wiring and pickup mods and an overdrive switch. He made a crazy powerful yet clean strong sound. I built my style around it in that band and when I went to have it tuned up ( fret dress ect) the dude tore out all that beautiful sounding mess and "fixed it". I was mad as hell and though it had the crazy custum over powered over wrapped pickup in still all the rest was gone including the six 9v batteries. My friend Rory who did it ( I helped lol) couldn't recreate it.
Wait , the whammy guitar player said the bridge pickup was a Duncan custom custom. But it had a single row of pole pieces. So is it a hum bucker or single coil
Or a hum bucker hidden under a plastic jazzmaste r pickup cover
Ah !
wait a second
I could be wrong
Correct me if I'm wrong
Cool guitar
15:11 Ope... lemme just slink back out of here
I miss Lisa ........
2:46
15:11 lololol
😂😆
20 pound bass is he insane ???
That SG isn’t a 1964 Reissue, it’s a “Standard ‘61”
'tis the season for colombian flu lol
This comment aged crazy.
Do you wanna die? About steve harris bass though.. thats probably why Steve always wears that ridiculous fluffy padded guitar strap if hes sayin it weighs 20lbs lol.
Oldest band ever on Rig Rundown?
David S no yes is the oldest
Go West Ham!!!
What was the song at the beginning?
Broke Down Stupid
czcams.com/video/ElMHU_B71qw/video.html
I think the first time I heard these guys was in _Guitar Hero: 2_ with their song "Possum Kingdom"
What hall is this filmed in?
www.exitin.com/ mentions it around 7:40
Exit Inn (Nashville, TN)
"I'm a stock guy as well".... Really John? It seems at least half your guitars are modded in one way or another
Make up your mind!
Johnny beans the man!
Forgot the drum tone
West Harris United is most likely a football team fan emblem in the UK
James Walsh West Ham United are a Premier division football or soccer team as you guys know it in London and Iron Maiden are big fans
Lisa is the only real bassist for the Toadies.
Ha! I love it when Yanks don't get football.
Damn, they got old...and started playing old man music
VTL thinks he’s too cool for school.
“I love Jaco and John Paul Jones so I got these”
Plays Chinese made heads that have absolutely nothing in common with the amps they used.
But man... the sound good! and dont fail as the people say, been playing the same b600h for 5 years and never fail on me and you can get the tone from an ampeg to an old school cab.... they are underated.
The guy is very small he plays a heavy guitar to prove himself that he is strong but thats not the case
