On my boat, it has a brass tube securing the thermostat in the housing. It should freely slip in and out of the housing instead of forcing it in with the cover. If it doesn’t, you need to continue cleaning the rust out with a wire brush until it does. If not, you’ll have to remove the entire housing again to get thermostat out instead of just removing the cover.

I have videos on how to test coils. Switchboxes should be putting out around 200-250 volts to the coil. You will need RM to test the alternating currents if my memory serves me correctly.

I am hoping maybe you could help. I am working on a 60hp 3 cylinder Merc maybe from mid to late 80's or so. I did the fuel lines and cleaned the carbs changed the plugs. Rebuilt the fuel pump, new starter, new coilpack and it starts and runs only when I spray premix in the carbs. The needle/seats are good the jets are clean. The starter will not stay engaged it only turns for a couple seconds then drops. The fuel screws are set about 1 3/4 turns out.

Does the engine fire? That kicks down the starter gear. Son

@@MerCSonL6 no, it just kicks up then down. He thought the starter was bad. He put a new one on. The starter has a 10 tooth gear on it. Good wiring, new solenoid new battery. New rectifier. This is my bosses boat he threw a pile of money at it. Compression is very good. Chokes and linkages are good. New lines/connectors to tank good fuel flow to carbs, new fuel filter. The ball gets hard. Needle/seat are sealing. It runs if I spray premix in the carbs but it doesn't idle perfect. This one has me scratching my head. Spark is hot. I was thinking maybe order new jets but they were clean. I soaked the carbs and went through them.

What about that gold colored gasket as this guy shows here. Not very good explaination of the gaskets and rubber o ring that come in the package with the thermostat kit
