Great video!! The education system is general is super flawed (especially here in the US!) but I always think about this anecdote someone once said to me. They said “your education can never be taken away from you,” and it’s so true! No matter what happens in your life, your education will always remain.

Remember this when you find yourself working for the US postal service, while classmates that you always knew were less intelligent than you go on to thrive as real estate agents or sales executives. It's exactly the same here in the UK.
I'm not trying to have a dig, but if you're serious, you can educate yourself. Libraries are always free. If you go to university you should have a career plan in mind before you go, because you need to understand exactly how your degree subject is going to help you to attain that goal, and also, you're gonna need to repay all of that debt.
A degree is not about education. It is about readying yourself to get a starting position in a lucrative career. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Education is something different. It costs nothing and you can do it for yourself.
My years at uni (back in the dark ages - 1970s) were the Time of my Life! Aside from the biology I was studying, I learned *so much* about life and people and living at close quarters and solving problems on my own. I met people from all walks of life, even from other remote countries where life was vastly different from mine. Most importantly, I *failed* for the first time in my life and had to learn to cope with it. Very important lesson, that! I lived at a campus uni and I can tell you I am a living repository of every sneaky, underhanded and brilliant way of playing tricks on unsuspecting people. We filled up one bloke's room from floor to ceiling with styrofoam beads (courtesy of the pharmacist in town, who stupidly left them out beside his garbage bins). Another bloke had the entire contents of his room moved a mile down the road and set up in the playing fields. Sadly, it rained... A 'friend' of mine took the time and trouble to secrete two dozen mousetraps (loaded) about my room, most notably in my underwear drawer, where they *bit* my fingers! But most of all, I learned enough to graduate as a zoologist/botanist and *that* has been my life for all these mumbledymumble years! Don't discount education simply because of the way it's delivered. Just learn wherever you can. :)

Hi, I'm from Spain and I can really assure everyone that our education system is an absolute rubbish. We only memorize things, write them down in the exams and then forget them completely... I hope this changes soon!

What you've said about student loans and debt makes me extremely happy that I studied in Poland!! I have finished 2 The best universities in Poland (+1 semestr in Portugal) and I didn't have to pay a single PLN for this.

Hey! I just really admire your self-confidence! You clearly know what you want and it doesn’t look super ambitious at all. Just you and your vision. Any ideas how to stay focused? We need to know your secrets 😂 focus is something I struggle with in the short term, but long term I tend to study people I admire and see their journeys. When I was starting out I looked deeply at a lot of youtubers I admired. It’s not about copying, it’s about inspiration :)

I do believe in self-education also . I mean, we all go to school. But most of the people end it there. Due to my life experiences, I realised it is so important to prepare yourself and continue learning. The basic is there. But in order to achieve something, each day should be a learning one. And believe me, I know much history, geography, nutrition, sport or languages ( I speak more or less 6), etc and all of this because I never stop improving.
Lucy, I've been watching your videos for more than 2 years now and I love them! You've helped me a lot ❤

So the Spanish education system is very similar to the Italian one. It's something that I really hate, just theory and no practice. Also, why do we have to study for 5 years or more? It's not like that in other countries. At the end, Italian students finish their academic career when they are about 26-28 years old without any pratical experience.
I'm from Poland and we have the same situation as you guys in Italy or Spain. I think this is how education system looks like in mostly of european countries

I really like your english method (videos) and not only because you teach and present it very well but also is you. Your personality and style is a huge plus of your teaching technique. This is coming from a person that already knows english. I dont watch your videos to learn for the first time still your content makes me curious. You make it feel so casual and fun. Hi Lucy, I worked right out of high school. I worked in the repair trade and did so well, I worked through long apprenticeships in about a tenth of the time. Decided to go back to college to study Veterinary Medicine. Was admitted to the five finest agriculture college but decided to go to Cornell University which is like Harvard or Oxford for farm related work. The best time of my life. Surrounded like people the same, I flourished even unprepared for the highest and hardest academics in the world in my “meat science” degree. Yea, meat science. Of 18,000 undergrads, there were 8 meat science majors. I double majored I’m International Agriculture and traveled to do research in Central America. Loved it. Met my future wife at Cornell we shared a flat with two other at students, then she went on to vet college and I did masters work in meat safety at Kansas State (#1 in meat industry here in the U.S.). Then went to medical school and clock college. Huge change of plans. Finished med school and clock school and my girlfriend (now wife of 30 years) went into practice and hated every minute. Went into clock trade and also federal work as a professional photographer (yes I know, polymath)…. anyway, quit medicine after 20 years and photo work after a serious injury and went back to clock work. Now finishing a four year virtual master/student clock continuation with my own clock repair business that is now world class. I fix clocks at a master level from all over the world.
All that to say would I go to a uni that costs $25,000/semester? Yes! Ivy League school reinforced my love of learning and even *still* repaying the loan, I’d do it again. Grad school? Nope, waste of time (but I was a teaching assistant and got paid to go to school). Now almost retirement age, I will finish up with five degrees and a master level clock business. No regrets. Life is good and I still have my hands that can make shovels worth of cash. We are of the same ilk I thing. Your emphasis was on a different subject, but both of us sound like people driven to attain what we want, good,
bad, or ugly. Your whole personality resonates with my own even being your fathers age to you. Your channels and marketing skills are obvious and I adore your work. As an English diaspora, I can innately meld with your content. The UK makes it almost impossible for Americans to emigrate to the UK, but my heart lies there and Ireland. I’d move in a heartbeat.

I just can´t believe how amazing your Spanish is!!!!!! Honestly, everytime you say a sentence, I think it´s perfect! I watch all your videos because I would love to have the same pronunciation that you have in Spanish but in English and I quite like it your accent! Thank you for your honesty in sharing the university experience with us. The schooling system these days tends to really push the idea of a higher education being the be all if you want to succeed in life. After my wife passed away my 15 year old son said that he wanted to be a carpenter when he left school. Here in Australia he was able to undertake a school based apprenticeship in his fourth year of high school which was discouraged by many coordinators at the high school he was appending at the time. They suggested that he needed to complete all 6 years of high school first. Long story short, he followed his passion in year 10 (4th year of High School) at a different school and has become a very successful carpenter. Some of those he knew that have gone to university are still chasing employment and not all are even sure of the direction they want to head with their career. Universities do have their place but I'm not sure that they are as important as they once were.
The uni of Westminster has changed a lot since then apparently. They do now a lot of events to get students socialise. Probably, it depends on the course as well. Mine was extremely well structured (English) and I personally think that by doing university you grow a lot as a person. Ok it’s 3 years and very expensive but the knowledge and the experience you get out of it are invaluable.
I also have exp studying in other unis (Central Europe) and I think that the U.K. system is a LOT better. There’s no point in memorising a large chunk of text as you said.. it doesn’t give you anything (that’s what they do in other unis)

OMG Lucy!! I completely agree with you with the educative system in Spain. I'm 30 and I started "Filología Inglesa" back then and everything was exam based, I had to study Latin, history of Europe, and other subjects non related to my degree (too many units). I didn't finish my degree, I just gave up. This last September I started my degree on Applied Languages here in the UK, and what a difference! However like you said, my social life isn't the same, I guess I'm quite old for partying with 18 years old people lol.
This year has been tough, I try to upload more videos but managing time between work, uni and CZcams is tough hahaha, and soon hopefully I'll do the CELTA course, which will be very handy when I go to my placement year in China hahaha. So I'm just taking it easy really.

Hey Lucy, I really admire your candour and unique insights on your uni experience and the idea that it's okay if your child chooses not to go to the uni. I came to London last year for my master degree and have just completed it. To be honest, I find myself relate to some of your experience, especially the part of struggling to enrich social life. In terms of knowledge, it seems to me that what uni bring to us is more than the knowledge itself since we could obviously teach ourselves in our own time and let alone the knowledge evolves over time. What I have achieved most is the process of adapting to a brand new life, integrating into a new culture and enviroment, strategically collect information and critically engaging with the info, which have become the transferable skills that would foster my career and life in the years ahead. However, the student fee is still a bit high compared with the experience and what I have learnt.
You are comply right about the fact that a campus university has a better social interaction. My best years are the ones when I did my bachellors degree and spent most of my day if not the whole day on campus

Much cheaper then, but amoungst your insightful points, I loved your statement that these days there is a course for everything when in fact everything does not need a course... Yes indeed... Education is not so much about learning today as it is about business, & you (dear reader) are their business. Lucy, your get up & go got up & did what uni wasn't going to do for you! All the best!

A fascinating video. I've been following your "English with Lucy" channel for some time but have only just discovered your other channel.
I'm quite a bit older than you so my experience of university was very different from yours, though there were certain similarities. Like you, I had a gift for languages and studied English, French and German for "A" level and went on to study a language degree in London. In our first year we studied 3 languages so I took up Spanish from scratch and enjoyed it so much that I ended up dropping my German at the end of the first year and continuing with French and Spanish. In those days, if you studied a degree you automatically got a grant from your Local Education Authority (Clwyd, North Wales, in my case) and as both my parents were teachers (and therefore not high earners), I got the maximum grant. However, living in London was expensive (my rent alone swallowed up half of my grant) and I always worked in my holidays to stay afloat. I spent my third year abroad (6 months in France and 6 months in Mexico) and finished with a 2:1. After leaving university I wanted to work in foreign trade but UK companies were not interested in language graduates (English spoken slowly and loudly is understood by everyone) and after working in sales administration for Beechams and in accounts for Cheeseborough Ponds, neither of which made much use of my languages, I joined the Departament of Trade and Industry in 1979 where I spent 10 years, mostly working on overseas trade policy and promotion. 1982 was the year that changed my life as I spent 6 months attached to the Comercial Department of the British Embassy in Madrid. It was a great time to be in Madrid (the FIFA World Cup, "La Movida", and the general relaxing after so many years of repression) and I enjoyed myself so much that I vowed to return for a longer stay. That opportunity came up in 1989 when I moved out to Seville to open up a Commercial Section within the British Consulate on the back of Expo 92. I only expected to stay for the duration of the Expo but everything went so well that the Ambassador in Madrid asked me to stay on and I never went back. In addition to commercial work I took on consular work in 2006 and eventually gave up commercial work in 2013 (the FCO had to make some savings) though I still do the consular work.
My kids are at university now so your more recent experience is probably more relevant to them. After two years studying Fine Art at the University of Seville, my daughter decided she wanted to specialise in photography and as there are no universities in Spain that offer a degree in photography, she's in her second year of a B A (Hons) in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. She's currently in lockdown at the moment and studying online, not ideal as she's missing out on many aspects of student life. My son has just started a degree in Archeology at the University of Seville and is also studying online. We live in difficult times.

I've done lots of exciting things in my life such as deep sea diving and flying hot air balloons and I still ride a motorbike on a regular basis. I've really enjoyed your stories about farm life. I had a school friend whose father was a farmer and I spent a couple of days working on the farm at the end of a summer term so I know how much hard work is involved. I also took part in the grape harvest in Bordeaux for three successive years after I'd spent my year abroad at university and that was hard work too though the opportunity to drink some vintage St Emilion made it all worthwhile! Expo 92 was indeed an incredible experience and I have many stories to tell about it. Stay safe and well.

I study business administrations and economics with technical and language aspects... University can teach you quite a lot, even with these subjects. It‘s the time to grow and learn, in Universities in Germany you ought to learn interdisciplinarily so you don‘t end up as a „Fachidiot“... feel I have to justify studying, also if it‘s not science in a lab or smth

In Brazil we have public - and private universities. The public ones are not like the community colleges from U.S. Here... if you get into a public one.. is just amazing. 'Cause some of them are AMAZING. I've never paid for it. I went to a public one.

Hey Lucy, I've been following your channel for quite some time. English is not my native language but I use it a lot for work (could I say I work in English ;)) and I love watching your videos because of your bright personality and for the useful tips you give. I don't normally post comments but I just couldn't hold myself back when I learned you have a degree in Marketing - so do I ! I absolutely relate to your experience study and life-wise. I was so excited when I chose Marketing as that's what I wanted to do- research new markets, advertise, use some physiological techniques (colour palettes, shapes, smells, sounds etc. ) to make a product attractive etc. To my disappointment until I got the to the essential part of the study (in year 3 of 4) I had already forgotten what brought me in- I lost my passion about the study somewhere in the swirl of useless mandatory, boring disciplines. Anyway, I tried going for a Master degree in psychology so I could still combine it with Marketing (and just hypnotise people buy whatever I'm trying to sell ... (joking)) but in the second semester I met a guy (my husband now) and going out with him was way too interesting, I didn't have enough time to study so I gave up.
To date I still haven't used my Marketing skills professionally because I also soon realised most small/missle businesses can't afford paying for a good advertisement or it's not their top priority while the big fish were in bigger cities where I wasn't keen on moving to.
Anyway...thank you for sharing your experience and good luck!

She speaks very fluently in Spanish with an Andalusian accent and is just like a completely other person. She seems so prim and proper when she is speaking in English, and she is funny too. However, when she speak Spanish the amount of sass she has its a whole new level... Is literally like two different people.

Student loans make me feel absolutely terrified by the way!
Here in Russia we have a chance to study for free if we get REALLY high exam grades (about 80-100%). I nearly lost my will to live :DD but I managed to be one of those 8 future translators/interpreters that studied for free at the uni I chose. Otherwise, I don't think I would have got a degree at all, because the interest rate on loans is ridiculous here.
And as for the uni itself...it was a bit like the spanish one you're talking about (remembering loads of information for multiple choice tests on law, bookkeeping and history of religions...) but all the translation as well as English and French courses I had were fantastic! Some students even had a semester in Bath, Maynooth, somewhere in Italy, Spain, France and even China, so it was pretty decent.
I totally agree that not all things need a course. And that's excactly what my husband and I are planning to talk about with our future children - sometimes a uni is just a waste of time
Muy de acuerdo con tu opinión Lucy El sistema universitario español es demasiado teórico hasta un nivel que raya la estupidez. Creo que todo viene de haber imitado mal el modelo francés. Además el sistema de enseñanza sigue siendo (en el sistema público) dependiente de saber de memoria un montón de temas y supuestos prácticos para vomitarlos el día del examen dejándote bastantes sequelas psicológicas. I attended Portland State University for an undergrad degree in business and an MBA. Had the exact same experience with group projects. It sucked. It was a commuter university to no social life as well.

In India , to do medicine you must have Physics, Chemistry and Biology... And then clear a draconian entrance test where there are some 80,000 seats and 1.6 million aspirants...

For me it wasn’t such a positive experience either. Not fun at all! I did learned quite a lot in that period, though, and eventually got the job I’m currently in (great income), but that was mostly because of an internship program I got into. To summarize it all, you have to spend (or should I say waste? Haha) some years to get a title (a diploma) in order to be allowed to do what you really want to do. And then you start to learn. I went to Law school. Most of my colleagues are working in total different areas. We went out of the university knowing basically nothing. Some of us remain knowing nothing. But we did get the title, yes, sir! I just think, and that thinking keeps getting stronger, that we have some serious change in the education system to do. Serious.
Hi,Lucy. I am from Belarus. Its country between Russia and Poland. And in our country high education is terrible. At lectures, we simply wrote down what was dictated to us, and at seminars we retold. There was almost no practice. Studying was not interesting at all.

To complain that you live in London and you have to travel I think is not the smartest thing. This is the main feature of London, the tube, the night buses, the well organised transport system..everyone is doing it.

Hi Lucy, your experience in Uni was very similar to my son's here in Torino, Italy. My son's lived at home seeing that they were attending the Politechnic here in Torino, but some of their friends from other cities in Italy or other countries didn't live on Campus, they just rented a flat near Uni. Campus's do not exist here except for a couple, one is The Campus Einaudi here in aTorino and the other one I know of is in Milan, if there are others around Italy I don't know.

Memorize, memorize and memorize, that's the only thing we do spanish students. Then we are exposed to the laboral world completely unexperienced and not knowing how to work in group, be competitive and squeeze our skills

Being from America we went basically in the armed forces after high school. Then after high scool, and our discharge from the service, they paid also for our college education, which was great, and they also paid us for going there! However this was only junior college. So I understand what you say about everybody passing, because, the professor would say, hey let so and so sit next to you and copy on your exam alright! "So they passed too, right great?"

I'm from Poland and I would like to study abroad. I'd love to study at Oxford or Cambridge university. I'm a little bit scared about other system of education and all that stuff. Were you scared about it a lot?
Studying abroad is an amazing experience. Oxford and Cambridge are great unis if you like studying intensively. I was nervous but not scared to study in Spain. I was soooo eager to go that I didn't care what happened!

OMG I so agree with you about how it’s kinda pointless to study so many things for an exam! I’m italian and I study Law at Pisa University (where the leaning tower is) and we have so many oral exams to do (32 in 5 years) that are so difficult and long (from 500 to 1000 pages PER exam. It’s a nightmare)! And my classmates and I think it should be more practical, because after all this hard studying we can’t do NOTHING like writing legal documents etc... so frustrating
That is law but if you tried studying pharmacy or medecine you would know the actual meaning of nightmare
Khaled Ramadan I actually believe that all these three courses are extremely difficult in their own way. Believe me if I say law is quite difficult to achieve as well. It’s not only about learning things as many like you think, criticizing it’s only a mnemotic study. It’s much more than that and it is truly exasperating sometimes. Everything we have is theory and it’s not easy because it’s tiring to understand everything and connect each argument to another (maybe studied years before because, YES, we also have to do that)... not to mention that the oral exams are kinda terrifying because our professors are tough as hell. We’d love to have time to practice as well like those studying at medicin or nursing university, for example, to take a break.
@@Sakurearine yeah law is quite too hard i can see many student go mad cuz they study law they say it's complicated to a great extent you are. Objected to memorize every thing which is so hard and as you said it's full of a lot of theories and practicing just like pharmacy medecine and nursery i study pharmacy and I am complaining about the subjects also university is too hard isn't it ? Lol

I also hold a BA degree in Marking, and now I regret to take it. The classes were very boring, pointless and more importantly, you find this degree could not help you at all in your work. We cheat in our exam too. haha...
