One thing about music is; whatever era it was conceived, it can be written down with the whole style and every little nuance correctly instructed by the composer. So even if there were no recordings to listen to, the musicians would be able to correctly play the piece as originally intended. I often wonder, as I listen to some of the modern songs played on the radio, how many covers or renditions of these "songs" will be played in the future? Not many I bet. In fact they are shit.
