Elvis was born in Tupelo Mississippi in 1935 and later moved to Memphis Tennessee, he lived in Memphis from like 1948 until his death in 1977 but he also had homes in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Palm Springs California. His home in Memphis called “Graceland” is where he is buried and is still visited yearly by about 500 thousand people per year pre-covid.

Elvis was an enigma ... he was a rather shy man who was very religious ... he loved to read . But when he was ELVIS "the entertainer" , he became the image we all know . The one constant was his sense of humor ... he loved to laugh and play pranks on his friends .

Re the hard rock songs comment: Elvis' publishing company - Hill & Range, brought into the fold by his manager - set up an unprecedented arrangement: all publishing rights to songs recorded by Elvis were split 50:50 between the company and Elvis and his manager.
Hill & Range employed their own writers to provide songs for Elvis, effectively precluding Elvis from recording material not licensed to them. When other songwriters did offer their songs, Elvis' manager demanded 50% of the royalties. In the 50s it worked well, but the 60s saw the blossoming of the singer/songwriter who'd prefer to keep all of their royalties.
As Elvis did not write his own songs and his manager effectively isolated him from contact and collaboration with other singers/songwriters, Elvis was often not able to get the best material available. This was one of the reasons for the many covers Elvis did. During recording sessions, when confronted with a lack of good material, Elvis would start recording songs that he'd always liked, from memory.
What a travesty. One of the most unique and beautiful interpretive singing voices ever, often had to make do with second-rate songs. But Elvis, bless his soul, could make even mediocre material sound great!

You may want to react to the interview he gave in 1960 when he returned home after serving 2 years in the Army. He was only 25. He was already a big star when he was drafted and went thru a regular tour of duty going overseas, NO SINGING & NO SPECIAL TREATMENT.

I really enjoyed your reaction. It's so much fun to see young people take an interest in discovering Elvis and his music. He was 37 years old at this time, and I think he and his wife were separated at this time. They married in May, 1967 and divorced in October, 1973. Entertainers did do world tours back then, and Elvis wanted to. It was discovered years later that his manager was an illegal alien who was afraid if he left the U.S. he wouldn't be allowed back in so the only concerts Elvis ever did outside the country were three in Canada.

He also owned a ranch in Tenn for awhile. His National fame was from 1956- his death in 77. But from 1954 thru 1955, he toured in the Deep South and recorded local hits on the Sun Label.

That was choppy. It must be years ago that I saw the entire video with no breaks or jump shots. I remember that Geraldo Rivera was filmed asking him a question. This one was too disjointed. But I thank you for airing it. There are other interviews that were filmed and dozens of audio interviews.
Elvis had a well-developed sense of humor. If you watch a lot of his shows you'll find out. Also when he was in the studio recording he jokes around between takes.
You can see that he was an intelligent, respectful, modest and articulate guy. Even in his early 20s he handled himself well in interviews. Unfailingly polite with gracious southern manners.

He joined and served in the Army from 1958 to 1960 in Germany, and came out as Sergeant Elvis Presley! He was already famous and had made four movies before he joined the Army, then made many more afterwards, in addition to his eventual live concerts. A whirlwind of a life! New subscriber here!

Something I loved about Elvis was his generosity. He bought houses, jewelry, cars, you name it, for people who worked for him and even total strangers. One I particularly like is that he happened to be a at a Cadillac dealer he used, and he noticed a nice, middle middle age black lady walking around a Coupe De Ville and just gawking at inside and out. He casually walked over to her and asked her if she liked it. I think she thought he was a sasleman because the story goes she didn't even really look at him, just said "well, I never..." Elvis said "Well, I just bought it for you". Estimates are that he bought over 200 Caddys in his career.

The part where Elvis is responding to the question why doesn't do any more rock songs and he talks about there not being enough material to go around. He's more or less alluding to the effect that the Beatles had on the industry i.e. they wrote and recorded their own songs. Elvis was not a song writer, just a singer and that put him and other artists in his position at a disadvantage.

Elvis was a shy person but extroverted on stage. In the 50s, they wanted to have him arrested because of the way he moved his hips on stage and would only shoot him when he was on TV from the waist up. I would suggest watching videos about his life, Elvis by the Presley's is good. He was also born in extreme poverty. A great video here on CZcams that details that an also talks to is childhood friends is called Elvis Return to Tupelo. I highly recommend watching that. His story is the biggest rags to riches story in history.

    @LM-hb6yn Před 2 lety

Elvis was famous and beloved worldwide from the moment he burst on the national scene. He could have traveled the world to sold out crowds everywhere. But the reason he didn't travel wasn't that they didn't do that back at that time... it was because his manager wouldn't let him. Just like he wouldn't let him do serious acting in good movies. On the one hand Tom Parker aka The Colonel did make Elvis huge, though I think Elvis would have been famous with any decent manager. But the Colonel did several things that made the fans always want more. He was smart like a fox and made lucrative deals, for him and for Elvis, but as time went on, deals that stifled Elvis creativity, dreams and goals. Deals that locked him into increasingly bad movies after maybe the first half dozen. Some of his early movies were good and showed potential. But the studio execs and the Colonel saw dollar signs when they saw that the fans would go to see Elvis movies no matter how lousy they were. And they'd pay to see and hear Elvis sing, no matter how lousy the songs were. They stopped getting veteran actors to start in movies with Elvis, and created what basically amounts to Travelogs with the same plot, different location filled with lousy songs. Then they produced a soundtrack and put that out as an album. During that time Elvis wasn't doing any other recordings except those movie soundtracks because that's what was raking in the money, which is all the Colonel cared about. That's another thing. It's because of the Colonel that Elvis couldn't get good songs from established writers for his movies because he refused to let Elvis do any song unless the song writer signed away all rights. Through much of the movie years, Elvis was progressively unhappy and absolutely hated what he was forced to do. But he kept his commitments and was loyal to a fault. He was always so thankful to the Colonel for making him a star that he didn't try to fire him until near the end. But the Colonel scared Elvis' father, Vernon Presley, with threats of law suits and demands of millions of dollars he claimed Elvis owed him. So Vernon pressured Elvis into hiring him back the next day. I think at that point Elvis just gave up.
Not many mention this, but Elvis had dreamt of becoming a movie star as a child. He loved going to the movies, idolized the famous actors, memorized every line of his favorite movies and dreamt of one day being a movie star. The Colonel knew Elvis desired to do serious acting in good movies, just like he knew Elvis desired to do a worldwide tour. But the Colonel consistently went against Elvis' stated wishes for the sake of 💰 without regard or respect for the talent, artistry, goals or physical and mental health of the man in front of him.
There were multiple factors which all converged and lead to Elvis' rapId decline the last year or two of his life. How the Colonel had managed his career was certainly one of the root issues underneath Elvis' increasing depression and self destructiveness. The lack of being creatively challenged, not being able to pursue his goals, the end of his marriage, his serious untreated health problems, being forced to go on the road doing concert tours when he was very sick and clearly needed time off... all were factors in Elvis demise. Due to both the Colonel's gambling debts and Elvis' own financial situation, he was forced to go on tour, doing two concerts a night seven nights a week with only a month break in between before he was due to go on another tour when he died. During Vegas stints, he also did 2 shows a night, 7 nights a week for the entire engagement, always to sold out crowds. People traveled from all over the world to this country just to see Elvis and his shows were sold out within hours of going on sale. He was a superstar and shouldn't have had to work that hard at that time in his life or in the condition he was in. But Elvis spent and gave money away almost as fast as he made it. And the Colonel took roughly 50% of what he made, and even more on all the Elvis memorabilia he sold at concerts. Elvis was his cash cow and it didn't matter to him what shape Elvis was in, he better be on that stage. (According to more than one man who worked for Elvis.)
IMO, the Colonel may have started out good for Elvis, but ended up very bad for him and was a contributing factor in his decline and early death.

It’s called The Motown Invasion and it’s when Motown acts did tour Britain but it’s very down to the start of Motown artists getting hits from their exposure. Heard Mary Wilson tell about how the gigs were meh but as they kept getting through the tour there were more people attending and about third week in they were really drawing in the crowds. He always said he was nervous doing interviews n also going on stage doing concerts. He would have the guys n girls sing a gospel song prior to running on stage. Gospel music relaxed him. Another interview of Jackie Wilson n son Bobby Wilson did a short interview. N AT a memorial of Elvis Mohammed Ali did a speech about his friend Elvis It is alittle hard to understand what he saying but several people found the words of the speech on line. He loved Elvis n became good friends with him thank you for keeping Elvis music alive. I have listened to Elvis since 1956. I'll try n find a few more interviews for you. I remember an interview at Texas Astrodome(

Elvis had a shady manager who was wanted in his home country for suspected murder! He wouldnt let Elvis travel out of the US coz he couldnt go & worried Elvis would realise he didnt need him an sack him! His manager took 50% of Elvis's income!! He also put a stop to Elvis playing better acting roles....in this interview u get a glimpse of Elvis ignoring the colonal...he wanted to sack him but his dad used to say he wouldnt be famous etc His mum didnt like the colonal but died early on sadly.

Elvis was born in a 1 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. Elvis wanted to be more open about it, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed. It's such a damned shame that his manager was an illegal alien in the US. He kept Elvis from performing around the world; was afraid he might not be able to get back into the US if he joined Elvis on tour abroad. He did not trust Elvis to cross the ocean without him; was probably afraid he would expand his horizon and dump his illegal butt for another, better, manager.

His manager, Colonel Parker was an illegal immigrant from somewhere in Europe. From what I hear people wanted to watch him all over the world but his manager couldn't take a chance of leaving the country because he was illegal.FAX

I'm pretty sure his "I take vitamin E" response had a tongue in cheek "dirty" meaning behind it, because it was right about this time that vitamin E was being touted in the health industry as helping men maintain an erection, so when she asked "How do you think you've "outlasted" other performers", that's what he was jokingly referring to, that's why he follows up with, "I embarrassed myself..."
