  • This video contains spoilers for The Name of the Wind, The Wise Man's Fear and The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss.
One of the more unique places of Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller world is the Underthing. A vast subterranean network of intersecting tunnels and spaces beneath the University. Let's explore the literature regarding this place together as I try to unravel its mysteries.

I believe Auri is actually fully sane, She is just gifted with knowing the deep truth of everything around her. I think she is one of the original namers from the legends. So what seems kind of crazy to us, Is actually just the trie experience of someone who can read the names of everything around her...

I don't think fully sane is the right word. there is something beyond sanity and insanity in the story. remember that Lanrae according to Skarpis story was expressively grasped by something worse than madness (which is backed by the adem story which calls him sane) and we had that scene where Kvothe and Auri meet Elodin in the underthing and Kvothe described Elodin expressedly as sane no matter how many times before he described him as insane and remember how Kvothe after his first calling of the wind was in a delirium like mindspace. I think that naming does something to the mind, the more powerful a namer, the more powerful the effect. So Auri is neither sane nor insane it is just that jher "sleeping mind" is incredibly active due to her being a namer.

One of the drawbacks of an author waiting over 10 years to continue his story is that pretty much every possible stone has been turned over, all possible theories visited, so by the time he actually (if ever) publishes the 3rd book it'll very likely not catch anyone off guard.

Ah, the home of my favorite character of the series. I didn't really think much of the place when I read the main books, but I took a keen interest in it when we got the Auri sentric short story, especially when a specific thing happened that made me sit on the edge of my chair. I will not spoil it here for anyone that have not read said book. And I knew it could not end that way because of certain things but still... I am fairly sure the Underthings will be back in the next book. And Auri with it.
A character I STILL feel like is more fleshed out and likeable that Kvothe's so called love interest what's-her-face. Even with Denna technically having more screen time... Alright, I am probably repeating myself, I have posted enough about her before. Suffice it to say I still can't get myself to really like her. Auri is a much better match for Kvothe than Denna. I fear for her fate though since the story is told to Cronicler, and while there appears to be a reference to Denna is mentioned in the now, Auri is never mentioned. I hold a silent hope that as I remmeber that person is not mentioned by name it might be Auri but I dunno... Bring her BACK dammit! :-)

Elodin drew a deep breath. *_"Once upon a time, there was a University. It was built in the dead ruins of an older University._* It wasn't very big, perhaps fifty people in all. But it was the best University for miles and miles, so people came and learned and left. There was a small group of people who gathered there. People whose knowledge went beyond mathematics and grammar and rhetoric.
They started a smaller group inside the University. They called it the Arcanum and it was a very small, very secret thing. They had a ranking system among themselves, and your rise through those ranks was due to prowess and nothing else. One entered this group by proving they could see things for what they really were. They became E'lir, which means see-er. How do you think they became Re'lar?" He looked at me expectantly.

I want to present the theory that perhaps no one can navigate the underthing due to a magical property. Maybe student do wander in, but never come out. I know we never hear of anything like that but maybe some of them are said to go to Haven by the professors? The reason Kvothe can go through is because he has Auri as a guide. Maybe there are guardians down there or something that wipe students minds. Maybe Auri is the guardian. I think the 3rd book will be integral in putting the pieces together on this particular question. Great thinking though!

The wait will be different for different people. For me, its only been a little over 2 years since I first started reading these books, so I can be patient. But for people who have waited 10 or more years to see how Kvothe's story ends, I can understand how you'd feel. Ironically, Rothfuss sums it up best himself: "When you wait a few span or month to hear a finished song, the anticipation adds savor. But after a year, excitement begins to sour."
However, to his credit, I do think he's writing something where each word is meticulously chosen and that kind of quality takes time. As others have said, I'd rather wait and get a book with excellent prose then something that doesn't live up to standard. My opinion on this might change if the book is still not out after another 10 years though! XD
