  • I managed to churn out 1 CBG lesson per month all year long. Here is the 12th lesson this year and I focus on how to sound good on 3-string fretless cigar box guitar (CBG) when you're still a beginner. I hope the video is helpful to someone.

    For a beginner, fretless, without even fretlines marked on, makes it hard to nail the notes spot on. A bit of vibrato masks the mistakes and allows you to home in on the true note before anyone notices. And BTW the third fret is not the "Blue Note". it's the minor third. The Blue Note is the #4th, ie the sixth fret. Just use it in passing to the notes either side, don't linger on it.

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for checking out the video. When playing blues in a minor key, indeed the flat5 is considered the blue note, but when playing in a major key, it's the flat3 (that dissonant note between the 2nd and 3rd). Just like the flat5 in minor blues, the flat3 should not be played as a riff but just in passing). Regardless of the theory behind the blues, I'm not complying to that and instead creating something even simpler - so please don't confuse this tutorial with a blues tutorial. I have another tutorial that covers the blues/rock shuffle if you're interested in that.

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Před 2 lety +1

      @@walterhaapapuro4796 Thank for giving it a go. I hope you like playing fretless. The idea of this formula is that you shouldn't have to follow a prescriptive strumming pattern to make it sound good. Any combination of strums, chugs, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th fret should work. However, if you want to try something similar to what I did at the beginning, try this... strum-chug-chug-strum-strum-chug (then throw in your 2nd and 3rd fret for fill)... strum-chug-chug-strum-strum-chug (then fill)... repeat.

    Can u tune n play a Ukulele like a cigar box guitar?

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Před rokem

      That's a difficult question to answer because there's no definitive cigar box guitar tuning. I have several different CBGs (both 3 and 4 string) and tune them all differently. Theoretically, you can tune any string instrument any way you'd like (provided the strings/neck can support that tension of course). This tutorial is for a 3-string (I-V-I) tuning so I would imagine you could tune a uke like that provided you removed one of the strings. Ironically, I have a different video about tuning a 4-string CBG to ukulele-style tuning.

    What kind of strings do you have on this slide and the gauges?

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Před rokem

      They are from a phosphor bronze acoustic guitar set (I can't remember which brand). The gauges are .044, .032, & .022. I can't quite recall if it was the E, A, and D or the A, D, and G, but I know it was 3 consecutive strings within the pack. I'm pretty sure it was the A, D, and G but don't quote me on that. Thanks for watching.

    • @musicalmiscellany
      @musicalmiscellany  Před rokem +1

      Technically it doesn't need to be fretless it needs to be played with a slide. Generally a new player is going to have a lot more success playing slide on a fretless instrument (one setup for slide playing) than a fretted instrument (one setup for fretting). Thanks for checking out the vid.
