Mattel thinking us fans are stupid is a massive understatement
Yep
Exactly man
I remember watching Trevor Davis’ video about the Q&A of Thomas Wood and apparently the reason why they did this change is so that parents and kids can tell the difference between the various toys. It’s a poor excuse.
@@iceeblueburst03 it is.
@@iceeblueburst03 maybe a difference of what toys NOT to buy
Putting the words "millennials" and "Gen Z" on your products packaging automatically makes it terrible.
Hey, Canadian from early 90’s here.
I don’t mind recycling and doing more environmentally friendly stuff such as having a full vegetarian day for food but I don’t enjoy being lumped next to the gen z crowd for this crap.
Especially given most of gen z tend to be real big unpleasant people preaching in your face on their way being the only way to live.
@@Thomasmemoryscentral hey, Texan from the year 2000 here...
honestly same
Unless you're over 41, you're a Millennial , and you're Gen Z if you're younger than 30. So....
@@mightyfilm gen z starts at 2000 and ends at 2013.
@@yaboidustin2447 Why did I put 30? I clearly had 20 in my mind when I was typing.
If they had wanted to market on sustainability, you know what they could have actually done? Maybe bring back the wooden domes, smokeboxes, and funnels, reducing plastic? Maybe even swapping the wheels out for turned wood. Heck, if they wanted to cut costs and reduce quality while playing it off as a more sustainable choice, they could have done simpler printed on faces instead of the molded plastic ones. I see what they were theoretically going for by showing off the wood, but the people who are making the decision about purchasing the toys are old enough to understand that WOODEN railway is made of freaking WOOD, without you showing bare wood on the toys.
This would've been FAR superior to the Thomas Wood we got
If it was just printed faces, I wouldn't even be mad about it. Shit, I'd be happy if it was actually to reduce carbon footprint
Edit: I've changed my mind, I want printed faces regardless. They look better.
Didn't the earliest ERTLs have printed faces? And they were one of the best Thomas lines produced - if Mattel's people had a brain cell between them, oh how different things would be...
@@ajaxengineco Hot take: ERTL Thomas, while well-detailed and made, is inferior to Take Along/pre-2014 Take-N-Play. The scale is far more consistent, the coupling system is a heck of a lot more durable, and the engines' faces don't look bloated. While I understand that ERTL has its perks (where else are we going to get merch of Bluebell and Sixteen), I feel like it's kneecapped by inconsistent scaling (WHY IS TOBY SO FAT), fat faces and a wonky coupling system.
Save the planet, buy Thomas Wood wooden track and it won't connect to any other standard wooden railway track. Yeah smart move
How do you fuck up wooden track?
@@Bacony_Cakes By implementing backwards and proprietary standards to an already successful and common format and expecting people to agree to it.
Let's just say, most thomas fans have a higher IQ than Mattel, when it comes to merchandise-
The fact they did the "millennial gen z" shit shows that this product was going to fail.
HoW dO yOU Do, fElLOw KiDS?
As the mother of a 2.5yr old who loves Thomas and a older Millennial, I am sooo glad they rebooted it to the new stuff. My husband and I saw the bobo Thomas wood and went "yuck what is that. Why is half the paint missing? " I am sure our son would even look at it confused if we had given it to him. Needless to say all of his engines that are available in the new reboot are those and the others are pre-bobo Thomas wood. I think we have a random tender for a bobo Thomas wood in his basket but I am eventual just going to sand it down and paint it green for our old Henry that is missing his.
If I ran a toy store, I would’ve refused to stock Thomas Wood and instead sourced all sorts of new old stock TWR products (making sure to avoid items affected by the 2007 lead recall) and the Brio Thomas range that was sold in the UK and Japan from 1996 to 2000!
😂 I don’t why you think it’s a step up. The reboot is just as bad as Thomas wood 😂
@@Cenation9740 the reboot of the Thomas wood not the TV show.
If you are not satisfied with the henry tender result buy it at a flea market
Mattel thinks Thomas fans are dumb, but they tend to take Hot Wheels fans seriously.
(Probably because Hot Wheels is their most profitable franchise)
That makes sense honestly
@@ItsTrainBoy And at the same time, Mattel canned Hot Wheels AcceleRacers because it became more popular than Hot Wheels itself, leaving the series on a cliffhanger after the fourth movie, and missing out on a ton of profits.
To be fair, Hot Wheels is aimed at a generally older audience than Thomas, and Mattel at least realizes that kids by 2nd grade will have some sort of standards, even though younger kids can have standards too.
@@wishbonefan A product being targeted at a younger audience is not an excuse for that product to be of a lower quality.
@@davidguthary8147 Sorry, I should have phrased that better. I don't think Mattel is right for thinking that only kids ages 8 or older can have standards, I was just saying that's what they think.
When I was in kindergarten, we learned to count to 100, and so we all had to bring in 100 of something. People were bringing in 100 Pennies or 100 m&ms, I brought in 100 Thomas wooden railway trains… we did a display thing for the other kindergarten classes, and my display had to go on the teachers desk. Note this is 2014, or 13. Idk at this point, but everyone else at the time had the bad tomy wooden trains, I had all old learning curve and 90s trains. It was awesome. I was king of the playground that day
I remember having to do that too but for fifth grade for some reason.
The whole marketing campaign for Wood barely even focused on how they’d work with kids. You know, the actual demographic of the toy? 💀
I’m all for environmentally conscious decisions but designing a toy line with the PARENTS moral compass of spending being the entire presentation instead of the child who’s going to play with the thing is probably one of the stupidest strategies I’ve ever seen for a product bruh.
Thomas wood is the meaning of “how did we get here?”
Ah, Wooden Railway. I loved that old stuff. Still have all of mine, actually. It was an easy childhood favourite next to the Tomy range. I was really spoiled for Thomas toys back then - playing with my ERTLs in the sand pit, the wooden railway in my room, the Tomy outdoors.
"Millennial and Gen Z" are the ones who GREW UP with the original Thomas Wooden Railway.
Well, as a sonic fan, i like enviromental messages... And this is one of the worst ways of executing it.
Lmaooo
Honestly thomas is the reason i got into sonic
@@NewSkater3000me too, i got into sonic when the movie came out, i really enjoyed it, and when the sequel came out, i made sure to know all the lore, so i won't be confused.
yes Thomas fans are “stupid”, stupid enough to make prop replicas in any scale as well in any toy range, “stupid” enough to make beautiful orchestral music or any genre of music and make it Thomas music or the other way around. “stupid”writing styles that can match any era of the franchise if not better at times. and combing our talents, we “stupid fans” can make a series surpassing the quality of the show. we as fans are far from stupid we are as a matter of a fact are brilliant. name another fandom out there that can actually match their shows quality and keep it that consistent for as long as we have. I don’t think there is another one out there that can. so Good day to you Mattel. alright vent over i’m gonna take a nap.
enjoy your (likely done by now) nap
Hey what is this fan made series?
calm down lol its a show for toddlers
@@RaptorsVideos the first 7 seasons were made for all ages, but then the hit era took a giant shit on the shows reputation by making it aimed at kids who were on the verge of discovering how to think
@@whatare9731 dont care its a baby show, grow up god damn
The early Thomas wooden items from way back in time were built by a Swedish company called Brio who built many decent wooden railway items and still do and they weren't bad if you ignored the non spoke design wheels, i still have the UK outline locomotives from when I was little and they still look great now and they are well over 20 years old (highly sustainable). Obviously when Mattel waded onto the scene they obviously decided to use a cheaper method as those new Thomas wooden trains look like they have already done 20 years of hard play time.
If i had a nickel for every time a large kids company made their toys dogshit to save $0.12 on each toy,
Id have too many nickels.
Oh fuck same
$0.12 more like $0.012
You could buy the company.
If we are in a major war and companies made a budget version of toys that looked like this, i would be happy to buy it.
Monopoly did, they made simplified wartime board and tokens without using precious metals during WW2 and the simplicity is alluring.
I think that’s a whole other situation there big dawg, if that were the case hell yeah it wouldn’t even be a question but until then I think a little more wood/ metal could’ve been sufficed. 💀
tbh Mattel thinks toys trains=kid and doesnt care about older people
I'd agree with that if they didn't care so much about Bachmann
@@ItsTrainBoy plus, we wouldn't have Doug Blaine from Bachmann gladly doing progress updates on TrainWorld's Thomas Tuesday streams if him & the Thomas Team at Bachmann didn't care about the older fans (plus having a rake of Toby's Museum Coaches as mentioned by Stephen Sodor Railway Modeler be on pegs in a store is still wonderful to see become reality!)
Gotta love how the first words are “consumers are willing to pay more”
greetings TB! love your content a lot, and just wanted to ask where can i submit fanart ive done/will do for you? keep up the great work, im a big fan✨🌸
Whenever a company says a product is "environmentally friendly", it's actually code for "extremely cheap to produce"
Thomas Wood is a complete failure of a range. Thank god it’s discontinued and replaced with the new improved Thomas Wooden Railway range with engines with accurate wheel configurations and much better tenders and details! The unpainted Wood engines are the absolute worse along with the tender engines with their blocky tenders and their sizes shrunk down. Not to mention the play sets for the Thomas Wood range is shit too. Thankfully I didn’t waste my money on this garbage and bought the new 2022 items instead.
Even going back to fix the problems they made with how they rushed Thomas Wood didn't make things much different. What do I mean by that? That's because they have only taken themselves two years to repaint most of the engines and rolling stock.
I first saw Thomas wood in a shop, and at first I thought it was some sort of bootleg Thomas.
EVEN THE DANG BOOTLEGS LOOK MORE REALISTIC THAN THOMAS WOOD
Thomas Wood legit looks like one of those toys they dig out from 90 years ago when people today would talk about how janky and simplistic looking they were and most the paint had faded and chipped off.
And I don't know where the fuck they're getting off on 'millenials are willing to pay more for sustainable products!'
People are willing to pay more if the QUALITY matches that or is better than the normal version. Most folks I know don't want to pay more for less no matter how 'environmentally friendly' you tell them it is. Normal shit cost enough but you're telling me they expected parents to pay more for crappy shit because it's 'green' and for their kids to accept it?
As a certain engine said "DISGRACEFUL!'
DISGUSTING
DESPICABLE!
Damn, you guys beat me to it. But, I agree. I love the environment and all, but just go back to the old ways. Or do metal, yeah sure it’s expensive and rusts, but it could make improved quality and feel more realistic and weighty.
I enjoyed the wooden railway, then wood came around and i was hiding in my room until the new and improved wooden railway came around
I’m not even a Thomas fan, I just came across this hunting for Steven Universe edits, but that sustainability message is hella yikes.
They’re basically admitting they’re aware that Millenials and Gen Z can be guilt tripped into trying to help the planet, so they’re going to exploit that for more money on subpar products. This is the kind of shit you see moustache-twirling Disney cartoon villains trying to do, except Mattel is being completely serious.
Half the time these massive multinational corporations use slave labor and illegally dump their trash and waste. Always be weary when they mention environmental sustainability.
Mattel: changes and ruins the franchise
Also mattel: I ruined your show pray I dont ruin it any further
I prefer the TOMY Thomas range myself
Here's my personal theory on why Mattel excuted that whole "being environmentally friendly and improve the product" thing poorly at first was to save money (in the short run), at first AND have people miss the old, better wooden railway, just to then execute the plan better and capitalize off people hating the old wood. Basically like that theory about Coca-Cola purposely having New Coke fail.
Putting Nesle on there is quite funny, if you know what the company actually does to the environment.
Thomas Wood is the most laziest Thomas Merch ever. It became my least favorite range as I got older. TWR was a childhood to me. I'm so glad Mattel brought it back.
Thomas wood sounds like an adult film name
The hobby store I go to the most actually stopped carrying Thomas merch altogether because of Thomas Woods god awful captive track redesign.
They were probably trying to up their ESG score, keep in mind this was around the same time they tried to diversify the cast of the show.
Guys I think there is a good reason why we should buy Thomas Wood as part donor engines for customs
FUCK YEAH
Mattel: thinks fans are stupid
Also Mattel: *literally creates the Thomas Creator Collective to bring the fans together*
MATTEL: “Am I out of touch? No, it’s the fans who are wrong.”
that guy and and that tree are honestly couple goals 😍😍😍

In which a grown man complains about preschool toys... and is completely justified in doing so.
adult fans of thomas, nerf and things like that are fascinating to me
like toys that are so specifically just a kid thing being enjoyed by adults, versus something enjoyed by all ages like lego or transformers/other rebooted 80s lines.
i don’t have a problem with it, i think it’s great you people are doing something you love, i just find it so interesting!
The issue with the logic that sustainable products being charged for more is that it usually applies to food; not toys.
As everybody says, Mattel thinks we're stupid enough to buy these stupid unpainted nightmares. Thomas Wood just sucked I'm happy Thomas Wooden Railway got a good reboot and it's 100000000000000000 times better then THOMAS FRICKING WOOD!
Gotta say this PowerPoint slide was goofy and doesn't really make sense with the product they put out considering they used plastic packaging I think its the use of less paint is what they would've touched upon later in the pitch presentation
Thomas Wood a perfect fit for unconscious parents. Kissing a tree is a mental disorder. Did the guy finally get help. (Kissing tree doesn’t equal environmentally conscious)
I remember I had a lot of wooden Thomas trains when I was a kid, and like like Thomas carrying a passenger those carried my childhood.
I am once again going down the rabbit hole of Thomas the Tank Engine CZcams.
Be careful bro-
It gets deep 😳
I still have my old learning curve Thomas toys. I may not play them anymore, but I'm keeping them, hopefully for my own kids to enjoy if I have them.
1:34: The reason why Henry appreciates his forest and other stories.🌳🌲⚘🌷🌼🌻🌺🌹🌱🐞🕊🐦🐇🦔🐿
When Thomas Wood came back as repaints I'm thinking, "Oh so noooow Mattel listens!", the people decided to stop being to lazy to add paint to every engine they could make and regreted thier decision and finally got what fans wanted...
I haven’t even thought about Thomas the tank engine in about 20 years. The CZcams algorithm man.
Literally every single model maker full length video maker movie maker and absolutely positively perfect replica maker:

James has seen some stuff.
You can't be proud of your red paint if there's barely any red paint there.
The day I saw those half painted wooden blocks, I knew my childhood had been killed.
Tf was having less paint supposed to even do for the environment and looking more sUsTaInAbLe for millennial families 😭
Even with the tenders on Thomas wood, they are just a block, but the older ones had a curve at each end, so therefore less wood is used on the older ones than the newer ones. And that little bit doesn’t seem like much, until you have like a thousand of them, there is then a lot more wood being saved.
Then there’s me. Me chilling with my Half Tomy-Half Trackmaster engines and a massive Take Along collection.
1:40 That picture tho! 😂
Man, Mattel is a real Diesel bro...
Running up and down this train the whole time.. 😔
a thomas the tank engine lore channel is already a really niche fucking topic but then to throw a fucking chicken wings of redemption clip at the end you got me im subbed i dont even particularly care for thomas anymore not really since i was a kid but damn i love this shit
Last time I ever saw a Thomas Wood product was in a Microwave.
Just watched the full thing, and the thomas on drugs thing had my laughting XD
I had no idea Thomas the tank engine sets had an active fanbase…
Enlightening! As a train boy myself, I was sorry to see that Thomas Wood line come out. It really was a joke, how terrible those models were. No detail at all, not appreciable to kids, or adults. At its root however, the change, naturally, had to do with train manufacturing cost cuts, which in the end trickle down to Mattel shareholders lining their pockets even more than they were with the original Thomas Wooden line. It’s obvious when you look at the train. What’s really sick, is that this notion of pure profit based on manufacturing cost cuts was all covered up with this premise of an environmental movement, as TrainBoy explains so well. This is where Mattel messed up though, assuming Thomas was Thomas, that people would want it no matter what, and that all the extra profit that could be sucked out of the franchise belonged to them. Mattel was of this persuasion, based on some study from the 1990’s showing that children back then preferred a toy train with a face. As we know, kids think too, and are interested in their trains because of actual reasons relating to play & character. What a bunch of fools Mattel were, still believing in 2015-2020 that they were the only ones that could make a wooden train that would sell. It’s a disgrace to the American tradition of toy trains, really. Sometimes, I think the products weren’t even tested in a play room. I’m glad to see the new and improved line though. Mattel’s prices on the newest models should be more reasonable, to make up for the insult to their previous loyal customers & children.
I swear Mattel does this with every brand they own.
the fact he didn’t say “you had track that clickity-clacked, a thomas that looked like… he’s on crack” kills me
Very well said!
It’s pretty much the same amount of wood as the old one, the only thing they cut back on is the paint costs. Then they sell it for more.
The whole intro
Remember how good wooden thomas was: yes
Tracks that went clickety clack: y e s
A thomas that… looked like he was on drugs: I WILL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK!
Mattel: "dont ask questions just consume product and then get excited for next product."
Ah yes show accurate toys. Regular Show had a lot to say about that.
So when we doing that wooden railway collab?👀
As for me I grew up with the Brio Thomas the Tank Engine Stuff and I really liked that more than any of the other Thomas Wodden Stuff as it was well detailed. I wish Brio kept the rights to produce stuff considering they struggled a few years after for some time.
the fact that they claim they're protecting trees yet cutting them down to make this is downright embarrassing.
As a 90's baby. I remember wood engines...
I’m a Gen z (unfortunately) and honestly I wouldn’t even be dumb enough to buy these pieces of economic ruins
Watch out for many zoomers Gman, they don’t tend to be the most stable people
It is so sad to see how bad kids have it now.
I was in the Take N' Play ecosystem and I bought a couple of Mattel's cheap replacements. They weighed nothing, the only advantage my new James has over my old one is the fact the paint has not been chipped by me playing with it.
The only reason that we would even buy Thomas wood is for the durability test or for custom engines
2:45-2:46 Percy's face is still visible for like a millisecond
TTTE Fans usually analyze everything, every quote, every heartfelt moment, we're anything but stupid lol
“We think that you’re stupid when we don’t even notice we’re stupid.” -Mattel
I think the only use for Thomas wood is either to put the face on a tomy or Bachman, make a video destroying them or make a custom cuz you won’t lose anything good
Mattel thinks fans are stupid
Also Mattel: All Engines Go
did you ever play with the die cast ones or the large ones with white wheels (i dont remember what either are called but i did have both as a kid)
So you know how Mattel took the influence of what a child said that caused bwba? I think I might have been the kid that caused them to stop making Thomas wood and made the new 2022 wooden railway
You are a real hero
I think that I am the only person in the universe who criticized their brand and they actually responded to me with the usual it’s environmental friendly! But they said they brought it up with their board of directors and then wooden railway 2022 kinda lines up with what I criticized
Finally,i won't die of hypothermia since my new Gordon lighter has advised
I HAD THE LITTLE WOODEN CRANE SET
Any product that is expressly and obnoxiously marketed as being "environmentally friendly" immediately makes me not want to buy it. When big corporations engage in greenwashing and social justice, it makes me gag. The insincerity and virtue-signaling is sickening.
Mr. Krabs saying "money" meme
I actually had a Thomas Brio toy, and even that was better quality!
Then what's their explanation for Trackmaster Revolution?
Ok now this is nice picking
Will there be a Part 2?
Not unless more pamphlets like this get leaked :/
Companies like Mattel will make these choices for Thomas but there other toy lines is still gonna be full of plastic and packaging waste. Simply because its not a wooden train
I’m also Thomas wooden railway has been made with sustainable wood since forever
Gee it’s almost like they made this to cut cost
They almost didn't put, "good, decent people buy our toys", suggesting that people who don't WON'T buy it. Almost kind of shaming you into accepting and buying their product.
The Wood line up looked like it was unfinished with painting.
What if Hasbro could be owned Thomas & Friends instead of Mattel. That will could've be better if they could handle the company-owned.
Wow this feels very familiar to that intolerable Lorax movie from 2012!
Sad
We need someone to buy it out
"Eh-either subscribe donate or gedafuqout" lmao still funny
