I like the door idea! I made my own 40 gallon brooder about a week ago for my new chicks. My hen hatched 11 and theyâre all doing very well and still alive! Going to build a larger brooder this weekend⊠theyâre outgrowing that thing FAST!

I use that same container with pine shavings. Instead of a lamp, I now use a Brinsea EcoGlow. Love it!! I will never use a bulb again.
A cheap kids playpen works too for more chicks/ longer brooder time if needed!

I wish I had this video for my first chicks. It took me a while to learn how to work smart not hard. I'm going to make a couple of the feeder stands.
That brooder, if tall enough, might make a chill out space for a sick/hurt chicken.

We will be doing a similar set up next month for 80 chickens đŻ. I may lose my mind with all of that chirping inside, but we are off grid so heat lamps aren't an option.

@@kaylavillalobos1779 we are doing a cold brooding set up. It has insulated boxes inside for the chicks to gather in and stay warm by body heat. It still also use a jug filled with warm water as a radiant warmer. The chicks can gather around it when they need a little extra warmth.

I use for bedding dirt/soil.
I believe that dirt fixes splay legs.
Since I moved to dirt/soil I haven't noticed any leg problem
How do you clean it? Do you continually add soil? And what type of soil do you use?
@@katwilliams2950 sometimes I'm replacing the soil and sometimes add some more. It's better in my opinion to replace it.
I use black or brown fluffy and a bit moistured soil. Nothing special. I'm just collecting it from under the lemon tree.
It's soft and their legs dive in.

We put a second hand store plastic doggy gate over the top of our chicks brooder. It extends to what ever length container we are using. Works fine.

Justin I love your videos so much so I decided to buy my own jersey cow I raised her and her calf and I was wondering if the fresh milk has a certaint smell not bad but different from store bought milk
fresh milk will smell different than the milk you are used to as it has all the cream still in it.

How do homesteaders treat their chickens for parasites, and leg mites? My Mom grew up on a chicken farm and she doesn't remember anything about this issue. Lately, I have noticed a brand of frozen chicken my family buys has had thread parasites in the meat. We have mo answers, so we are giving up chicken for now until we find a brand that doesn't have this problem. It's too bad we have to go without homemade chicken soup this winter.

I am in Florida weather in Brooksville is 70 one day next morning 32 so I put the chicks in a tote then in a dog kennel they are getting bigger

@@faithsfarmlife1424 I grew up in Hudson, then lived in Brooksville. My husbands military so we went from Brooksville to Washington state and now Kansas lol. Itâs helped us get a better idea of where we want to purchase land when he gets out!

Even now he doesn't clean out the brooder. His current big brooder has years of old bedding, he just keeps adding more shavings. That is just another thing that he shouldn't be teaching new homesteaders.
@@darlaherbst5929 I could see if the bedding is OK for that year, but I donât think Iâd go for several years. I would be afraid that diseases might get passed on or somesuch. Thank you for the input.

@@susanc536 Last year he lost many in the coop, then put the rest out to pasture to freeze to death. Yep, lost 100 chicks! Viewers told him that it was to early, the chicks needed feathers, but he put them out anyway!! What kind of person does that??

You say half gallon of water for the recipe, but the recipe on Abundance+ says 1 gallon. Does anyone know which one it is? Videos and vlogs disagree, some say 1 gallon and some say half gallon.

Please do not use those dangerous heat lamps! Too many homes, barns, sheds and chicks have burned. Water splashed on a hot bulb can shatter it. Exposed filament can spark. Overheated bedding can ignite. 250 watts uses a lot of electricity since used 24/7
Lower wattage, safer warmer plates are better for the chicks. Warmer plates adjust easily, and can be set at an angle so chicks can go to the height they prefer. Low possibility of sparking, no shattered glass danger, lasts way longer are benefits of warming plate versus bulb.
Uhh. Lamps I see are 148 watts.
Warmer plates can use 25 to 60 watts, depending on size. Lower wattage heating bulbs are ok, but they do not last very long, and risk of broken glass a hazard.

First of all I want you to know that I love your show, but I have a question for you. Why do you call your Chickens Dino's, they have never been related to Dino's, if you look in the book of Genesis in the Bible God made all of the animals on the same day. They have never evolved into anything else they have been the same animal from the beginning. If you look at the Pre-Cambrian layer there are no animal bones at all, then in the Cambrian layer (Next layer up) you find bones from every animal that has existed all in the same level. Therefore there is no evolution. đđđđđ
